Mohawk Windmill
FOUND by Emily in Southern Pines, North Carolina
I found this photocopy stapled to a bench at my local community college. I really like the second astronaut at the top- he just looks so optimistic.

is this the evolution of lego man?
"no rest for the obsessed", huh? obviously not if you can draw this many of them, all with different personalities!

This hot punk band from New Zealand, "Mohawk Windmill", is composed entirely of Lego astronauts. Their new album is entitled "Shoot for the Moon: Adventures."

They hate wasted space.

I'd listen to them.

Artist - Lightning Bolt
Track 9 - Mohawk Windmill

To me this looks like someone tried to copy the album's cover art, or maybe it's a rough draft...?

Had a friend who would spend about half an hour drawing a house and then send his little doodles in to destroy it. He would sit and make Star Wars noises with his mouth. The drawings were so detailed and so realistic that when he was done it was still art. Coolest thing ever. I wanted to be him. I was in fifth grade. I can't quite get the "pistow!" noise right...

i noticed that this is drawn on graph paper. in class, when i'm really bored, i tend to flip to the back of my binder where i keep my graph paper and put myself to work. graph paper is so amazing for doodling. maybe this person shares the same love for graph paper as doodling paper and did this out of boredom in class one day?

This is funny. I took a look at that album cover, and it does look the same as this. I wonder if the 'artiste' was making a copy of it, or sadly, that its some OCD bi-polar person's endless meanderings.

Pepper is too busy trying to pick out other people's mistakes to correct his/her own mistakes. I think (and I may be overly generous here) that hotmom was trying to make a little joke, spelling serious in almost the same manner that Herve spelled nervous.

Let me be the first to say that this was "stolen" because it was stapled to the bench, not floating around freely. So someone has to get up in arms about the fact that no one else is allowed to enjoy this because Emily had to go and steal it.

There's usually someone who says that. It's not me.

But why was something like this stapled to a bench? Stapled!

I married a NZer, and though it's true many Americans are obsessed with NZ, I've found that no one, absolutely no one, is more obsessed with it than my mother-in-law. I originally thought maybe someone from the band drew this, and that it was stapled to the bench as some kind of weird (and ineffective) promo, since someone went through all the trouble to photocopy it and staple it there... but a quick look at wikipedia tells me these guys are from Rhode Island-- complete opposite coast. Maybe the guy who drew it was just a fanatic of the band.

I think they probably made more than one photocopy, and stapled it in more than one place. To what end, I don't know... but why would you go through all the trouble otherwise? To photocopy something once, and staple it to a bench? Weird.

I really like this find. It's highly intruiging.

Rex in memory of that time i went to see lightning bolt in chicago at this tiny cafe and was one of the 300 people who were turned away cuz the show cuz the capacity of the place was like 150 or something, so dissappointing. We went to see a noise show instead, where we stole half of Bloody Minded's guacamole cuz those guys suck, but prurient kicked enough ass to make the trip worthwile anyway. plus it was damn good guacamole.
i bet this is a show flyer designed and posted by a local band that opened for Lightning Bolt, who i'm sure have played N. Carolina and every state in the US regardless of which coast and probably most of Canada as well. i saw them in Berlin fer chrissakes.

i think the finder cropped the show info, dates and times and what-not.

I lived in Providence, RI for a few years, and I'm almost certain this is the artwork of Brian Chippendale, the drummer for the Providence band Lightning Bolt. Aside from being an incredible drummer, Chippendale is a cartoonist and one of the founders of the Fort Thunder art collective. The band tours fairly often, so it's not unlikely they've been to North Carolina.

It's awesome that he or someone else just stapled it randomly to a bench for someone to find. Seriously though, the whole Providence noise rock scene is worth checking out, especially Lighting Bolt.

Don't be too hard on SARA, Mona. (or imposter, as the case may be.) When I first glanced at the find blurb under the pic, I thought it said California, too.

The find reminds me of when I was in San Francisco for some Jazz Festival in Golden Gate Park. I found a little Star Wars Storm Trooper LegoMan in the sand. It's one of my most prized trinkets.

Dancing Queen, I agree! For instance, the first Legonaut in the second row down. What's he saying? "what's up!"? "shut up!"? ("STFU"?)

Interestingly, I had only seen the word spelled "chotchke". Dictionary dot com tells me that both are acceptable and correct. Learn something new every day.

Freon, thanks for telling me about a tchotchke. Makes sense. I wonder what it is about New Zealand tchotchkes that makes them unique in the world of knicknacks.
+ September 11, 2007 12:19 AM +
Me in New Zealand
As pointed out by Hirayuki, the thing that makes NZ tchotchkes unique is that they are all covered in sheep. Why sheep you may ask? Well, good old NZ supposedly has a lot of sheep. It is of constant amazement to me why tourists find sheep so fascinating as to stop in the middle of a road way out in the wop-wops and waste a whole film taking pictures of them, but thats what they do. Please don't ever do this when visiting. EVER.

And what is up with the gremlins?? Astronaut lego are so cute but the gremlins around the outside look like they're trying to kill them all. I think thats what happened to the pour soul in the top right with the blotched out face.

Me in New Zealand, thank you for a delightful new word to refer to the non-urban world: wop-wops! I've heard "out in the sticks", "out in the boonies", "out in Podunk", and a few other terms not to be shared in polite company (though that's not often not a term to describe this board!) But wop-wops is a new term that I adore! And I promise that if I ever make it to New Zealand, I won't shoot scads of pictures of sheep.

By the way, I always assumed the fascination with New Zealand sprang from the popularity of the Jurassic Park and Lord of the Rings movies. The landscape there is a beautiful treasure.
