We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
I would love for him to be holding something behind his back; like a bunch of flowers or a ray gun, maybe even one disguised as the other. We'll never know for sure what's behind there.
amazing find.
That is a really cool find. What a shame somebody lost it. I do wonder what's behind his back.
Wonderful find!! My first thought was maybe they were going to shop in the mall where they restore photos..like "things remembered"...such a gem!
I think it's his subtle little roguish smile that makes you wonder what he's hiding behind his back. Very sweet.
smond says to Molly, "Girl, I like your face," and Molly says this as she take him by the ha
Ha! Why *wouldn't* you take this to a movie theater? I mean, c'mon.
Is the cloth of that suit corduroy? Looks like broad-wale corduroy, they did wear it in suits back in the day.
Is anyone else as repulsed as I am by the AA "Scrunchies" girl? Considering that a scrunchy is a hair tie, I don't see why she needs to wallow on them with her near-nekkid self and that pouty sex-kitten expression. Nothing sensual about a scrunchy!
"The sash...one piece, countless ways to wear it." Translated from the vulgate, "You paid over the odds for a random, useless, wide piece of fabric that no one in their right mind would buy."
Sorry gang, I'm going on about 3 hours sleep today and it is *not* enough. My milk of human kindness has turned to cheese in my veins. I wish a dapper young man would bring me a surprise present today.
@Baby Basil ... sure, but I'm thinking that the 'Dapper Young Man' in this find would like both the Scrunchies girl and the Sash girls, heck, he'd get excited about ALL the American Apparel girls.
Around the turn of the 20th century, having a studio portrait done was a BIG deal. Many times, people didn't have suits or fine dresses, so the photographers had a wardrobe on hand you could select an ensemble from. If you look closely, you can see that the suit jacket is much too wide at the shoulders, and doesn't quite fit right elsewhere. Given the age of the subject, I'd almost bet this picture was made to commemorate a high school graduation (a rarity back then!) or a marriage. When I look at the youth in his face, I can't help but wonder about all the the paths ahead that his life led him down.
It wasn't fashionable to smile in pictures back then, especially for a man. The look on his face says he really wanted to. You can see the grin in his heart.
Not to be a downer 'cause he is a cutie, but there may be something wrong with that right hand of his. A great-great-uncle appears in all our family pictures in profile because the right side of his face was disfigured in a fireworks incident. Yes - there were rednecks in the late 1800's too.
I really like the background on this photo. A gate and a building fading away? Do you think it is a painted background for the studio?
It's quite possible that his right hand is holding the posing stand. Early photographs often required really long exposures, and photographers had things to help people stay still so they wouldn't come out blurry. Besides, you have to do SOMETHING with your hands in a 3/4 length picture.
And yes, that's a canvas backdrop with architecture painted on it, and probably a studio-provided suit.
Finally! A picture of Jack the Ripper. I know what he's got behind his back...
I wish my company's internet police wouldn't block the American Apparel ads since you guys talk so much about them.
Great description of the Find, Michele in Monmouth.
I love old pictures like this. I have several of them hanging up in my house, of various family members from long ago. It's a shame someone lost this.
Geek, you're not missing much. Well, at least from my perspective. YOU might find them enjoyable from your male perspective. (especially the nipple suspender gal!)
p.s.--Berets? Really? Are THESE now going to make a huge comeback? Yuck.
@babybasil
My recommendation is that you get Mozilla Firefox, then download Adblock plus. It is all free, and my life has been blissfully devoid of American Apparel ads for 4 months.
"How many fingers am I holding up? Come on guess."
It wasn't "unfashionable" to smile in old photos, but the fact that it's hard or impossible to hold a smile for 30-60 seconds without blurring the lower half of your face. Easier just to stay serious. And at least the hand-grip stand is better than the old Daguerrotype head-clamp. (Which explains the rather startled expression of young children in old photos of that type.)
In "Eva Luna" Isabel Allende describes the main character buying old photos like this to create the family she never had. I might do that, some day...Wombles don't have relatives. We just are.
I'll bet he is holding a giant dildo behind his back.
"How many dildoes am I holding?
Come on guess."
How startling! He looks just like a guy I had/have a massive crush on. Very much like him...
8 students in my house: love the adblock!
My guess with the hand? Has a wedgie..the pic was shot before he had a chance to get his hand out...
William didn't really like the backdrop and holding the posing stand and paying all the money, but he was madly in love with the girl at the portrait studio, so he went there anyway. The day this picture was taken, he met the girl he would later marry. Their great-great-grandson, incidentally, was Brain Problem's heartthrob.
Pictures are always my favorite kinds of "Finds". I love to just stare and imagine their lives...from beginning to end. Well, I only stare for about a minute, but still.....
It looks like Popcorn Pete. He had this photo taken at the Olde Tyme Photo booth at the Puyallup Fair.
I'd like to see the one Davy had taken. (I'll bet he went Gangster.)
Sweet! He looks like he would rather be someplace else...
That is sad.
I took Great Granpa
out to see a movie.
Didn't have to pay to
get him in...
He DOES look really familiar...
He's going in my Adopted Ancestors album.
Oh hes so dapper, is it wrong I have a crush on him....?
he reminds me of ryan gosling.
that being said, it would be interesting to find out the time period.
Not wrong at all, Darkshines. I have a wicked crush on Man on Bike myself.. (and that sousaphone guy was kinda cute, too.)
Seems to me that the picture resembles an actor in a recent movie I saw. Can't remember the name. Perhaps, someone brought the picture to compare to the actor in the picture. Lost family member? Secret love affair?
