What to Expect November 17, 2006 |
Not Necessarily in... December 01, 2002 |
We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
i wish somebody drew something cool like that for meeeeee....
The Hoodie girl from American Apparel loves you too, Lisandra.
So sorry to be bringing that up again, I couldn't help it. :)
When I was a child and bored at the symphony, I kept myself entertained by imagining scenes of fairies and other magical creatures frolicking in the forest, scenes inspired by the music. Maybe that's what this person was doing.
I like the fact that Lucifer is covering up one nipple.
Lysandra, thou hast given rhymes,
and interchanged love-tokens with my child:
thou hast by moonlight at her window sung,
with feigning voice verses of feigning love,
and stolen the impression of her fantasy
with bracelets of thy hair, rings, gawds, conceits, Knacks, trifles, nosegays, sweetmeats, messengers of strong prevailment in unharden'd youth: with cunning hast thou filch'd my daughter's heart!
and Dave, I thought he was tweaking it ;)
Oh, it's 'Ms.Dev' herself! ERM... sorry, didn't mean to hurt anyone.
I've just been feeling so devilish lately!
Or, I guess it could maybe be 'CUPID' 'cause why would a guy/girl write 'I love you' with a devil??
Unless....oh never mind!
Not a devil, not a cupid. Just a very young satyr, like his older cousin, Pan.
Not that I'd care for a declaration of love from a satyr of any age...it would last only until push came to shove, if you'll forgive the Elisabethan pun.
Martina, I like your style.
Dare we hope that the girl's name is actually Sandra and she has taken to calling herself "Lysandra"? I would hate to go through life burdened with that moniker, but then parents sometimes use their children as blank slates to prove points on. We should all have the right of veto on our first name at about age 25.
Thus kind of reminds me of Shakespeare's Misummer Night Dream, Lysander was a character in it. This could be the female version. Plus there is all kinds of fairies and enchanted stuff in the play as well. But none the less, I really like this find.
It's been a tough week. Thank God tomorrow's satyrday.
I bet Lisandra's a babe, plays the flute, really knows how to pucker. I bet Mr Post-it sits in the auditorium, watches her lips, gets all hotted up. I know I would.
LOL @ Satyrday.
I like the name Lysandra.
I can't tell if the creature is tweaking it's nip nip or putting it's hand over it's heart. Hmmm.
Orinoco, you're right, comme toujours. There's a little satyr (called 'Satirino') in Cavalli's opera La Calisto -- looked just like this -- and that's the first thing I thought of.
No harm in 'Lisandra' as a name (except what does it mean? 'Man lily'?). Plenty of things she can shorten it to if she's embarrassed by it. I think it's poetic!
Farmer: Pan pipes perhaps? ;-)
Or maybe she's a hunky contrabassoonist.
Martina, what is that quote? Beautiful.
Lysandra (in Greek Λυσανδρα; lived 3rd century BC) was daughter of Ptolemy I Soter and Eurydice, the daughter of Antipater. She was married first to Alexander, the son of Cassander, king of Macedonia, and after his death to Agathocles, the son of Lysimachus.
I'd say that the artist "chickened" out; forgot the programme and is now stalking Lisandra...
Lisandra's a cool name. Personally, I'd be pissed if my parents named be something as boring as Sandra. Or maybe my standards are higher because I have an unusual (but not sucky) name. :/
In any case, the satyr is awesome. I wish people would draw me satyrs... Maybe I should consider a name change...
It's playing air guitar.
The little guy is a faun.
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faun
"However, fauns and satyrs were originally quite different creatures. Both have horns and both resemble goats below the waist, humans above; but originally satyrs had human feet, fauns goatlike hooves."
Somewhere along the line the artist confused fauns, satyrs and unicorns. That certainly isn't a goat's tail...looks more like a lion's.
