A Retirement Home Is Not a Nightclub
FOUND by Paul Richey in Toronto, Ontario
I live in a retirement home that also has students living here too (I'm one of the students). One night some students were playing music in the student floor lounge and some guy who was staying in one of the bed and breakfast rooms came in and yelled at them. Then he left this note.

why are students living in retirement homes? no dorms at this school?

Poor old people. An interesting find that makes me question the definitions of "found." But I guess the found operators know best, yeah? It does seem quite weird that a retirement home also houses students..and a bed and breakfast room. Canadian Dorms sound strange, for sure!

Nice penmanship for sure!

This note makes me think that some sort of Arrested Development-esque scene went down the night before. I can picture obnoxious grown men dancing and holding boom boxes to the ears of retirees in wheelchairs who are moaning in distress. I think it was the "Torturing old people" line.

Fiesty old guys are my favorite. I keep thinking of 'pops' from King of the Hill when I read this note.

Mixing retirees and college student really wasn't a good idea from the get go...they should have thought that through better.

Definitely not a good mix. Maybe this was all part of an "Adopt-a-Grandparent" program that went horribly awry.

Just wondering if the author of the note is one of those old folks who keeps the TV cranked to high decibels (often tuned to The Price is Right) to the everlasting annoyance of his neighbors. Talk about inhumane.

I'm with "co confused", why are students in a retirement home? thats just mean to those poor old people. "V" I think what your elder needs is a hearing aid or some head phones and then you wouldn't have that problem.

LOL! i agree great handwriting.. this letter sounds like its aiming towards me..im always blasting my music up..honestly i dont do it to show off, i love music and without the "thump, thump, thumping" it wouldnt be..well, it wouldnt be music. i get guilt trips sometimes when my music is on very loud and im stopped at a red light next to someone thats old enough to be my parents and i would turn it down a little bit until the light turns back green..n e 1 else do that?

This note pisses me off. In reading between the lines of it all, the prick that wrote this note really had no reason to. First he didn't know how often this happened (he was just staying the night) and second he just passed judgment on a bunch of students. How loud was the music really? If the senior citizens minded, why didn't they tell somebody? Old people can talk too, ya know. And it was in the lounge of the student floor. I hate ageism too, especially if it's aimed at younger people.

I was near a retirement community in college and some of my classmates lived there. The older people could still move around and lead full lives and for the most part liked to see young people working their asses off to pass a class. One friend though had the habit of listening to Mozart and his neighbor started a hissy fit because he could hear it. It wasn't loud, it was just an old guy being mean.

I'm not saying "it's not too loud, you're just too old!", but what I'm saying is that people get too angry about the silliest things that aren't even their business...

Oh the irony.

Not to stereotype, but this does not look like the handwriting of an elderly man in a retirement home.

I think the elderly man who wrote this must be related to the "delightful" old woman I had for a neighbor when I was going to WMU. It's always fun to get a call from Mom saying that the police are looking for me, but on this occasion it was because my car was "blocking" (by about 10 inches)her driveway and she wanted them to tow it away. The cops were actually appologetic, and just had me move my car. They warned me to watch out for her because calling the police on students in the neighborhood was a favorite hobby of this particular senior citizen.

Mona in in my own little world
I thought this was hilarious. My husband told me the other day that he couldn't WAIT to get old so he could be the meanest bastard around and everyone would just have to put up with his behaviour because of his age. Frank from "Everybody Loves Raymond" is his goal in life. I told him that I would sock him in a nursing home so fast it would make his head spin!
On a sadder note, there was a boy here that was throwing rocks at an old guys house just to piss him off. The old man got tired of it and shot him one day. Can you say "over-reaction?"

Isn't that Keith Richard's hand writing?

I think I must too be getting old because last night at the movies, I shhhed two ladies sitting behind me. One called me a bitch....so,in my mind, I slammed her head into the chair in front of her and spit on her companion. Is this what you'd call mental overkill? I really want to know.

The phenomenon that occurs when someone becomes a badass when addressing others on a message board.

It is a common practice for the reticent, meek, and cowardly to make bold statements, on the internet, knowing there is no way to be held accountable.

Wow - I've NEVER heard of mixing college students with Senior Citizens.

That is like a double-nightmare....for both the college student AND the elderly.

The handwriting sure is nice though - not shakey, so I wonder if a young person really wrote it, instead of an elderly person.
I know, not ALL older people have shakey handwriting...just a thought.
T'would be intriguing if one the young dorm mates wrote it, rather than an older dude.

Note to my children in the faaaar future: Do NOT put Mom in a home w/college students.

Wow. So playing your music too loud is equivalent to kicking puppies? And it's torturous, nearly psychopathic, sickening, immature, and inhumane.

