hmmmmm....my baby could use an undersanding.
A few thoughts ran through my head as I read this. First, I am amazed that a 13 year old can't spell able and healthy. Second, how strict are his parents, if he isn't allowed to babysit after 7 PM, even on the weekends? Third, what bearing does the caller ID have on anything? Fourth, how exactly does walking to the house keep the kids healthy? I suppose it is Arizona, so it's not like they are likely to catch cold most of the year. I am baffled by Martin.
I would never trust anyone who couldnt spell with my child.
Also, his handwriting literally looks like that of a first grader.
I'm more concerned about him undersanding the kids, what good is an undersanded kid? They'll just give you slivers. And that can't be helthy.
Misspellings: survice, abel, dipers, undersanding, helthy... a 13 year old would not be this bad of a speller. It also looks as if it was written in crayon.
The caller id is to discourage prank callers, and the "staying healthy" part is a justification for walking home, a 13-year old can't pick anyone up in a car.
I think its amazing that a 13 year old kid is looking to make money by babysitting. I don't hear too much about male babysitters either.
So he can't spell. My little brother is 19 years old and he still asks me for help with his spelling. Perhaps he, like my brother, has a learning disorder.
It sounds like the kid has a big heart and a good work ethic. Both of which are far more important than spelling correctly.
I thought this was cute and I agree with Katie about having a big heart and good work ethics being more important than knowing how to spell. Spelling is not a strong point for most men....it's the whole right brain vs. the left brain thing. I know many males from the ages of 19 to 50 who can't spell. No big deal.
Martin may not have the best spelling skills in the world, but at least he seems to understand how to make a living in this world. Unlike some kids whose parents who just fork over $100 a week to their kids, and they never learn how to earn an honest living. I can see Martin selling cars or furniture in his future. But a few tips for the salesman: Maybe put your address on your ad. What, we're suposed to guess where you lives. Also, you should post your hourly rates, otherwise it makes people think you can't afford what you're advertising.
Haha, judging by the handwriting, no way is Martin really 13. He's really only about 10, but he wants to make some money on the sly, so he put up these fliers, knowing full well that no one would probably trust a 10 year old babysitter. I wonder if anyone ever used his service!
Caller ID?! that made me laugh, kids are so funny. The fact that at 13 he did not know how to spell healthy concerns me.
My husband teaches 7th and 8th graders. Martin's spelling is NOT that bad as compared to some I've seen. I've helped him correct papers and it blows my mind how bad a lot of kids spelling is. I'm old school and tend to see misspellings and my reading screeches to a halt, whereas my husband doesn't even notice so much anymore. They just don't flunk kids for being terrible spellers.
I agree with the "at least he's motivated" thing. Not that I'd let a 13 yr old boy I didn't already know babysit my kids, but Martin seems to be enterprising enough.
Accomplished adults are crappy spellers, too. I work on training manuals all day, and there are amazing typos from franchise professionals. The hand-written notes are even worse (no spell check): I wonder if it has anything to do with the corporate culture of coffee, meth and anxiety.
This looks like something my brother would write- he's twelve but his handwriting and spelling really are that bad. And he babysits.
Martin has taken initiatve and organized his offer to work as best he can. Bravo! I would call this kid and ask him to do chores or errands, pay him, and provide motivation for him to continue striving to achieve through working. Being able to spell is so not the point.
My little brother...was slow. He couldn't write but he had a hell of a sells pitch. I miss him :( Anyway this reminds me...my boyfriend tells me about a log people keep at his work. Security wrote "The man is making treats at the other man at the bar" ...THREATS lol I couldn't believe it....working SECURITY guard...wrote TREATS...hahahahahaha if grown working men can do it....so can little 13 year old kids
We should really look deeper into this flyer. On the surface it is an ad for a babysitting service. In reality it is Martin's way of shaking down the neighborhood for "protection" payments. Obviously Martin likes to ride the bus home from school by himself. To stay "helthy", your child will need to walk home from now on. He has caller ID so he will know if you call to complain.
So spelling is his weakest link. Who cares? He won't have to worry about that once he's become a multi-millionaire. I bet ya Donald Trump can't spell very well either. And the man even owns air/space, who knew!
perhaps this kid should do less babysitting and more schooling. he's 13 and can't spell worth a damn.
What amuses me is that he "ruled" the paper, supposedly to have straight lines to write on, only the lines he drew weren't straight. That must be why he stopped ruling halfway down.
my son started babysiting when he was 13. fortunately we had a computer for him to use..in fact, now he's in college, studying to be a pediatric physical therapist, and he works as a 'nanny'. fortunately, he's been able to fight the winning battle with his dyslexia....and none of the kids he's been a big brother to ever cared that he can't spell very gud. they like the fact that he's there, when their parents aren't.
go martin :)
""babysiting"" see ... that one wasn't even on purpose.
i wanted to add, about the 'helthy' part....my son is a cross country runner and a racquet ball player.... his wards have 'exercise hour' every day to stay 'helthy'.
As a parent, this freaks the crap out of me. Who in their right mind would let little Martin watch their child?
I think that everything about this ad is awesome!!! But you couldn't let Martin babysit for you any way... no phone #.
I'm assuming Martin will be accompanying his ward during the walk home from school.
Perhaps the call ID is to do a reverse search, thereby allowing Martin to stand outside the house a la John Cusack from Say Anything?
This ad is cute and strange at the same time. Has Martin even told his parents that he is venturing into this ?You would think one of his parents would have created a flyer for him.If not, why didn't he consult an adult before announcing his service ? Or...is this a draft of an ad and not the actual ad ? He has left us with questions and yes, a smile.
Although I probably wouldn't let Martin babysit my dtr unless I knew his family pretty well, I am impressed by his motivation and work ethic. Everybody that said he is doing better than the kids these days that get lots of money just handed to them are right. I started babysitting in my little home town when I was 11. Of course it was a much more simple time back then. But the point is I could barely spell then and I still really can't and I have an advanced degree. It is cute how he lets us all know his family has caller ID and he can change "dipers".
maybe he has the caller ID so he can tell if the calls are coming from inside the house....OMG!!!!get out of the house.
I hate to admit it, but this is better written, and in better handwriting than my 19 year old son could pull off. Spelling is NOT his strong suite, though he is a very intelligent boy. I like Martin. I feel a bit creeped out by his offer, but I agree with most others, he deserves to get SOME kind of work, though I think he should stay away from undersanding any children for a little while yet, anyway! :)
