Eat Responsibly
FOUND by Terry in Springfield, Oregon
Found on a high school hallway floor. I wonder if it was a Health class assignment, or if someone was just doodling while hungry?
Clover in the lawn
This find looks really familiar. Maybe it's because I've been eating responsibly lately. I just made a squash and sunchoke and leek soup today -- all grown from my dad's garden, organic. Yumm!

Is that some kind of cat creature eating the ramen?

I love that this was found in a high school. I didn't eat ramen until college. Maybe it's a warning for graduating seniors.

funny though. :)

Wait...ramen is BAD for you? I know it's not good for you, but "bad" is an overstatment. It's neutral. My grandma always used to cut mine up with kitchen scissors and put ice cubes in it. Now I just eat it fast and hot and burn my mouth. I will admit that I do only eat the Top Ramen brand...the extra four cents is really worth it.

Flargy, cowering in terror

MSG is the devil. Especially for those of us prone to neurological nonsense.

However, the Minneapolis-based crusty punk band Destroy wrote a great song in the early nineties called "Ode to Ramen." The lyrics, in their entirety, are:

Five for a dollar!
Cooks in three minutes!
Tastes great!
Ode to Ramen! Ode to Ramen! Ode to Ramen!

It reminds me of Max from Where the Wild Things Are (or maybe one of the Wild Things).

We don't get the kind in a cup, but with the package kind, my kid likes to lightly wet the square of noodles with water, let it sit for a minute to get a little soft, sprinkle with some of the powder, and munch.

I sincerely hope this is not the work of a high school student.

Maybe a younger sibling drew this for their high school age older sib, who tends to eat way too much ramen for lunch.

Ugh! Corn and peas in ramen? Ramen should be paired only with meat, fish cake, eggs, leafy greens, or things that can easily be picked up by chopsticks. Peas and corn is just like the nasty stuff that is thrown into cup noodles to please the white man.
BTW, could that possibly be a very messed up Naruto?

Looks like someone was bored during Health and Hygiene, or poss Biology class. Teacher may have been ranting about nutrition and held up Ramen as a bad example. I used to do this, doodle rebellious things that contradicted what I was hearing. If you remember to look up every few seconds, like you're really paying attention, they don't know you're not taking notes. As Maya Angelou puts it so well: spread a handful of attention over your face and tune out the adults.

I was unaware Ramen Noodles were bad for you. I survived off of them for two years when I was broke. Aside from the high levels of carbohydrates and sodium, they are an extremely versatile and quick food. They can be eaten on then go and their cheap too. Yay for Ramen!

Cute cute cute! Is Ramen bad for you? That kid is eating Ramen? I would have thought he's eating Halloween candy. Somebody actually gave my kid a piece of sushi while trick-or-treating. That's what they were giving out... sushi. And the word "tasty" has always been really funny to me.

brain problem situation in in my head
I love ramen. I do think they are kinda bad for you... the carbs and MSG, plus they are high in fat, as they are fried before they are packaged. It doesn't stop me from making this delicious ramen salad, which I will pass on for everyone to enjoy:

Asian Slaw

One prepackaged bag veggies for slaw, broccoli slaw or cabbage shredded.
Sunflower seeds, a handful or so. Or maybe almonds if you have them.

3/4 cup salad oil
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup vinegar (white works, but I like rice wine for this salad)
flavor pak from ramen

Crunch up the raw ramen into bite size-ish chunks. Toss with veggies. Add some cucumber if you want. Snow peas are good, too.

Wisk together the oil, vinegar, sugar, and ramen mix. Add some grated ginger if you've got it. Maybe a little sesame oil, too.

Pour the dressing over the ramen and cabbage/broccoli slaw and veggies. Throw in some sunflower seeds. Toss to coat. Put in the 'fridge for about 4 hours or so, so the ramen soaks up some of the dressing.

Good stuff.

wendy in the office of the food police
The main problem with Ramen is the high amount of MSG. MSG is a neurotransmitter (hence Flargy's comment) and its main function in food is to trick your brain into thinking there is more protein in the food than there really is. Also, your body changes excess glutamate to GABA which may be addictive. It is calming and affects the same receptors in the brain as valium. That may explain why so many of you love Ramen! I had never heard of it until I was in my 30's. I ate pancakes out of a wok in my dorm room when I ran out of money. Equally as nutritionally poor, but no MSG!

jennie in the garden of oblivion(where we grow sunchokes)
sunchokes, for what it is worth, are the edible root of a plant commonly called Jerusalem artichoke. It is actually a sunflower root and can be sauteed, steamed, or stir fried. Tastes kind of like a nutty potato, if that makes sense. I beseech you all to go out and try this delicious and somewhat freaky vegetable. End of rant.

Hi Tori.... it was for real sushi ..California roll. And it wasn't wrapped in plastic or anything. All us parents waited at the end of the driveway while the kids knocked on the door. We saw a nice looking lady handing out what we thought was candy. When the kids came back to us, my son said " We got sushi. " Before that he didn't even know what sushi is (very picky eater ). We thought it was a joke but sure enough the kids all held out a piece of unwrapped California roll. For real. Other kids and parents were standing on the street talking about it too.

Thanks explaining about sunchokes, Jennie. Did you grow some? I had written something about it earlier yesterday, but then my internet connection failed and when I rebooted I had lost it. At that moment I was heading out to a big adventure, so I didn't have time to recreate what I had written.

I didn't know what they were until my dad grew some this summer.

I do want to encourage you guys to try this very nutritious root and enjoy the beautiful flowers. If you save the root, you can plant it next year and a new plant will grow. Also the name comes from the Italian for "sun follower" and has nothing to do with Jerusalem. They are cultivated more in Europe than in the US, where they became known as a poor man's food during WWII, being one of the only foods available in some areas during wartime. They are super-nutritious. I learned all of this and more when I googled "sunchoke." You can too! Eat responsibly!
