Yui's Career Choice
FOUND by Kay in Elsewhere
While helping clean the art room at my school, I came across a box of postcards someone had donated. I figured there must have been at least a hundred, half of them written in other languages, and postmarked from all over the world. So I did what any finder would do: shoved the stack in my bag and continued sorting through the toilet paper tubes and yogurt containers. This one is one of my favorites.

Two days in a row we have finds with good penmanship. Good trend!

The Captain in Tenille
I really want to know what that building looks like. How old is this postcard? Is that particular building still standing? a quick google image search resulted in a very boring (to me, anyway) looking building.

That is, indeed, very lovely penmanship.

Wow. That looks like my penmanship. No joke.

I googled the building, too. The Captain's right... very boring. There IS however some insane eye candy.

Here's a bit of info on the building:

The boring building must have motivated the hysterically over-compensating postcard blurb...gotta do something to make it interesting! For an "internationally recognised" college--I've never heard of it. But then I don't take Engineering and Foundry Weekly, either.

What kind of name do you suppose Yui is?

When I was young, I had two pen pals, both male: a Chinese guy and a guy from Saudi Arabia. They both had the most beautiful handwriting I've ever seen. (very similar to each other- and somewhat similar to this writing, though smaller and tighter.)

Happy Weekend, everyone.

I disagree with your statement you did what any finder would do and took the postcards. The students could have made some pretty cool art projects out of them I bet.
This finder would never have taken them.

Guess there are no Modernism fans out there yet? I think it is a fabulous building!

The postcard is so weird. Who said she had to major in something b/c she likes the building?

subtle humor, marie. note the capital letters, implying perhaps a title for the postcard.
and, mom, listen to ego (not your own).
perhaps, found commenters, we should preface our words with explanations for what follows, or even better, explain the meaning at the end of the submission, like this: What I Meant By What I Said.... sort of like the ubiquitous Chicken Soup crap.
yeesh, people. this is specifically why i refrained from posting for so long, but you've sucked me in, you've sucked me in.

Mom in Whitmore Lake, the finder definitely noted that they were CLEANING OUT the art room, so how do we know to what extent that would be? perhaps the post cards were to be discarded.

This is lovely handwriting. I wish mine looked like that.

I think that the Finder is perfectly right in taking the postcards- they were for anyone to take, weren't they? Besides, FOUND is an art project, or sorts. I think wading through a bunch of old postcards would be really fun.

orinoco womble in wimbledon burrow
I see the postcard was never actually posted...no stamp, no postmark. Did she change her mind, or just lose it? Or is it just a "note to self"? If that is the most beautiful building on campus, the others must be boxes with roofs on. Which after all is all a building is...I much prefer a burrow.

But then I think Le Courvoisier (sp?) sacrificed too much form to function...his monastery is frightful IMHO.

Great! A vebal Spam!
+ February 23, 2008 10:47 AM +
orinoco again in same place
By which I mean, of course "did she just lose the card"--not her mind!
+ February 23, 2008 10:48 AM +
Miigan, unfortunately not in the place she wants to be
I think building is actually pretty cool, especially one of the shots of the inside.
I love old postcards, especially ones with writing. I wonder who Yui was writing to? Why didn't she send the card? Did she rewrite the card and send the second one, and did it have a different picture, or did she just lose this one?

Lovely!

OMG, I can totally agree with Yui, I'm taking an engineering graphics class (auto-cad) class right now. The auto-cad part I've got, its the board drafting that I'm in over my head. I'm thinking about dropping it. Engineering is so boring, but I'm married to a really interesting engineer.

Wombly person in Wimbledon (?), boxes with roofs on! Hardly! Oh my heart aches now. A building is much more than just a shelter, it’s an expression of … well, it depends.
From the tiny snippets of images I’ve seen of the engineering building, it’s not all that bad. Personally I think Gothic, Greek, or Modern styles are best for institutional buildings. I wonder why Yui found it so appealing.

PS I’m not a huge fan of Le Corbusier either.

Jonathan in ennui
rava, thanks for the link.
Marie in C-ville, I agree! (assuming that the pc is of the futuristic 1948 building, not the old one that's about to be knocked down.) Much more inspiring than your average red brick or stone mock-gothic university building.

