Family A-sail
FOUND by Kim Gaul in Manhattan, NY
Walking down 11th Avenue, I spot this family photo on the sidewalk next to a car dealership. Dad, two lovely daughters and the photographer mom. The picture find was two blocks distant from the Hudson River. They abandoned ship and subsequent boating memories to urban turf.

Aargh, methinks the one in the foreground is the black sheep of the family, mom didn't even focus on her. the two are so smiley, the third seems so distant

not just another mouth in the lipstick vogue
After mother died and sister's face went all blurry, it's no wonder they returned to the sea of humanity from the sea of... water.

He had bought a large map representing the sea,
Without the least vestige of land:
And the crew were much pleased when they found it to be
A map they could all understand.

"Other maps are such shapes, with their islands and capes!
But we've got our brave Captain to thank:
(So the crew would protest) "that he's bought us the best--
A perfect and absolute blank!"

This was charming, no doubt; but they shortly found out
That the Captain they trusted so well
Had only one notion for crossing the ocean,
And that was to tingle his bell.

Is the flag at half-mast, or just not raised? I dunno much about boats and boating; was only on one twice, and it was mostly at anchor while people swam. I don't swim, so sitting on the boat was nice. Very soothing.

Everybody stay calm. Lisa, can you get a shot and focus on the tentacles coming from behind my left leg. It's already wrapped around Lil Kim and she's starting to get a little funky!

@ Con Brio ... on the other hand, you lived to remember your boring childhood - unlike the two gals in this photo (which had been "accidentally lost" from the evidence locker at the district police station there on 11th Avenue).

There hadn't been a pirate trial in New York since the 1600's, but Cap'n Bernie somehow knew ways to keep things lively as the Coast Guard finally tracked him down and dragged him back to Governor's Island for the hanging. And he thought he would be able to get out into international waters before the world financial market crashed.

Poor Mr Madoff. He was so close, too.

Maybe it's just that the picture is blurry, but it looks like the "daughter" that's standing with Dad could be the Mom. I don't know too many girls who would wear whatever that thing is on her head. Maybe a magnify would help?

The first thing I thought of were pictures of the Kennedy's. A bygone era of plastered on smiles..The daughter in front isn't smiling big enough and you get blurred out when that happens.Pretty Pictures.

We come on the Sloop John B., my grandfather and me.
Around Nassau town we did roam.
Drinking all night, got into a fight,
Well I feel so break up, I want to go home.

[Everybody join in!]

So hoist up the John B's sails, see how the main sail sets,
Call for the captain ashore, and let me go home.
Let me go home, I want to go home,
Well I feel so break up, I want to go home.

I agree with Pitseleh. I also think the girl/mom standing with the guy looks like Granny from The Beverly Hillbillies.

Marvin Lee Aday in the role of a lifetime.
A three hour TOUR.

girls with long hair who're sailing the windy seas (or riding along in convertibles) often still wear such things on their heads. It's an attempt to keep their hair in check. (it really stings when the wind whips it around into your eyes, it gets in hopeless knots, it sticks to your lipgloss.. Pain in the ass.)

I agree that Mom's behind the camera. Probably ALWAYS behind the camera.

Pitseleh in England, I googled Kim (the iritating one) and she's an artist
http://kimgaul.com/ from New York probably a friend of Davie's.

However, I love this find. Makes me feel good.

@ Clover ... it's the U.S. yacht ensign.

For illustration, description, and statement about its legal authority, see:

Tim thought he was buying a licensed yacht, but it turned out to be some trashy sailboat. He didn't want to get another flag, so he kept the yacht flag anyway. He was one of those old men who remarries to an incredibly young wife, so the girl with the strange head ornament is his wife. His daughter looks forlorn as she sits for the picture.

brainproblem situiation in my head
About the two in the back... the way the girl's pants match the dude's shirt made me see a guy holding a torso only. It really freaked me out. Then I thought it was a dude holding half of a life-sized cardboard cut-out of a girl. Only when the absolute stupidity of both thoughts were realized did I see a girl leaning to one side...

Clover in the Lawn, NOT on the YACHT (hey that rhymes!)
To me it looks like the young woman sitting on the boat could be the mother. She looks about the same age as the dad to me, but of course it's hard to tell because her face is blurred. The girl standing with her dad looks about 10 years old. The photographer could be anyone.. maybe a brother or uncle or the owner of the boat. I don't understand how the finder came up with her conclusion of who's who.

Thanks Librarian, I don't know much about yachts -- I can't even remember how to spell it (thanks to spell check I was able to figure it out.. seems like there should be a "g" in there, but it never looks right!)

can't any of you tell this is fake? photoshopped. maybe literally cut and pasted, or something. look at the flag behind the dad, but overlapping onto the daughter. these muffukkas probably don't even know each other, and you all are having fantasies and delusions about them lol.

It's a lovely photo. And I agree with Clover, I think the woman in the foreground could be the mother.

@ yet another stupid name : If photoshopped, they did a good job reflecting the seated woman's seat and legs. It's possible that the flag was photoshopped in, but it's also possible that the woman's hair just happens to be similarly shaped and positioned to the flag corner. Finally, I see no need to refer to these unknown people with the term you use -- especially since they have done nothing to offend you. You have a right to your opinion about the photo and it's origins, but why not simply be civil and polite in expressing it?
