We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
What band is that boring? My money's on Coldplay.
That explains why you hear so many bad mixes today. I always suspected someone was asleep at the console.
He's not asleep. He's recording the song, "No Room 4 Emos."
This is creepy. It looks like he's been shot or something. I wonder why someone punched two holes in the picture? I like drummers!
This photo is actually quite good. I think it's my favorite photo-find since "Pearl."
It looks like he's recording my favorite bassoon and drum duet. I think the engineer is just checking to see if he put on deodorant this morning. From the looks of those monitors, I think they ran out of money before they were done. They're now using a $75,000 mixing deck to record to cassette tape (what IS that white thing sitting on the board?). With the cutbacks in budgets, the musicians now have to share their studio with the quilting class.
wow harvard? LOL.
Hot Babe, those aren't hole punches I don't think, they're part of the speakers.
Also, this looks like an album cover.
Here's another explanation for you. He's not asleep. This is his way of saying 'I can't believe how bad this band is!'
That is a beautiful soundboard.
Nice picture too, but that equipment, holy geez.
OH ! I love this! This just makes me laugh...and does explain a lot about some mixes that are out there.
hahha MC2 that's gotta be it. I wonder what the song would sound like? looks like its not going too well.
Hmmm. Maybe I should have tried to get into Harvard instead. Stimulating.
I'm curious, can someone correct the spelling of Massachusetts, there's an extra "e"?...I'm not one of the grammar/spelling nazis but it's a pet peeve thing...
nah, I'm just a Masshole. ;)
As a producer and engineer I can tell you that he's not asleep. I know that look. That's the "We've been working on this track for 14 hours. We were *this* close to finishing and the [insert instrument] player just blew the take".
Katherine is correct. Those white circles are the white woofers of Yamaha NS-10 speakers, not holes.
Loopy - those monitors (speakers) were THE "go to" nearfield monitors. They were found in every studio in the 80s and 90s, because if you could make your mix sound good on those, they'll sound good anywhere. Honestly. Still used by many. The white thing is not a cassette player but the remote control for a Lexicon 480L digital reverb. Again, ubiquitous. I'm pretty sure that mixing console was way more than $75k.
My guess is that this picture is from the early 90s by the looks of the automation display on the tv above the console but some places still use that stuff.
wow, thanks to rob, i think we just got schooled. for instance, to me, the TV screen looks like it's scoring a round of bowling.
I'd say they're recording the next Jessica Simpson cd . And it looks like PONG to me .
Maybe he forgot his glasses and has to look reallyclose at the mix table.
Rob, I hate to tell you, but you ruined it for us. It is much more fun to speculate on all that crap than it is to actually know what it is.
Rob - I'm so happy that graced us with those wonderful facts. I guess we're all very worthy to have an educated producer amongst us.
OK, I can see the drummer on the left. But is that a person to the right of the mic near the middle - the pea-headed shape? He looks like a featureless person from the game of Life, who threw on a jacket for the occasion.
Rob, I for one liked hearing about the music producing minutae...
hahaha thanks Hot Babe, I saw today's find and thought no one would give me my creepy fix!
Seriously, the things that some people find creepy puzzle me so much.
Rob, you rock! I found this Find uninteresting until you exsplained it.
Logging-I thought it was PONG, too. LOL
After spending an incredibly lousy day at work, my evening has gotten so much better. I've learned something new (thanks Rob), PLUS I've managed to answer the spam question once again. Life is good...
It would only be creepy if the slouched over guy had a knife sticking out of his back...then, given the early 90's feel of it, it could be an opening scene to Quincy or Dianosis Murder...or better yet - MURDER SHE WROTE.
Yeah...my mother likes those shows...
Rob - thanks for the tutorial. It was nice to learn some things I would probably never know. It made the photo more interesting for me. Creepy-NO Interesting - YES
I orginally saw a bowling score screen too...and thought also of PONG.
I think the image on screen looks like an underwater radar. The vertical line is moving across the screen over and over, looking for a blip. Maybe they are searching a nearby lake for the murder weapon.
My guess is that this guy was busted for DUI, and was subsequently sentenced to a full-day session recording Nickelback (or Creed, or Staind, or Disturbed, or...well, you get the point).
Anyway, the poor bastard decided (wisely, I might add) that a handful of oxycontin washed down with a fifth of grain alcohol would be a much more quick and painless way to go than enduring such cruel and unusual punishment.
RIP, brother.
Oh, and why hasn't anybody admonished the finder yet for stealing this photo? Everyone knows that grass is where people put things intended for a specific person, or to get a message out to the general populace. Doesn't anyone have respect for public bulletin grass anymore?
Sorry I ruined it for you Kate. At least I didn't tell you what brand of mixing console it was. I don't know nearly as much about anything else so it won't happen again.
hahahaha I love you, Flargy!
Well, those engineering days are all coming back... Those arent two holes, those are the white cones of Yamaha NS-10s, a studio staple for near-field monitoring. The white device on top of the SSL console is a remote control for the (probably) 2" tape machine in the corner.
As far as the posture, it really can be that boring engineering bad albums.
he was probably recording kara tondorf's music, i am guessing.
Rob: re your comment to Kate - why let lack of knowledge stop you from posting here? Happens all day long from the looks of some... :)

Sorry. The photo inspired me!
Naughty Aelf: thank you for that great Philip Glass joke!
When I find myself becoming impatient with life, I force myself to sit down and listen to LaMonte Young's
"90 XII C. 9:35-10:52 PM NYC, The Melodic Version (1984) of The Second Dream of the High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer From the Four Dreams of China (Gramavision, 1991)."
It's about 45 minutes of four Harmon-muted trumpets playing single notes that are sustained for several minutes before modulating. If I can resist laughing or turning my attention to something else or jumping up and screaming "What's wrong with you people?" then eventually the music wins out and the effect is quite amazing. But getting through the first 15 minutes or so is tough.
Ray, I very much appreciate the information you shared.
I'd like to think it's my ex up in Montreal wishing he were here in Florida... Studio life isn't all it's cracked p to be.
Just for more nerdery, the console looks like an EMI Neve. This is exactly the type of desk that your favourite Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and Queen albums were recorded on in the 70's, so not boring at all really.
I agree with you Scott; this console has too many analog dails (and not enough LED/LCDs) to be something from much later.
I did RP&E at a few studios in the Boston area in the late 70s-early 80s, but I do not recognize this recording space from my ancient experiences. Maybe they actually PAINTED this studio at some time within the past 30 years, in addition to upgrading the equipment!
Ahh the good old days...
plenty of knobs, wires, faders and not an ounce of sunlight. Off to Maui for me.
GEEZ! I hope i never record anything at Harvard. Actually this shouldn't be too hard for me. as i will never get into harvard.
This picture is from Studio A at the New England Institute of Art, and my guess is that the engineer is just frustrated about how bad the musicians are, or he can't get his signal flow right....
Thats a nice picture but what happened to that person.is he sleeping or too much frustated
I do believe he partied with the band! He's an amateur!
