I Know My Calculus

I work at the Indiana University library, and this is one of many treasures I've found in the stacks. I think some graduate students who work in the carrels upstairs had a bit of a nerdy love connection going on. This piece of paper was folded in half over a lengthy calculus problem; but, there's so much more than math! I hope they found it with each other!

We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
U + ME = EMU
This is making reference to the classic boyband mockumentary 2ge+her.
I'd love to see how the rest of their conversation turned out, though.
I tried to use u + me = us as an answer to a problem on my Differential Equations exam my first year of college. It didn't work out so well.
Looking back, however, I think I was smitten over some sexy senior. Hope it worked for them though, nerd love is awesome.

One nice thing about this piece is that you can get to the bottom and continue again from the top without a break. Except then you get caught in reading it over and over again with the same result.

Wow! Calculus has become a lot simpler than when I was in college! If I only knew U + me=US, maybe I wouldn't have failed it.
U + ME + X = Me, getting my ass kicked.
X = Ex-boyfriend with jealousy and anger-management issues.
Librarian's right. This note is like a moebius strip. there is no begining and no end. I'd be willing to bet that the other side of the note treats not calculus, but quantum physics.

thank you for posting this...i graduated from IU in may and you talking about the stacks made me reminisce about the (few) times i spent studying there. it's endearing to read this innocent flirting when i know many people who've had sex among those books. unfortunately i didn't mark that one off my bucket list.