Griffon, anyone? LOL
I think little love notes like this are the best expression of love. :)
orinoco, surely your parents weren't guilty of using you as a blank slate on which to prove a point? (j/k, couldn't help thinking of that, with a name like orinoco womble -- here on found we get to use ourselves as blank slates for our names, proving points if we want, and it's so much fun!)
i know more than one person who has taken the veto privilege on a given moniker at the age of 25. so many of my friends have legally changed their first or last names, but usually it's in rejection of the more common one, to something odd and difficult to spell or pronounce. very confusing. i guess maybe that says something about my friends and relatives?
and by the way, my name was inspired by a childhood friend who really was named Clover.. :) and i always wished it were my own name. she was cute and had braids and freckles, and i didn't think her name odd at all. i wanted to name my daughter Clover, but one of my friends said, "That sounds like a cow." so we named our daughter after another wildflower/weed, a very common girl's name.
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Tumnus& Tumnus</a>, the faun from <i>The Chronicles of Narnia</i>? I'm not sure if fauns have forked tails though.
Y'know, because fauns are real and all.
:)
Hmmm, a nipple pinching goat-boy with tentacles for arms. What exactly is the message here? I love you so much I want to pinch my own nips....I think Lisandra can do better.
Lisandra would be an interesting name to have. At least with that name, your claim to fame would not be the number of decades your name has at the top of the "most popular" list.
i think the post it note was left by one of the actors/actresses and Lisandra is in the audience.
i also think the little fawn/she devil is def playing air guitar
Why is it that whenever I try to educate myself online, I always seem to end up reading something dirty?
From Wikipedia: "In Greek mythology, satyrs... they are often associated with sex drive and vase-painters often portrayed them with uncontrollable erections."
I'm glad this lil' fella's keeping himself in check... unless he's not really a satyr at all... maybe the devilish theme continues...
"I’ve got little devil horns, and a little Goatee, little devil eyes to help a little devil see, little cloven hoofs that make it kinda hard to ski... I’m Satan, Woo Hoo!"
The Faun is getting down with his bad little self.
(Baby Basil: Did you ever read the Chronicles of Narnia? The Faun in that had a lion's tail.)
James, that tail is not forked, it is spooned.
The first thing I thought of was Puck from Midsummer Night's Dream...
The first thing I thought of was randy old Pan from Jitterbug Perfume... And then <a href="http://foundmagazine.com/find/1880" Boy</a>, for some reason.
I like this find!
I have little knowledge of such creatures, but to me she looks like a pretty little wood nymph and the hooves and tail make me think that the artist considers her a sexy she devil.
<a href="http://cabinetofanomalies.blogspot.com/& Finder?</a>
Wow, you guys are just full of information. Thanks for the edu.
This little faun is putting his hand over his heart and declairing his undying love for the beautiful water sprite Lisandra.
Martina, very nice use of quoting Shakespeare wih a twist! It seems this little dryad has filched someone's heart.
PS, it's got to be a faun, statyrs were known to be licentious and lewd (and they had human feet and forked tales) while this little guy is obviously sinsere in his love for the beautiful Lisandra.
I wish someone would write something like that for me... Even if he did turn out to be a lute-playing-stalker-boy...
@Martina- What is that from? It's wonderful!
Actually Sandra is short for Alexandra (as is also Lisandra?), so she could be named after a Queen of England or else Tsarina of Russia. And they probably took their name from Alexander the Great in the first place.
Lysander, on the other hand, means 'wolf man', I believe.
Mona, thanks for that info. Of course I knew that already ;-)
Hmm, I don't remember that being in A Midsummer Night's Dream... I obviously wasn't paying as much attention as I thought I was...
Oh, and does anyone else have the 'Where is Jenny now?' banner ad at the top?
Those girls look so much like the girls I went to high school with that it's spooky.
The dude from Narnia loves this chick! Awesome!
Hey party people, we've added some html tags to the comments section! You asked and we stepped it up. No more pasted long urls in here, woo! Use the directions above the text box, and make sure to close your tags, ok? More improvements to the site on their way. Good times!
I'm stealing this to use for my Valentine cards. Everyone is going to get a little lewd and licentious satyr from me...and some heartshaped red hot candies too!
and my real name is Therese! Isn't that awful?
