Don't Tread on Me

in Chicago, Illinois
We found this in a used book we bought from Powell's Books on 57th Street in Hyde Park about five years ago. It's had a place of honor on our fridge ever since. Our guess is that the folks in the picture are participating in some wacky '70s school talent show, or it's a teacher using a student to demonstrate the crushing effects of drug abuse (it's definitely some sort of abuse). In any case, the Jolly Roger just brings it all together.

It is. That's great, though.
That's one of the greatest things I've ever seen. I especially like her striped socks....
The first thing that popped into my head was one of those hypnotism entertainment shows. I remember seeing such a thing at my high school, where they'd make kids do goofy stuff like perform like Mick Jagger.

This photo contains many mysteries. Why does the microphone cable disappear under the victim's left hip? If she knew she'd wind up sleeping on stage that day, why did she wear a dress? What is disco Dan doing with his foot on her waist?
In the end, I think Amy L is right on. This has got to be stage hypnosis.
As for the Jolly Roger, I think the banner might refer to their school mascot: Go Pirates!!

Looks like a scene from a high school production of "Bye, Bye Birdie" to me. Not sure about the Jolly Roger, though.
Beck is way shorter.
