Wish List
FOUND by Dave Mosner in Hampden, Baltimore, Maryland
Hamden, known for its Christmas light display on 34th street, has a lesser known New Year's celebration on the same street. People throng 34th waiting for "our" version of the Times Square ball drop and the eventful Baby New Year appearance. Baby New Year happens to be a tubby middle aged guy wearing nothing but a diaper, bonnet and a fu manchu. He descends his stairs, scampers about and high fives the gathered merrymakers. Good times...you should swing by some year. Anyhow, my wife alertly retrieved this from the corner of Chestnut and 34th. We enjoyed passing it around amongst friends at the Hon Bar... discussing our hopes for the new year and wishing the person luck in achieving their goals...hope they located the educational DVD mentioned. I need one to help me find my "bliss".

very lofty goals, to be sure but what exactly does "to become direct like breathing" mean?

I would like it if drawing would dominate. It would be a nice change from football, war, or mass consumption. I don't think that's the way it went in 2006, though. Maybe in 2008.

Does writing it down make you more likely to do it? Even if you lose the list? Or does it just make you feel like a bigger loser if you *don't* do it, so you ditch the list?

Yeah, I thought it said "Stupid--up and running!" too. Good advice for me, which I will take. I need to get up and running this year, out of my couch potato existence. Or rather "mouse potato."

I think the "DVD-learn how to do it" means they want to learn to make their own; perhaps film the creative process. I have a painter friend who does this, one of her paintings in process is on YouTube (or was).

"Direct like breathing" means that the person wants their work (painting in this case) to dominate their time so that painting becomes natural, like breathing. Michaelangelo says something similar in his letters/diaries; that the artist must become one with his tools, they must become part of his body, so that the thought flows through them to the medium (marble or paint) in one smooth motion. This is also involved in the writing process; your thoughts flow through your fingers onto the page; or, in these days, screen.

"Complete book for my Mother"--perhaps photographic evidence that painting/drawing is "real work"--or perhaps s/he was illustrating a favourite work for her. Michaelangelo once "illustrated" a friend's journal with scenes of the city.

A line will entwine, wrap, and link all things.

I find this phrase very interesting.

It kinda makes me think that whoever wrote it was dosing their brains out for the New Year Celebration.

I wish I could go to Baltimore. Dave Mosner's description is awesome!!

I don't know how things worked out for the listmaker, but MY 2006 was, in fact, dominated by drawing. All things were, indeed, wrapped and entwined by a single line, and I found myself observing, recording, and honoring chain reactions - several of which I was able to build upon.

I guess I has a pretty successful year.

2007, though, was a total bummer. I wonder whose list I was living out?

That line is So poetic!
"A line will entwine, wrap, and link all things"

It's directly opposite in meaning to, but just as lyrical as the famous poem that V.S. Naipal used for the title of his book:

"Higher and higher in an ever spiraling gyre, the falcon no longer hears the falconer.
Things fall apart; the center cannot hold.."

But HOW much more optimistic is THIS comment!

i love this- and the painting like breathing i take to mean the zennish experience of when the art creates itself-

'a line will entwine, wrap and link all things' is splendid.

scratch my resolutions, (boring, boring, lose weight blah, blah, blah) i'm adopting these.
i watch (kinda) dvd's while i work- that and listen to the kid play war-crack. essential.
i bet the book is an altered book.
is odd when someone else thinks like you-

Wrye,
I agree, this is a very poetic list. Mine is along the lines of most women my age, this one sounds much more interesting. And it *is* wierd when you read something that sounds like you could have written it yourself, but you know you didn't.

I thought "all size canvases" was "all size earwashes," or "all size carwashes." And "DVD learn how to do this" means they can't operate the DVD player. I have given up trying to learn how to operate our DVD player.

I think we have an aspiring poet, as well as artist, here. To write more poetry is a good New Year's resolution.

(YAWN) Maybe this isn't a list of goals or resolutions. MAYBE....this is a rough draft to a really, REALLY s**ity play! Wow, that didn't make better.
I was expecting something great for New Years here. I got really let down. That's ok. PostSecret.com has a postcard of a woman claiming she used a vegetable for pleasure then chopped it up in her husband's salad as revenge. So, I'm good.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!

I don't understand wanting a line to neatly wrap and link all things, but I wish them well. Good New Year wishes for observing and recording all chain reactions also.
For myself, I hope for random and astounding surprises. Variety and mystery are the spice of life.
And I appreciate the complainers too. It would be so boring if all the comments were : " Oh, that is so precious! You are so funny. No, you are funny. Well we agree then, don't we? Why, yes we do. " Whatever.
Happy New Year!

I totally understand the line that entwines, wraps and links. Kind of like a silver thread.

I love that the writer is so creatively inspired, and then intends to seek help from a DVD and the Apple Store. Hahaha!

Wrye and basil, thank you for your insights.

Wrye, that's why Found is so great, discovering that there ARE other people who think like you!

This Find kind of hovers between being poetic and insightful and being someone struggling to write down what she (for some reason I assume it's a she, proably of a certain age) is being taught in art classes.

Far be it from me to tell anyone what is or is not boring, but where's the poetry in your soul?? I agree, Night, this is one of the best (pass the sherry, uncle...).

Thank you to all my Found friends for your chain reactions, which have been honoured, observed, recorded, and built upon where possible throughout the past year. And thank you to the Found guys for bringing us together.

Forward to 2008 when a line will entwine, wrap and link all things. The secret is, whatever you do, whether drawing or something else, do it till it's natural and 'direct like breathing'. Then make it your own and you can conquer the world.

Happy New Year everybody!

When I read the first half of this, I immediately thought that someone was getting their fortune told by a psychic, and writing notes on what she said. "This year, a line will wrap around all things..." REALLY sounds like what I imagine Miss Cleo predicts for people.

Dear Marie,
After the Finder's colorful description, I thought the very same thing.. so I did a quick google image search, and http://www.citypaper.com/sb/44576/5574.jpg
this was the first good, relevant hit. Lo and Behold, it's almost exactly as I'd pictured it in my lil ol' mind!

Clover in the rain
It occurred to me late in the middle of the night after reading this, and after finally finishing writing the last of my Christmas cards, that this was probably someone's rough draft of her holiday greeting card. She is an artist, obviously, and probably makes her own cards every year, with perhaps a poem inside. The inspiration came when she was elsewhere from her home/studio, so she jotted it down on a scrap of paper. Then she added a couple of other things she wanted to get done before Christmas, so she wouldn't forget.

This is exactly like something I would do.

I was wondering if the "to do" part of the writing wasn't to someone else, otherwise, why would the writer say "finish book for *my* mother."?

If it was a note to self, why would the writer specify? (and why do I care? I don't know. it just bugs me. I must solve the mysteries of life.)