Thanks Jason!!!
I am feeling <b>bold</b>, <i>italia</i>.
<b>LOOK!</b> It's the devil.
Oh, no, wait, that's just the American Apparel hoodie girl. I <i>must</i> get me one of them hoodies and fulfill my dream of looking like an under age prostitute who can spell 'palindrome' backwards like nobody's business.
Hey, if you're going to have a stalker he might as well play a cool instrument like a lute.
In college my roommate had a guy who used to sit outside our room and play ballads he had composed for her on a ratty out-of-tune guitar... God if we could have traded him for a lute player satyr we would have. In a heartbeat.
Christ, even a non-lute playing satyr… a centaur on bongos… Anything!
Spam protection: What is the most populous city in the US?
So I googled it and google came back with New York, but the site wouldn't accept it in any form. WTF?!
Oh and she just reminded me that he used to leave love notes for her too, on post-its and index cards.
The best was his "word-a-day" method: "I" one day, "Love" the next, "You" on the third, "More" on the fourth, and so on.
Jonathan, of <i>course </i> i knew you knew that. And you know that i know that you know that. pfft....
Clover: Wow – you went to the symphony as a child? My folks never took me to the symphony. We went to the drive-in, with paper grocery bags full of home-popped popcorn.
Also, judging by the artwork on the finder’s page, it almost looks like Jon might have drawn this himself. Not saying he did, just that it looks right up his alley.
And, final comment (maybe) – those American Apparel girls look like underage fashion “slaves” abducted in the middle of the night, held hostage in a cheap flat, and forced to do “fashion/porno” shots. Let’s rescue them!
Awww I <b>LOVE</b> this!!! It made me smile on a relly crappy day that I am soooo sick :(
*really
My brain turns off when im sick lol
has anyone else checked out finderjohn's artwork, and his greeting card site, and been disappointed in the <i>lack</i> of edginess of the greeting cards?
hugs, Utah chick. Hope you feel better. I totally know what you mean about your brain turning off. Mine is just turning back on after a week long cold.
<b>WHAT THE HECK IS THE ANSWER TO THE MOST POPULOUS CITY IN THE UNITED STATES???????</b>
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Uni
Most populous cities in the US: It's NYC damn it!
"Text" should read: "Wikipedia"...
I would think he would have his hand over his heart,in an avowal of love, but unless his heart is on the right side, that can't be the case. Maybe he's doing the "Saturday Night Fever" dance. Move over John Travolta!
I've tried "New York", "New York City" and "NewYork", but not NYC. i'll try that, next time. Just a note, James.. i thought the consensus was that we wanted <b>LESS</b> US-centric questions, not more.
Woops! Sorry that populous city thing didn't work... looks like it's gonna be tougher math questions. Math is international!
Nadine, the style of this little Post-it is <B>nothing</b> like the style of the artwork on those blogs.
But what, exactly, is a "blind contour"? does the artist make the drawing blindfolded? if so, that's pretty freakin' impressive.
The Faun's nipple is still visible. Since his eyes are closed, I was wondering if he's actually being depicted lying down, asleep. (and dreaming of his beloved, of course.)
I have yet to see this mysterious Hoodie girl. I see this horribly skin tight turquoise '80's dress, or that cheerleader girl. A few days ago there was an ad for men's underwear.. it was extremely disturbing.
Tess, I love your valentine idea.. and Tori, I think I went to high school with most of those chicks, too! creepy. Horrible hairstyles. what was everyone thinking??
And finally, Jason, you <B>ROCK!!!</b> Thanks for the new bells and whistles. Is there <I>really</i> a spam Q that requires the most populous state in the US?
aww, how cute!
Spam protection: 28 times 15 is what?
Aww, man. i had to get out my calculator. interesting that the answer is 420. SOMEONE had something on their minds when they came up with that question. hahaha.
