anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
Hey, that's the playlist for my mix tape.
...wedding song list....fer-izzle
Jason...? Is this yours?
seduction playlist. fo sho.
ha.
I never dance at weddings. This is why.
Summer of '69- Bryan Adams.
The author of the list certainly has varied tastes! BNL, Dean Martin, Garth and Diana Ross, all on the same list! (and more!)
Most of songs on the list make me want to puke, not dance, not get my gear off, p-u-k-e. I can't even drag up a wry smile for any of the titles.
Wedding, definitely. I'm glad to see Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" (OUR song) made the top 10.
This is somebody's www.cassettefrommyex.com track list -- and he/she wonders why they're an ex...
('Deep Blue Something'? what??)
Cool find, It's nice when people like a wide range of music - more to appreciate.
Since it's mentioned here that it's "wedding list" -gee, it's interesting that the kids are thinking about marraige while still in college.
Will check out the site Jonathan posted - might be funny !
HAHAHA! My first thought was, "Man, I love all these songs!"
And then I read the comments... Lol.
Music that sucks to fall asleep to.
If I had a million dollars - by barenaked ladies
Best song on the list!!
Maybe a senior citizen wedding? Or 50th wedding anniversary party? Glad I wasn't invited.
I was just at a wedding and this is why I left early. That and because they played "Baby got Back".
glad to see bnl on there. an obvious choice but a goodun'.
@Twist:
If it makes you feel any better...I met my hubby @ college and we got married after I graduated three years ago. Likewise, for 10 other friends of mine.
@Reading too much: me too. Hahahaha!
Jason, you should SO record this for your new "Cassette From My Ex" project. Be sure to use Jonathan's comment in the backstory. Haha!
www.cassettefrommyex.com
On My Own is the best song on that list. it will definitely be added to my list! oh how i dream of playing Eponine!!
What? No Slayer?
Oh, yuck. All of these are so over-played.
I don't agree that this is a very "wide range" of music or that the author of the list has "varied taste". In my opinion, the author's musical taste is simply "shitty music".
Anyway, you could hear all of these songs on those typical radio stations that play popular hits since the 50's. Stations like that like to call themselves something like "Mix" or "Variety"; terms that could really be disputed.
Oh goody, Rebecca's here to enlighten us, and tell us all what kind of music isn't shitty, and what kind of radio station we should be listening to. Please, Rebecca! Tell us More!!
Ha! You're right, I hope somebody finds the original tape and sends it in. Would be an awesome one-two find. Glad you all are liking the Cassette site, we're having a lot of fun with it. Enjoy!
@Turbo: There's a fine chance that Slayer will be played at my wedding. The Fiance is a brutal fan!

I noticed some of you have a thing for smarties: might want to check out the above article!
As for this play list... Reminds me of a Bill Bailey (I think) sketch about being a DJ at a wedding. I don’t remember it word for word, but part of it was about using the request songs to figure out who is who. My friend and I quote the one line all the time, which is “And then there is the sloppy drunk guy who comes up part way through and demands you play Song for the Dumped: Maybe he’ll meet up with the sobbing girl who requested Landslide right after the first dance. You can pretty much assume those two are single.”
Bloody link didn't post...

I love this playlist- I would download every song if I didn't already have them! And, I kid you not, most of these will be played at my wedding... I cannot wait!
Oh my word, this is hilarious. I have lost a number of playlists like this in my day, though the songs were a bit different. I apologize for any offense, but these songs are definately not varied. They've all got the same underlying theme of shallow (but fun!) shmooziness. Like the kind of stuff we know is overplayed, but will leave on when it comes up on the radio. And seriously, who doesn't sing along to Build me up Buttercup? The kicker is the Andrew Lloyd Webber at the end. They've officially lost all dignity.
Semi-new Found-watcher, first-time poster...
I just had to give a Woo-Hoo for my beloved BNL getting some props here, although I would hardly describe Million Dollars as "overplayed," Rebecca, at least here in the US.
Follow You Down -- Gin Blossoms (another non-shitty band IMHO)
At first I thought it was a message written in song titles. This magic moment on the street where you live I could have danced...wonderful tonight.
But now I see it's just a song list. At least it doesn't have Love Hurts.
I hope I never take a road trip with this person.
Are you kidding me Million Dollars has been played I'd describe it as overkill.
I don't listen to the radio much, and if I do, it's not to a station that would play many of these songs. the only time I hear "can't take my eyes off of you" is when I watch 10 things I hate about you. The only time I hear "if I had a million $" is when I play a BNL CD (all too infrequently, mostly during road trips though.)
