East London Lady
FOUND by Nicole Andrews in a London car park
There's a used furniture place under a railway bridge near my house. When I went to buy a desk, the shop was closed. So I had a look around the car park out the front and found this picture amongst the stones. She looks strong and confident.

I don't know which is more hideous: those huge fashion goggles she's sporting or the little rectangle glasses that are all the rage today. Who comes up with these goofy things? When I started wearing glasses at age 13 back in the 60's, the predominant style was the "siamese cat-eye with rhinestones in the corners. UGH!

And to my eyes she's being attacked by a blue ghost with a microphone.

Eusta B, you forgot those "look, "fun" plastic" frames in kool kandy kolours that were so "in" a year or two back. They were hideously expensive, poor quality and just plain hideous. No one looks good in white tiny-rectangle frames where the temple is thicker than the lens.

Fortunately where I live we are allowed to bring old frames to have lenses fitted. I am hanging onto my favourite, discreet wireframes as long as possible.

@baby basil: LOL! I must have missed those, because I go for decades before I break down & get new glasses.

I hate how the sexy little salesgirls (oops, fashion consultants) put those creepy things on your face for you & then gush about how fabulous you look. I just want to slap em across the face for telling such bold-faced lies. I mean, if time has ravaged a gal, she sure doesn't want to draw attention! See photo above.

My glasses are so discreet they don't even have frames.

She probably doesn't look as strong and confident in the other photo that was taken at the same time: the profile shot ... with the arrest warrant number under it.

I do love used furniture stores under bridges. And I love the way the finder, Nicole Andrews, made the best of a disappointing situation.. finding treasure in place of expectation.

Clover in the sky with glasses
Every other year my insurance pays for new frames and lenses, and every year it pays for new lenses. So I save my old frames, or I buy vintage frames for $5.00 from St. Vincent de Paul or Value Village or some funky cool used clothing shop, and have the new lens prescription put in them. I know I'm lucky to have such great vision insurance. They also pay for an exam every year ($15 co-pay). I don't suppose it will last; it's too good to be true. Over the last 9 years I've collected 4 pairs of glasses and one pair of sunglasses that I can change according to my mood. (It took me awhile to catch on how to best work the system.

No one should have to go without glasses! It's really sad that some of my students need glasses but don't have them, because their families can't afford them. One of my students was hit by a car as she was walking home from school. She wasn't injured, but her glasses frame and one lens were broken. So she wore them, sans lens and with duct tape, for a couple of months until she was able to get a new pair -- paid for, I think, by a charity organization.

Something is wrong with this picture.

Noelle!

Didn't recognize you without your smile.

So glad you got your new glasses so you don't have to screw your face up like this any more.

xx

(Seriously -- she does look a bit like my friend Noelle, who lives in South-east London. But Noelle always smiles and certainly doesn't have glasses like these, at least not since I've known her.)

Note -- if this was for a UK passport photo it would be rejected (pulling a face, eyes not visible through glasses). Which is maybe why it was lying on the ground!

East London, huh? I would have pegged her for Long Island Italian for certain! The power of her disapproving pursed lips is profound, despite the fact that she's probably dead by now! Smile for the camera? You want her to smile for the camera? You've got some freakin' nerve asking her to smile for the camera after how you've disappointed her, your father, your grandmother, and do we even need to mention your third cousin Alma, Madone! the grief you've given us your whole pitiful life? You wanna smile, *here's* your smile, you're going to hell!
