Down on the Beach
FOUND by David Liljemark in Stockholm, Sweden
I found this picture at Clemenstorget (the Clemens square). Whoever and wherever they were, this frozen, happy moment is still with us, shining on after 38 years.

OK, who is going to rescue this dog?

Bjork in Iceland/Mexico

Are they standing in white sand, snow or - could it be - salt?

I think it's Martin Scorsese. Too bad about his daughter's arms.

Nice bathrobes, though.

Are these people famous? Swarmed by paparazzi? Caught on the beach in a private moment... How many cameras are they looking at?

What dog? Do you smell updog?

That man seems to favor one of the women over the other. Can't say I blame him.
+ September 08, 2007 01:14 AM +
think in g it's white sand- like in FL.
Oh Bjork, please don't mention salt. Even in lower case.

I guess 38 some odd years ago, it was the custom in Sweden to wear your housecoat to the beach. (before fashionable wraps, sarongs, etc were the rage.)

Even though there's no resemblance, the dude in the picture reminds me of Hugh Heffner, for some reason. It's all in the attitude.

the man has his arms through his sleeves. the women just have their robes draped over them.

sick gender roles don't even let women wear clothes in a manner that allows them range of motion.

JUST JOKING! please don't harass me.

chrome in the kitchen
Katie, I'm thinking the man is nekkid under his robe. You can see the women's bathing suit straps.. but I think he's going commando. So he needs that range of motion to keep the front closed.
+ September 08, 2007 01:42 AM +
Mom put the hot tub in the kitchen. No one thought that was cool.
My dad went to Hawaii once. He got sand up his shorts and said there's nothing more uncomfortable then damn sand up the shorts, near yer asshole and under the balls and how can anyone enjoy this. He then threw the cheap time-share scuba mask far unto the sea.

"Frozen moment" is right--these folks look COLD!! Maybe that's why the thick robes; it may be cool to swim in freezing seas but getting a chill from a wet bathing suit is another matter.
Hope they made some glühwein to warm up with!

David Liljemark in Stockholm, Sweden
Hi everyone! I'd just like to clarify that I found this photo - dated "Oct 68" - not in Stockholm, but in Lund (a beautiful university town in the south of Sweden), in 2006. (The "Down on the beach" title is of course referring to the great swedish band Union Carbide Productions - last track on their first album. [Note: UCP later evolved into The Soundtrack Of Our Lives]).

The "dog" that supposedly needs saving is the man in the middle of these two not so attractive women. Supposedly. Just answer the question about the dog.

You guys keep saying that the two women and the man are not attractive. However, I think we all know that, as people age, they become 'less attractive' for certain reasons. This find makes me think that these people have been friends for a very long time. Perhaps they wanted to relive a moment they had a long time ago- when they were young and, possibly, when they were more attractive. They do look cold, but they still project happiness in their faces. Their children, if any, are probably their age now. The world is so cold now, I doubt that their children will ever relive any young moments with old friends at the beach- I hope they try.

MC2

Here's my theory. From left to right: daughter, father, mother. I find them all very attractive. With the low, low sun suggesting a northern winter evening and the cloudy sky in the background, I'm wondering where this handsome trio got their fabulous tans?

I hope Rex and/or Flargy will be along shortly to give us a credible back story.

Turbo, my main man: this FIND will be a challenge, even for you!

Happy Saturday to all FOUNDERS!

The daughter-father-mother theory seems plausible to me; I've had the same thought.
(Could the date be from when the camera film was developed, not when the picture was taken?)
+ September 08, 2007 11:58 AM +
Unworthy in intimate loungewear
I agree. This is daughter, dad and mom. Notice how Dad's right elbow is inside Daughters robe? That's quite an intimate posture. The direct look into the camera from Dad suggests that Daughter's husband or fiance is taking the picture, and Dad is trying to convey (in Swedish), "if you hurt my little girl, I will strangle you with my bathrobe belt." (David, maybe you can translate for us?) 8-)

Also, the women's bathrobes are obviously borrowed, as it would be too intimate to actually put your arms in the sleeves of another man's robe. Even in the 60's women had much better taste in loungewear.

Bjork, I suggest you review a few episodes of "What Not to Wear". 8-)

A Kitten in a mitten
I agree with Unworthy about the naked part. And they are most definitely a family. I don't think, however, that there is some kind of tension between Mom and Dad, Terrie. I think that a gust of wind came up and Mom pulled her robe together while Daughter got closer to Dad for warmth. Dad, of course, is stoic and doesn't even feel the cold wind... mostly because his robe was cinched up anyway.

Nice picture. They look happy.

This is a very frightening picture. Reminds me of being a little boy and all of the adults get drunk and sleep til noon. They wake up at our huge beach house and begin to moan and drink bloody marys. Then they run out to the beach after a few drinks for a photo shoot. They kids are left to fix food and do first aid.

Clover in the lawn
I believe October would be near the time of the midnight sun in the northern latitudes. If this is Sweden, it may have been the middle of the night. This would explain the long shadows, and why the people look so tired.

I wonder if they are just about to go swimming. I don't think they've been in the water yet, since their hair isn't wet. I wonder if they were members of the Polar Bears.

There is nothing unattractive about these people. They are beautiful. I wonder where they are now.
+ September 08, 2007 10:53 PM +
dancing in a bathrobe
I was looking at the photo a little close, it's neat to see the date close up. But I just wanted to dispell the rumours of "hue heffner" being nude. Unless his body is oddly shaped then I think I can see his speedo line.

Unfortunately I don't quite know whether I prefer the idea of him naked or in a speedo.

Finally, I kind of like this photo, i'm not being age-ist but they are undeniably old, or at least older than me and it's nice to know that peoplstill do spontaneous things like go to the beach on cold days in bathrobes just for the sake of doing it even if they are grown up.

Night in gale, I'm sorry.. I guess that what I was trying to say didn't come across as clearly as I hoped it would. What I was trying to say is that, these people ARE beautiful (I never really said they weren't) and I think that it's nice that these people are doing something spontaneous despite their age. Make sense? Again, I'm sorry that I didn't come across as clearly as I had hoped- I hope this helps make a little more sense.

SuzyQ in the nude.
Lunar, that is EXACTLY what I thought, I was hoping I wouldn't have to say it. I am actually thinking the woman on our right (his left) is the wife. The other woman, is the "guest star" for their threesome. Either someone they picked up at the local swingers' club, or she was already sleeping with the man and when the wife found out she tried to be cool with it and incorporate the mistress into their bedroom activities. The husband and the mistress are OK with it and each other, the wife not so much... But that's just me.
