We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
What was your first clue about the club?
Why are they all looking in different directions?
The last guy on the right? I dig his coat.
thats awesome - the skull on the table cloth was the first thing i noticed...
I once saw a documentary claiming that S & B is the real "man behind the curtain"--the secret society that runs America and directs its future.
Either that, or these fellas had just read "Treasure Island" when it was a new best-seller and decided to get together in order to drink rum and talk like pirates. Arrrrr!
Winthrop, fifth from the right, just let a raunchy one and is too ashamed to look at the camera. Only Calaveras, dead center, has noticed yet.
I think you should give this to the university archives.
In the walls of Yale University? Next to the moat?
Fully bearded guy has 'of' written on his forehead.
Someone from the future has just appeared telling them that Bush will be a member one day.
They are all stunned with disbelief.
Step back from the native American remains! Put him back in the grave, if you please.
Have you read 'Carter Beats the Devil' by Glen David Gold? It's all in there (although he concludes by implying it may all be a sham).
Amazing book.
He says the Skull and Bones Society were a division of the Illuminati who met in Lodge Room 322 at Yale and were 'devoted to world domination (or so it was said) through secrecy and ambiguity'. Each member carried a tiny ivory skull 'with a three-digit gilt number embossed on its jaw'.

WHen you get group portraits like this in 19th-century prints or paintings, with everyone looking in different directions, it's often because they weren't actually together at the time and the individual faces have been 'pasted up' from other sources into the group picture. Almost looks as if this has happened here, though it seems unlikely. Maybe they're all just trying to look 'secretive'.
Hard to imagine these guys are just a bunch of students, aged maybe 21 or 22 at the most? How different from their equivalents today (though I gather that in these straitened times, in the UK at least, students have taken to dressing neatly in suits and ties in order to impress possible future employers).
...on magnify looks like he can't be more than 15 years old - if that old! Suppose the first guy on the left is some sort of faculty advisor of some sort? Looks to be much older than the rest except for the guy in dead center. But he's, ya know, dead.
Looks like the He-man woman haters club.
These dudes look like a barrel of laughs. Roll out the keg! Bring on the dancing girls! Reanimate the skeletal remains!
The last guy on the right looks like John Boy Walton and the man sitting on the left looks like Ken Jennings (the 70something day Jeopardy champ).
@Jonathan, thank you for knowing how to spell "straitened" correctly in context.
I and my brand new copy of "Tristram Shandy" both thank you.
The guy on the far left - has some man
camel-toe action going on....
@Jonathan -
Having done some work with Photoshop - would say this is not an examplew where they placed the heads on afterwards - they may have blacked out some of the eyes to compensate for blinking but the rest is too seamless for the tech they had at the time.
Yeah, just why are they looking in all different directions? Maybe a comment on their political asperations...some for the presidency, some for congress, some local government, all with the same goal - power! Muhhahahahahaaahhahha
Hard to tell...has the clock in the picture just struck midnight? Perhaps some of the ones looking in different directions got caught unaware that the time was at hand, and the picture would be taken at midnight, no matter what they were looking at?
Maybe it's the coats, but they all look real short. On the left, two guys have their hands almost in fists, I think this is because the photographer made them touch and maybe it's arousing their homosexual feelings for each other. The other guy on the left has his hands behind his back, I think he has a wedgie. The guy on the far right will be played by Leonardo DiCaprio and the guy in the chair with mustache and crossed legs is going to be a crazy hot mad scientist/doctor/serial killer.
Those secret men's clubs..what is up with that? Remember in the Flintstone's cartoon, the Water Buffaloes?
Cracks me up.
@Sammy - yea what's the deal with no stupid hats? These guys would have looked at you really weird if you had said to them :
"In the future you will wear a rimless hats, with a single long tassle, and you will drive a small motorized vehicle that can carry only one man - and you will drive in figure 8 formations at high speeds amongst parade goers..."
Possible reasons for the guys facing all different directions:
a) the photographer said 'Just give me your best side' and since all of them thought they had a different best side....
b) the women of the Flagon and Stein drinking club down the street from Skull and Bones were arrayed around the studio preparing themselves for their group photo, and each of the guys was looking at a different one....
c) the only thing that ever united Bones members (other than 'old money' and a sense of entitlement) was their attraction to the secret initiation ceremony; they actually were headed off in all sorts of different directions - and it started with this photo....
I can think of so many clever things but I don't want the S & B to come and haunt me...they look like they could really do some spooking.
For more pictures of these exciting guys:

@Librarian -
"A" Seems plausible since most of them didn't know what that phrase even meant - when asked they all got a quizzical look and started
"harumpfing" and clearing their throats....
"B" Seem less plausible since these guys probably were all naked with each other 15 minutes after this photo was flashed which was went on all the time in regard to "C" - after a while they did it only for the ceremony, and the money and entitlement became secondary.
The 3rd guy in from the left is just itching to get to the ceremony ritual part as can be seen in his rubbing up against the guy sitting in the chair shoulder.
The remaining members (those not killed at San Juan Hill) last meeting was on the Titanic.
@ Hiplainsdrifter ... makes sense.
And it gives added meaning to the phrase "tapping prominent members of the junior class" to become the newest Bonesmen.

This is awesome!
Gotta love super creepy secret societies...
the fifth guy from the right is a major creeper though...check out the look on his face. Wouldn't want to wake up with that standing over me.
I bet the reason why they aren't all looking at the camera is the age old classic where the camera man says, "on 3!" and then snaps it on two.
4th from the right is Flargy. Standing on a box.
The guy on the far left does look like Ken Jennings. That time traveling bastard!
I think it makes for a cool picture with them all looking different directions.
If I'm reading his cohort year right, it's possible that William Howard Taft is in this photo somewhere. Obviously before he got enormous.
No, W.H. Taft was in the S&B in 1878.

The fellas in the back seem a bit dim...not sure where the camera is, it seems.
Great find, great condition; would be very easy to restore Photoshop.

Try tinyurl.com. You can paste in your long URL and turn it into something smaller and more manageable. (because I really, really DO wanna see that picture!)
It's the original Rolling Thunder Revue line-up.