My first thought was that this was part of some project where you were asked to submit a postcard with a comment on it. Hence no stamp or address or personalised message.

Might even have been for Yui's English class -- enlightened teacher trying to get students to think for themselves in a new language. Who knows. Wonder if some of the other postcards would confirm this.
+ February 23, 2008 11:57 AM +

I think Yui means that since she is not interested in Mechanical Engineering, she will not be able to take classes in the building she likes the most on campus.

Lars, your suggestion that we preface or complete our comments with concise explanations immediately reminded me of this find:

All I see is "recognized"! Down under, we spell it recognised. All our z's are s's - is that the correct use for the apostrophes? God, it's too early on a sunday morning for this grammatical dilemma. If you want to see some cool buildings check out Wellington Airport's new "rocks" - they rock.
+ February 23, 2008 03:29 PM +
Mother knows best in apron
This wasn't found, it's stolen. The intro. clearly says, "while helping clean the art room...I came across a box of postcards somebody had donated". Not, as "tired" would have us believe, cleaning out the room. It's the same as if I was helping you clean up after a party at your house, and I came across a ring I liked. It would seem that the majority of you would feel just fine dropping it in your pocket. The fact that they were donated makes the crime worst. Like stealing the change tub off the counter at the store for Jerry's Kids.

LARS... talk about inflated egos!

No offense, but I had not even read your comment with the "capital letters" until now, when I was trying to figure out what the hell you were trying to tell me/teach me.

Believe it or not, my comment had nothing to do with you or your comment. Sorry.
+ February 23, 2008 04:01 PM +
Apropos of noth in g, but Mother made me think of it
At the gas station on the corner, there's a donation jar "supposedly" for the Susan G Komen breast cancer fund. The store is run by people whose first language is other than English, and the sign on the donation jar says "Susen G Beast cancel Award"

I've always kind of suspected them of doing that intentionally, so that they can just take the money and have an "out" in the excuse that they never claimed that the money would go to breast cander awareness...

what's done is done. It really doesn't matter at this point, does it? I don't imagine anyone here will be called upon to testify in this landmark case of grand larceny of postcards.

The Finder says "my school" Does she GO to the school? Run the school? Teach at the school? Did she Found the school? We don't know.
+ February 23, 2008 04:39 PM +
Poor Baby Dollar in limbo
I like the way the first sentence and the second really don't seem to be connected. This is a beautiful building. But I don't want to learn what they teach in there. I didn't assume because Yui liked the building she wanted to be an engineer.
If this was not a FIND you'd have nothing to bitch about today mom.
+ February 23, 2008 05:01 PM +
Annoyed in a box
"It wasn't found, it was stolen!" Oh wah, wah, wah. I'm sure the school is all up in arms about the case of the missing postcards. Would you have a problem, Mother, if the finder had taken the old yogurt containers and toilet paper tubes?

Actually, from now on, let's leave all Finds where they are just in case someone left them there on purpose. Silly us for thinking this whole Found stuff was fun.

Shame on us.

Has anyone noticed the magnify feature at the top. That wasn't there before was it?
+ February 23, 2008 09:45 PM +
sick with the flu in bed, not working on final projects
I'm going to assume it was a college art room... if the student graduated and left the postcards behind, or even no matter how Yui donated them, it's a donation to an art program. Meaning anyone can use them however they want. Clearly, they weren't being used, so why does it matter to the moms that she "stole" them. It's not like she snatched them from your childrens' hands.

And legend, it's sometimes there and sometimes not, depending on the find.

Clover, up to her neck in the file cabinets at school
It is a shame how many things are thrown away in schools. When teachers retire or move to another building or classroom, they leave their junk and good stuff behind. The new teachers don't care about it. Piles and piles of stuff goes out the door in large plastic garbage sacks with the janitor. It's perfectly fine that Kay took the postcards home. Better than the alternative.

I still wish I could see the rest of the postcards. What other languages? I am so curious.

I went to the University of Missouri-Rolla for my undergrad and the Mechanical Engineering building was definitely NOT the most beautiful building on campus. I think she's confused.

Jason in Tampa
I can't help but wonder if this was her subtle way of telling her parents that their dreams of her becoming a mechanical engineer are officially over. As long as she was bearing her soul, she followed up this card with the equally subtle:

"I think this man is the most handsome in the university. I am not interested in men."