I can't believe no-one has mentioned Mr Tumnus! Mr Tumnus, the one who lives in Narnia, and who almost rats Lucy out but pays the ultimate price by being turned to stone. So beautifully portrayed by the lovely James McElroy. Hmmmmm, James McElroy ....
Cabbage, James did. at 7:57. :)
Nadine, the American Apparel girls are safe. Here's the story:
<a href="http://www.theonion.com/content/news/14_ Onion</a>
I did, Cabbage!!
I don't like this or the other days' devilish find, but I wanted to comment to see the spam protection question - LOL ! (Yey, stick with the word questions)
I am so stupid. How are youse guys making bold and pretty italics and colorful lettering? Do I need to get a teenager in here to help me out?
Has anybody said yet this is from a girl to a girl? Looks like girly writing to me.
You are joking about the math aren't you Jason?
OhmyGod, I got a division problem.
Captain, a blind contour drawing is one where the artist doesn't look at his paper as he draws, he only looks at the subject.
I once knew a boy from Mexico named Lisandro, so Lisandra would be the feminine version. Beautiful name.
Sweet Find, Jon MacNair!
super cute!
This reminds me of the satyr cartoons in Playboy magazine in the 1960s.
<a href="http://www.animationarchive.org/2006/02/ Satyr Cartoon</a>
JodaBabes, on a Greek holiday my ex bought a little bronze statuette of one of those fellas (Priapos) and kept it on her dressing table for hanging her rings on. No kidding!
@A Ghost in the L&F, that's amazing. I have a book of Rude Cartoons About Animals From Playboy and there are sevral satyr ones by that guy Eldon Dedini, but I hadn't known his name before.
Whooo! Happy dreams!
(so.. I guess priapism and Priapos have the same word origin? eeeeep!)
Vill in, see the instructions just above the comment box. Insert your text where they've put the word "text" between the opening and closing brackets. Just don't forget to close your commands.
(<u>just wondering</u>)
OK, so underlining doesn't work. But Villin, you can see from my failed code what your commands will look like.
Who IS that girl in your bed? ;)
Reminds me of Dave Chappelle,
"Doottilly......doottilly....doottilly..do
Clover, Wombles name themselves when they come of age. You pick your name out of the atlas...except Bungo Womble, of course, who just closed his eyes and came out with "Bungo!" But then, it fits...
Tess, Thérèse is a beautiful name. St. Thérèse is the greatest saint of modern times, even though she herself would never believe it...which may be why.
There is a similar name to Lisandra in Spanish, "Lisardo." No, it does not mean "lizard." Yes, it gives English-speakers severe giggles.
Haha, my math problem was very confusing, so I went to yesterday and commented with an easy captcha thing which let me in to today.
No, Lisandra, it's not worth it...love is hard to find, but it's not worth a deal with the devil!
does anyone remember Tay Lizardo in the Moon Solaris? My favorite Finder's name. EVER.
oh... my comments got deleted because of rampant html havoc :(
No! they didn't! They wandered up into Lisandra's rectangle. Oh that out-of-control html is very very scary. I hope everyone has a sense of humor, especially John MacNair, who is probably wondering what the heck is going on.. Kuh-razee!
guys! these needs to be on a t-shirt! i would buy it in a second, only if it was yellow with red text, of course.
-scott
www.thelovelyroad.com
I go to that art school and I don't know any Lisandra, just and Alissandra. Could be a University of Baltimore student.
Scott, If I understand the Found t-shirt shop correctly, you can save, then upload just about any image to put on a t-shirt. You might clarify that with the good folks running the t-shirt site, though, because I haven't gotten one myself yet. I agree that this Find NEEDS to be on a T-Shirt! (and yellow tees are available.)
It appears that they've removed the direct link from this main page, but it's under the "extras" link up there in the upper left of the page. Or C&P this URL-- http://130584.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/
*Jason: is my understanding of that site correct? Can we save a Find of the Day to our computer, then upload it to the T-shirt shop? (copyright issues?) Thanks!!
Oh, and Scott, what a gorgeous site! (do you have the Found Polaroid book? something you would probably appreciate.)