And at least the list doesn't have Killing me Softly, You've got a Friend, I am woman or both sides now. So I'm okay with this list. Too much country, though.
(although I think it was Joni Mitchell who did a recent cover of Both Sides Now that was featured on Love, Actually, and I thought it was incredibly well done)
Hey Night--I'm here! I've got nothing on the Find though. All the clever things I was thinking have already been said.
Mistress Smarty-pants in A City Near You: I'm one of those people who have a thing for Smarties (the American kind not the chocolate candy kind) but I can't get your link to open. I believe Smarties (the real ones) cure hangovers. But I never eat them. I just go straight for the Bloody Mary (skip the pickle). Much faster results that way.
Recently I decided to have a 90's themed birthday party... The 80's is (sadly) coming back in style and the 70's and 60's themes are played out... So my friend and I (with whom I have "Bad Music Contests") decided on 90's. I searched for Best of the 90's sites, and only came up with like 30 songs/bands. So my friend and I get on the phone and come up with (I kid you not) no less than 290 bands we lived and breathed for in the 90's...
P.S. The cassettefrommyex.com site looks AWESOME. I can't wait til there's more!
What? No Vivaldi? No Mozart?? No 'Muskrat Love'???
my first thoughts were actually funeral songs or something... with the Follow You Down (which I assumed was the Gin Blossoms song)...
but maybe not.
and Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton was my prom song. Worst song of all time... along with Wicked Game by Chris Isaak or Isaaks. And Pour Some Sugar on Me. I know someone is going to disagree but whatever. Just my opinion.
If they HAD to have a song from the GREASE soundtrack, thank goodness it's not Hopelessly Devoted. (ack ack!!)
Your Love is Driving me Crazy, by Sammy Hagar and Ballroom Blitz by (the) Sweet would definitely be on my playlist.
Librarian, I'm likin' the way you're thinkin'.
Love! Love will keep us Togetha!
@Tired in Bed- I hate Chris Isaak too, but check out Wicked Game covered by Giant Drag. It's actually... pretty.... f*in.... GOOD!
@ I must subject you all to my opinion....(although I think it was Joni Mitchell who did a recent cover of Both Sides Now that was featured on Love, Actually, and I thought it was incredibly well done) ????????????
Both Sides Now is Joni Mitchell's song. I don't think you can say she did a cover of it, if its her own song. You can say that she re-recorded it.... a cover???? how old are you, 20? omg.....
There is no way this is a wedding play list. Maybe this person was making a student film and was making a list of possible songs to use. Or maybe an anniversary party for the parents. Or maybe a list of songs this person doesn't like.
Awwww, how romantic. That is soooo clever, putting all the sappy romance songs that have been played trillions of times on a single cassette/cd. I never would have thought of that... Thank you author, for providing this to us, if only for us to ridicule and mock.
I want a copy of this CD, as cheesy as it may be...
Who would put "Tears from Heaven" on a wedding cd? I mean honestly why would you want a song that Eric Clapton wrote for his dead son at a wedding?
Also this person does not have varied taste in music, they like pop music that they can sing along to.
Both Sides Now
Artist: Judy Collins
Peak: #8
Year: 1968
===============
In 2000, Joni Mitchell released "Both Sides Now," an album of jazz standards backed by a 70-piece orchestra.
(source, amazon.com)
sorry I haven't been around as long as you, to know that Judy collins was covering Joni Mitchells song. I'd heard Judy collins growing up, hadn't heard JM until that movie.
You need to get over yourself. How old are you? 80??? OMG.
I thought "TAINTED LOVE" would be on there, too! Or, "CARS" by Gary Newman.
Great dance songs!
Even "COLD GIN" by Kiss.
WOOH!
I think this is someone's Karaoke night songlist.
I love Joni Mitchell!
What a rift this Find has caused. Isn't music supposed to soothe the savage beast?
And the reason I hardly every comment (and this is not directed at everybody, just a few):
I can't stand the way some people talk to each other on here. Most of you probably don't know each other.... are strangers other than the daily FOUND conversations you have. And yet you think it is okay to have "holier than thou" (for lack of better description) attitudes toward each other. Some people simply cannot let others have their own opinion. Some people simply cannot pass up the opportunity to correct others. And some people simply can not comment without saying something, anything, negative... either about the FIND or somebody else's comment! Everybody has their day, and that's fine. But to those that this is a daily attitude for you, take it somewhere else. I hope I am not taking too much liberty when I say that we're tired of it!
