Man Dying
FOUND by Mark Voorhes in Laramie, Wyoming
I found this crayon drawing blowing around in a pile of leaves outside of my apartment in September, 2004. I kept it, simply for the fact that it was so creepy. When I heard about FOUND this drawing came to mind. The drawing is haunting, especially after all the media attention to the Matthew Shepherd incident. The drawing shows a person firing a bullet into the bodiless head of a screaming man while saying "Stop calling me a fag." An arrow indicates the fact that the man is dying. The drawing is made on the back of a photo of a Dave Matthews t-shirt from a computer printer and carries the University of Wyoming Dept. of Theatre and Dance letterhead.
So easy
Yeah, I don't like the Geico cavemen, either.

Sparkle finger is entertainment now? This is gross and sad.

I thought it said "Quit rolling me a fog" at the top. For a moment I thought that was a common expression until I reread it and realized I need glasses.
I like the little wolf at the bottom.

Hey Lauren...how do you like the man with the bullet in the brain? I'm not trying to pick a fight, but this is disturbing! Nothing cute about it.

shell, not pick a fight, but there IS something cute about the drawing and its clearly labeled at that!

todd...holy crap...are you my antisocial brother? There is nothing cute about that pic. You can label a blue moon pink...doesn't make it so.

The gun man has very ragged shorts. There, a nice bland comment that hopefully will not offend anyone.
I don't think this is all that disturbing. People doodle all sorts of fucked up stuff that doesn't mean anything.

This is a better drawing than some of the so called art in museums. An emotional drama queen must have drawn it, possibly uncle Bill or one like him. We should not hate what we do not understand. Is and is not creepy, schizophrenia is twice as fun now. I think of the Violent Femmes when I be lookin' at dis note.

I agree that the face is very well drawn. To convey emotion like that, let alone to achieve such a powerful depiction of the human face (notoriously difficult to draw)...well this is right up there with Munch's "Scream." And since it looks like it was done with crayon, doubly so.

And for all those who are reading way too much into this:

Creepy's the word, it's the place, it's emotion
Creepy's the way you are feeling.
It's not the artist's intention,
It's just the way you react,
What are you sayin' here?

We take the pressure and we draw the things
That we see everyday, the way a vocalist sings
There is a chance that you will take it wrong,
But we can't help that, we have to be who we are
Creepy's the word...

I particularly like the gunman's shirt, its precision makes the dead head's imprecision all the more emotional.
I don't think it is creepy or cute, more sad and heart warming- sad because the person has to put up with being called a fag, warming because they found a good outlet for their anger.

Hey Shelly belly...I don't recall saying I found the wolf cute. And how do I like the man? I don't like him, I love him. In fact, I find him kind of cute. Everyone is cordially invited to our wedding.

@Lauren and shelly: There is no wolf! Look again, it is labeled "cute bunny." Why, wolfie, what big EARS you have! "The better to eat carrots with, my dears."

Saff in in Fire
the little creature at the bottom that is labeled as "cute" (not saying whether it is or not) is not a wolf, but they clearly labeled it as a bunny.

I also like how the artist signed their name in the middle of the crayon picture. It could possibly go up in an art museum

My only comment is that the juxtaposition of the cute bunny among flowers to the hirsute homophobe getting shot in the head reminds me of how much I hate the Dave Matthews Band. Like DM as an actor, though.

Miss Scarlet...interesting comment. Like, random, in a way. In fact, I am pondering your post even more than the actual find.

Me enjoying the cool, cloudy day in Washington
This makes me sad for all my gay guy friends, who have been called 'fag' and every other negative word in the book. Obviously, it takes a toll after a time. I was involved in theater dept. at my university, and it was a safe haven for one and all.
I think this picture says says a million words.
It's deep and important.

Could this crayon creation be interpreted as Lydia's resignation?

I don't know about bunny booobs, but the cute bunny appears to have a 'stache worthy of a Village Person.

brain problem situation in my head
No, no!!! You people have it all wrong. What it says at the top is "Quick, roll me a fag!"

The headless fellow has a pouch of tobacco and the man with the gun is clearly in nicotine withdrawal, even though he has a 21 mg Nicorette patch on the back of his hand. The smoking caveman must have been out of rolling papers, because nic-fiending gun-toter pulled the trigger.

The bunny was the only witness to this gristly murder. Now we have to hire an animal psychic to figure out who killed the caveman...

It's the pilot episode for CSI: Laramie.

I agree, Dog Breath, about this being better than a lot of "art" in museums. To me the ragged short shorts and "festive" shirt look like clothing that could be viewed as something a gay man might wear.
I think it's interesting (and I'm probably the only one!) that various aspects of the work are labelled, much like some ancient Greek pottery.
+ August 08, 2009 04:54 PM +
no one of consequence
The piercing blue eye of the dying man is mesmerizing. I love that a few simple scrawls of crayon can come together to create and capture that feeling.

I laughed out loud at the Geico caveman comment though.

Are sparkle fingers anything like Jazz Hands (DAD!)?

I think the contrast of the dark, brownish face and light, pastel coloured other aspects of the picture is intriguing. What a fascinating find!

The last thing I would want to see is an angry fag in cutoffs and checker shirt, with his cute pet bunny, a butterfly, being directed to shoot me in the back of the head by the psychic urgings an entity known only as
"sparkle finger" -
