Russian Portrait
FOUND by MadtKA in Moskwa, Russia
I found this portrait (along with a few others) flying down a sidewalk.
The Captain in Tenille
darn- looks like someone loved this portrait, and had it hanging on their wall... probably lost them during a move or something. Bummer.

It reminds me of Jack Dawson's sketches on Titanic.

Naturally this picture was flying because I'm getting an early aviation pioneer vibe from the image.

Wow, that portrait is beautiful. She looks so Russian, especially the coat, and I love the idea of her flying down the street - sort of how Russia's place is the world is rapidly ascending again

Clover, back in the USSR
This looks like just the type of thing that would be found blowing around in the wind in Russia. It's hard to imagine finding anything like this in the US.

Once again, it appears as if drawing is dominating in 2008.

Chrome Toaster in trouble for still being up and online. Vacation's over, after all.
It's interesting to me that the subject's face looks aged, mature, but the hair, flopping out from under the head-band style ear warmer, looks very youthful and boyish.

I wonder if the person who submitted this submitted any of the others that were also flying down the street.

The person in the drawing looks like my exboyfriend.

It reminds me of a potrait of a young boy my husband and I found in the trash in the Fisherman's Wharf area in San Francisco. It had obviously been freshly done and seemed sad that someone would throw it away. We left it there because we had too many other things to lug around.

Funny, the face doesn't say "boyish" to me, it says "middle-aged woman." Eyelids as well as expression. Tired, and maybe having a bad day or just not feeling very well. Maybe they didn't enjoy sitting for the portrait.

Clover, you beat me to it, i was gonna say that. I hope it was lost, rather than discarded. Or, i hope it was discarded on purpose, so that it might find someone who appreciates it. Kind of like an art gallery of the wind.

This is beautiful. It doesn't matter what the person in the portrait is like, it matters about the artist. I think that he (I think the artist was male) was a street artist, and did this for a woman. Either that or he was a street artist, and while he had no customers, he just drew whatever came into his head, or whatever passed him by. I feel like there's such a story behind this. It's a shame he lost it in the wind. Do you think he misses his drawings, his little ejection of creativity? Do you think he goes looking for them?

I *love* this picture! I think the artist would be thrilled to know his art has been found and is being shared around the world.

I dunno… this cat looks like a dude to me and a kid-toucher to boot.

Add a pair of those thick tinted child molester glasses and grease up the hair a little bit... Yup. Kid-toucher. No doubt.

Nobody talk or accept candy or rides from the Russian portrait.

I find the eyes unbearably haunting. Those are eyes that have seen a lot in their lifetime, and tell a story in themselves.

I would also like to see the other portraits. I envision a starving artist dropping his portfolio, and all of his years of work escaping, sweep away from his grasp by a cold winter wind full of despair and loss.

I'll settle this: it's Andy Milonakis. But seriously, it's a very well-done portrait.

Holly in side today, toooo cold out to go anywhere!
Very nicely done, great pencil shading, it's hard to find a realism sketch. Looks like a real, hard-working, Russian woman with 5 kids, and a husband who stays home and drinks Vodka and eats salami and cabbage all day.
I'm not being insultive, just know alot of Russians and that's the emotion I felt when I saw the image.
I love 'her' lips.

The tape marks are interesting. Most artists would not tape over the sketch. I am sorry the artist lost his/her portfolio in the wind!

The subject of this sketch does have a world weary expression. I can't imagine her (I think it is a woman) posing for a portrait with that sort of drained, haunted expression. Like Rotuma, I think this was a sketch of a random individual that the artist did to pass the time.

A lot of thoughts come to my mind with this found.
1. I'm so sad for whoever lost this.
2. Is that Rocky Balboa
3. Maybe there are tape marks because it is actually a wanted poster.
4. Is that a man or a woman.

I could go on and on.

i think the tape and tack-holes in the corners are the most interesting part of this find... somebody obviously loved this portrait if they kept reattaching it to their wall with tape and tacks. But at the same time, its very disrespectful to a peice of art to tape OVER the sketch like that...
Only a man would do that. :)
I think that this is an adored portrait of a middle-aged women, owned by a man too poor to frame it. Maybe he lost it on the move from one residence to another... because this man often moves. He keeps reattaching his artwork, up and down, to different walls.

Stuck: Wanted poster! Maybe it was a book of forensic sketches that were lost! That would explain the tape marks. Maybe this is a composite sketch for a wanted or unidentified individual.

Where I live, there's a lot of snatch-and-run robbery of anything people can get their paws on. If they steal a case, portfolio or whatever and don't like the contents, they just scatter them to the wind. Maybe this artist was robbed.

I see a lot of women with their shortish hair held up and back by those stretchy headband/turban things, especially on bad hair days or when they need their roots done. Going by the facial structure and eyes, as well as the full lips, I'd definitely say female.

people keep talking about who the portrait is, whether its a man or a woman, sad or needing his/her roots done. My feeling about pieces of art is that you can tell infinitely more about the artist, than the subject. We know nothing, really, about this subject. We know about the artists rendering of the subject. The details give us information about what the artist chose to put detail into, not about what the subject thought was important about his/her presentation. i'm just sayin...

What a great emotive portrait. I love how the eyes are not symmetrical...not a great economy of line..but very expressive shapes and contours...Will you share the other portraits you found?

If that is a portrait of the male species, Which I doubt, but as I said before...the artist sketched a damned divine image!

However, it's the 'lips' that make the picture for me! And I'm NOT gay!! I find that one feature very alluring....kinda like...."He's got lips that I could spend the day with!!"
True or not???

Great find!!

Flargy in the Red Army
My sister had a portrait of herself drawn by a street artist in Russia about 20 years ago. It was done in a style similar to this, and it hangs on the wall in my mom's kitchen to this day.

Mona, you're just trying to throw everyone off your trail with this "you can tell infinitely more about the artist, than the subject" crap. I can't say I blame you though. It must get pretty tiresome, being eternally scrutinized by all these assholes trying to figure out what the hell your smile means.

I keep looking for CW in this pic and not seeing him. Mr Walken always reminded me more of a reptile--I keep expecting to see him lick his own eyeballs! However this is not to say he isn't a great actor, because he is. God's gift to the "evil henchman/cold-calculating-killer" category.

Street artist (quick/slick technique) but a very acute observer (mouth/eyes -- the eyes are amazing).
Like a Lucien Freud portrait -- you feel you know the sitter and his/her state of mind with almost embarrassing intimacy even though you aren't told basic things like name or occupation or even gender.
It was obviously treasured (pinned/taped to a door or wall). As it was found blowing down the street I wonder if the owner(s) had been evicted from their apartment and the landlords had cleared these pictures out with the rubbish? Sad thought.

Babushka is Russian for Grandmother, I believe. (possibly Grandfather, but I think GMa is correct. if not, someone will be along shortly to call me names and offer their own professional opinion.)

'Babooshka' is also the first track on Kate Bush's 1980 LP 'Never For Ever' which I haven't listened to or thought of in 25 years until now.

Great song, very hypnotic, as hers always were.

It's not about a grandmother, although that is indeed what Babushka means. (Grandfather is 'dedushka'.)
