Mary's Danish
FOUND by Charles Casey in Woodstock, GA
I stumbled across this gem while doing a clean up job for a friend of mine on a rental property of his, apparently left at some point over the years by a previous tenant. Possibly a friend of the man in the middle of the photo? I recognize Matt Cameron and Chris Cornell from Soundgarden. The photo was apparently taken around the "Badmotorfinger" era judging by Chris' hair length. I can't, however place the man in the middle of the photo. The Polaroid was completely falling apart and the back was hanging together by a thread.

My initial thought was that it was one of the band members from Stuck Mojo... but I think he's too small (the one in the polaroid).

Is the yellow skin color from the hepatitis?

Other than that, all I've got at the moment is a request for more of Robert Keim's photos. Please.

mary's danish is an 80s band this is so awesome.

and the yellow is because someone peeled off the back of the picture, hence the thing hanging off the bottom.

Well maybe the yellow skin tone can be explained by what's in the little plastic red cup. We ALL know what's always in the little red plastic cup.

What's it say on Hootie's hat?

And then there's the larger philosophical question: what is the relation between a Hootie and a Hooter?

I'm pretty sure that's not Hootie. But that would explain the look on Chris Cornell's face.

I was just watching a documentary on film restoration. Interesting that the deterioration of what's called "the yellow layer" leads to just this sort of yellowish greenish tinge to flesh tones on film. You'd think that if the "yellow layer" was gone, so would the yellow.

Obviously no yellow layer here!

Love the spam question: Mix yellow and blue paint and get what colour? Green, as in Polaroid!

Cake
Rock'n'Roll Lifestyle

Well, your CD collection looks shiny and costly.
How much did you pay for your bad Moto Guzi?
And how much did you spend on your black leather jacket?
Is it you or your parents in this income tax bracket?

Now tickets to concerts and drinking at clubs,
Sometimes for music that you haven't even heard of.
And how much did you pay for your rock'n'roll t-shirt
That proves you were there,
That you heard of them first?

How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
Ah, tell me.

How much did you pay for the chunk of his guitar,
The one he ruthlessly smashed at the end of the show?
And how much will he pay for a brand new guitar,
One which he'll ruthlessly smash at the end of another show?
And how long will the workers keep building him new ones?
As long as their soda cans are red, white, and blue ones.
And how long will the workers keep building him new ones?
As long as their soda cans are red, white, and blue ones.

Aging black leather and hospital bills,
Tattoo removal and dozens of pills.
Your liver pays dearly now for youthful magic moments,
But rock on completely with some brand new components.

How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?
How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle?

Excess ain't rebellion.
You're drinking what they're selling.
Your self-destruction doesn't hurt them.
Your chaos won't convert them.
They're so happy to rebuild it.
You'll never really kill it.
Yeah, excess ain't rebellion.
You're drinking what they're selling.
Excess ain't rebellion.
You're drinking,
You're drinking,
You're drinking what they're selling.

I saw Soundgarden at Lollapalozoa '96, and I think this may be from that time period. It really does look like Darius Rucker (a.k.a. -Hootie) in the middle of Matt and Chris. I thought that H&TBF might have also been part of that show, but I googled it and it doesn't appear that they were, so that blew that theory. Guess you could say it blew it like a blowfish!

I picture the person who lost this as one of those wanna'be rocker, stuck in the 90's types:

"Dude, I swear to you I met Soundgarden and Hootie and the Blowfish on the same damn day back in the 90's...

...If I could just remember where I stashed that picture. Pass me the bong...

This is a great find! I love that it was scanned or sent to you with the back barely hanging on to dear life by those tiny threads of film. I assume like a few other folks this was on the 1996 Lolapalooza tour which I attended. Maybe the guy rockin' the Mary's Danish hat is a just a lucky fan or possibly a roadie for Soundgarden or one of the other groups on the tour? We may never know. One thing I do know with 100% certainty is that it is NOT Darius Rucker aka Hootie. Hope to see you guys get around to putting together a new Polaroid book soon with this gem included.
+ January 26, 2009 11:27 AM +

I think the guy in the middle is James Oliver Bradley Jr., Mary's Danish's drummer back in the day (actually, he's a very respected percussionist outside of his association with "the Danish and I'm sure the Soundgarden guys were familiar with him.) That would place this photo as pre-1993, when M.D. split. I had an identical hat at one time, may still. Last I knew Mr. Oliver was living in Amsterdam.

my initial thought was it was from around 1992, because that was exactly what Chris Cornell looked like in the movie Singles. But he did keep that look up until "Black Hole Sun" era ...
I don't care the year... it's just nice to see the Chris Cornell they way I'd like to remember him.
Before the solo stuff ... and everything else he did besides Temple of the Dog and Soundgarden.

@ Clover in the Lawn: Me either! But I would have kept this famous find, because I really got off on the colors. I love how Hootie-Rock, in the middle, is so green!

I'm getting ready to go off in a totally new direction in my art, and this photo gives me some great inspiration for using radical, garish colors for creepy skin tones.

My first thought, too, was that the dude in the middle was the drummer for Mary's Danish. A friend of mine talked with him for five minutes after a concert back in the day, and was extremely jazzed that he had just "hung out with a rock star." Further evidence: I can't imagine anyone wearing a Mary's Danish cap except a member of Mary's Danish.

The man in the middle is indeed James Bradley Jr. the drummer from Mary's Danish (and presently, the drummer of Crazy Town.) I'm sure MD toured with Soundgarden somewhere in the 1989-1992 period, just not sure when. Anyways, James is a phenomenal drummer, apparently he's been a professional drummer since the age of 4 (!) and he's also played with Chuck Mangione, Anita Baker, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys and many more besides the previously mentioned bands he's been a member of. Check his out his website at http://www.jamesbradleyjr.com/ .