Maybe I am just naive in thinking it's possible for civilized adults to put differences aside and get along. As I tell my first graders: Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody can have their own opinion. And finally, there are nice ways and not so nice ways to express yourself.
And I am sure that by saying this, I am opening myself up for attack. Fine. I'll just go back to being the recluse that I was, not commenting but enjoying the daily finds without commentary.
@ Nightingale - :) I'm glad somebody else agreed with me!
Yeah, Holly, and something by ABBA, too. (but no.. Dancing Queen is like, just way too overplayed.)
@Rebel in a fishbowl - - I'll have to check that out. Thanks.
The music video, in my opinion, also is pretty annoying. But if it's not Chris Isaak, I'll give it a chance. :)
Mona, reading is talking to you. Play nice, don't say anything even mildly negative about the Finds or others' comments. If you can't agree in a patronizing manner and compliment nicely everything you see and read then we don't want you. Oh, am I overstepping some boundary?
And I knew somebody wouldn't be able to resist a snarky comment. And no... I wasn't addressing Mona specifically.
Not saying anything even remotely negative wasn't what I was getting at. I do believe people should be free to state their opinions. But I also believe there are appropriate ways to do so. And when you attack somebody else's opinion with no bases of judgement other than it's just that, an opinion, that's when it's simply ridiculous. As far as I know, opinions are simply personal feelings or beliefs and there aren't right or wrong ones.
Perfect example: this song list.... a few people commented they liked the songs. Other's said they didn't. Fine. To each his own. But what I am saying are there are mature ways to go about discussing your tastes and opinions.
I recreated this playlist on myspace! Haha!
Oops -- I have Both Sides Now (Judy Collins of course) on my playlist, along with the Carpenters, Abba and some other golden oldies.
I can always plead 'Post-Modern irony'... but actually I like them.
But I also have Varese, Messiaen, Nancarrow, the Internationale and god knows what else. What's the point of having a playlist if it doesn't upset other people??
Grazie tanto al Signor Reading Too Much (leggendo troppo). As you good people know by now,
aut tace aut loquere meliora silentio,
which means, you all be nice and only say nice things or you say nothing, OK?
Here in Renaissance Italy we agree de old songs are de best. Vivaldi -- huh, nasty modern stuff.
Okay...I have to object. If we were always nice and always said nice things or didn't put anything down then well wouldn't that contradict reality. The reality is not everyone is going to have nice opinions. The reality is not everyone is going to agree with every comment posted. And as @I must has pointed out because we do not agree and sometimes are uncivil we learn things from each other. I'm not one to pick fights ALL of the time but I've had my share.
If you want to express your opinion don't be afraid to express it and don't back down simply because someone else criticizes it. Get a backbone...geesh!
@Winston: with all due respect, we create our reality and I think people are more willing to learn from civility than through butting heads.
The reality is this is a music playlist, not some moral controversy. Of course no one's going to agree on the best or worst songs ever. When it comes to music, why can't everyone's opinions be about what they like and not about what they don't care for? Using words like "puke", "yuck", and "shitty" to describe one's opinion about a playlist that they haven't even been subjected to listening to seems childish to me.
I constantly remind myself that children actually read this website, so maybe these offensive comments are from the mouths of babes. In that case, the wise words of my mother and Salvator Rosa are an appropriate lesson.
PS I love Chris Isaak!
Well your theory is nice but it isn't plausible. I am simply pointing out that even though everyone has a choice to be civil or not, not everyone is going to make the same choice...So realistically speaking, you can't expect everyone in the world; muchless, this site, to be civil simply because "we create our reality". If everyone acted the same way, thought the same way, then I disagree...you would have monotony and you would never learn anything from it. It's when people butt heads that ideas come together, dreams are made, or the truth rears its ugly (or pretty) head. People butt heads in civil ways...it's called debating. Using adjectives to express how we feel about something (even if those adjectives aren't nice) is just human nature.
Plus...how do you know they weren't subjected to it? People and their crazy ideas about the younger generations. The music listed is what I grew up listening to even though it came out long before I was born. I can say that for atleast 50 or more people my age.
I'll get off my "high horse" now.
I just want to point out for posterity that you can listen to this playlist on Found's blog. Here's a link:
http://whatsup.foundmagazine.com/?p=139
This is someone's Kar-a croakie list, totally . . . ironically I was going to add "Breakfast at Tiffany's" to my list, which I secretly keep on my blackberry . . . you can only let them think you stumbled upon a song that you ROCK
"She said I think I remember the film and as I recall, I think, we both kinda liked it. So I said, Well then, that's one thing we got."