I love these kind of finds. The whole overly nosey neighbor thing is just funny to me. I have gotten notes on my door before about the smell of smoke, noise level, calling the cops, etc. I have come to except the fact that adjusting to other peoples habbits just comes with living close together. What's wrong with these old folks anyway, they don't know how to thrash I guess. Did I see that Jason from FOUND called SALT a troll yesterday in a subsequent post or I reading that wrong?

Well first there should never be young people and seniors living in the same building like that and second - the kids knew when they moved in that there were old people there, don't they have any respect at all? And what about other students who may have actually wanted to study or God forbid - get some rest? Not everyone who is young is hot for loud music and foolish parties. Some of us actually want to get somewhere in life. I agree with the old guy too - you want that crap go to a club!

The great thing about young people is that you can look at them acting as if the world were made for them and them along, and just smile quietly, knowing what's in store for them.

I send my sympathy out to the elderly, it's not so much that they are "ageist" getting older really changes people. Very few folks are able to stay "young at heart" when they are going through drastic physical and mental changes, in a shell, their bodies are winding down. Give the old folks a break.

I am confused as to why "Teresa" wouldn't consider this "found". I think it is a great find and thank Paul for sharing it!

I am guessing the retirement home also houses students because it a) has the room and b) needs the money. I am more surprised that it also functions as a B&B. As for the nut-face who penned this note (great penmanship) - who the hell is he to call old people defenseless and assume he knows how they feel? I am sure that they are still capable of speaking for themselves and if they took issue with the noise level on the student floor they would say so. Most of the seniors I know say exactly what they think - no matter how tactless or rude. They don't need some (I imagine) middle-aged ass-wipe to fight their battles for them.

PS. isn't the spam question relating the the first US president culturally biased?

Harsh. The note makes me laugh though, the writer just seems far too offended for the scenario...sure loud music sucks, especially if you're tired, but "inhumane"? "Sick callous behavior" in league with spitting on babies and kicking puppies? "psychopathic?"

Why is everyone assuming this was a cranky old guy? If he was staying in a B&B he was more likely a visitor, especially considering the way he considers old people to be helpless.

We love to talk about how selfish and self-absorbed 'young' people are, but this nutjob seems more clueless than any teenager I know, comparing loud music to kicking puppies.

I work in a senior building that also houses deaf tenants of any age. We had some very serious conflicts between the deaf college students and the seniors. I think the last straw was hoisting the burning trash can out the window during a party. Anyway things have calmed down, but we still function as a multigenerational building.

Ok Pitch, then I've been "too old" since I was a teenager because for me it's always been too loud. I put bar napkins in my ears at concerts just so I can actually hear the music. Turn it down!

And Sam, I had a similar experience with an old lady in my neighborhood. I parked my work van in front of her house, not even within two feet of her driveway, just in front. She called my work and said someone had stolen their van and parked it blocking her driveway. I got in trouble. Thanks a lot!

From what I've been reading, you folks consider old people "disposable", thus not worth of consideration. I sure the loud music is from a neighboring building. No matter who the neighbors are, there should be consideration for them. The letter is well articulated and worthy of serious consideration.
Apparently, the majority of those commenting here feel that consideration for their fellow person is not of importance. Thus, continuing the sense of "Me, Myself and I......ONLY". Selfishness is now apparently the norm. This is a sad state of affairs.
I'd say "Look at yourselves. At how pathetic you are." but that's all you do is look at yourselves.
You've created that world, someday it'll bite you in the ass.

Spitting on babies and kicking puppies??? WTF?? I know everyone keeps saying "whose idea was this??"- but I mean, maybe it is just a cheap appartment complex... those attract the young and old alike- each claiming the building as their own? The old people think its a retirment home/bed and breakfast- the young think its a night club obviously.... those things can get confusing when people cohabitate... my husband has this weird idea he lives in a hotel and can leave messes all over the place for the "maid" to clean up... hmmmm....

yeah, how very smart.
so you will be never too old cause now it's not too loud and then you'll just be deaf.

it's not like i don't enjoy loud music myself, it's just i pretty much don't get the point of stupidly damaging your ears not to mention other peoples nerves, esp when they're older AND reasonable - like the person from that note seems.

There's a hostel in Toronto that has floors dedicated to seniors, students, and tourists/guests. Odd combination, I know, but it's affordable for people who are visiting the city. I guess the senior citizen's area was an original part of the building and the owner's thought they could earn extra money by renting rooms to travelers...

Hey, I'm old, but I like it loud. I dislike rap, and I might go ask someone to cool it, it's late, switch to r&b, but leave a note like that? Oldtimer's syndrome, and a bad case at that. Find where he lives and walk across his lawn.

I predict that as baby boomers age, the wimpy college students will be asking the retirement homes to turn that loud music down. And they better ask nice.
