Messages in the Night
FOUND by Eric S. in Tampa, Florida
If you live near Tampa, you have received these. There's a religious nut who goes around town very late at night, randomly depositing these tightly folded messages on people's front lawns. If it's raining that night, they all arrive wrapped in tin foil. This guy also distributes CDs wrapped in saran wrap, which consist of religious/pop culture/delusional ramblings with bits of music by Evie (a Scandinavian christian pop singer from the 1970s) spliced in. I have copies of two CDs that were found about 30 miles and 5 years apart from each other if you would like to hear them. They are quite good.

I would LOVE to hear the cds.

Some of my favorite people have schizophrenia. If it wasn't so horrible, it'd be kinda fun.

I hear you. I don't know what's wrong with Bob Dylan either. Lately, I've been persecuted by Mozart. When someone asks me about him, I completely wipe them off the board and run away screaming (293).

I wrote all of the works attributed to "Stephen King" while I was institutionalized. They stole them from me. But I wrote them all. I also write the songs that make the whole world sing. I write the songs of love, and special things. I write the songs that make the young girls cry. I write the songs. I write the songs.

oddness in the kitchen floor
once upon a time i started to receive odd little packages thru the cat door to my kitchen in my second story duplex apt. This went on for some time, things like silk flowers or bottles of soda half drunk, i was mystified but not too upset.
one day the person delivered his ID minus the eyes which had been scratched off.
after that the jig was up, and i knew who he was.
sensing, i believe, that the magic was gone, no more packages arrived from then on though i never confronted him.
i kindda miss them.

Mr wizard in the html labortaory
What's really weird is that the same thing was happening with bold and italic type on the previous Find page.. but the same fix didn't fix it. Very odd.

So you see, Jimmy, the main things to remember is "quotation marks around the URL" on a hyperlink and </closing tags> on all the commands. Thank you, and have a pleasant good night. (I really think that once we all get the hang of it, it'll totally be worth the effort.)

Oh.. right. About the find.. isn't it usually the case that schizophrenics don't "know" that they're schizophrenic? (and therefore wouldn't open a note with the phrase "I'm schizophrenic..") Or is that some overgeneralized, erroneous myth?
+ February 09, 2008 02:44 AM +
Been There, Done That
It's a myth. I've corresponded with a few schizophrenics, and one wrote to me that he usually knew when others might think that what he was experiencing wasn't real, and that most of the time he could adapt his behavior accordingly; for instance, by not screaming at the voices to shut up while he was riding on the subway. One asked me if she thought they would let her carry a gun if she became a wilderness ranger. I said probably not. It's very, very tough being schizophrenic. Their suicide rate is very high. Sad.

I am almost jealous of this schizophrenic character. He's got what it takes to make good music and is not afraid to put himself out there. It's too bad he thinks that Bob Dylan is pursuing him.

I think one of my friends is schizophrenic. I have no idea how it's treated, and decided not to do anything about it, as I don't even know what I could do, plus he has a very great mistrust of institutions or treatment for mental illness and I think it would make him unhappy. But comments saying 'high suicide rate' scare me just a little. He's one of my favorite people.

I told him straight out I thought he was schizophrenic. His response was: 'I'm not schizophrenic!' in a deeply incredulous tone. I was all 'Oh, no, you just think there's a little man sitting on the carpet.'

its sad, the number of people with schizophrenia who are afraid of getting treatment. I can understand that, the side effects of the meds are horrible. THe older ones cause stiffness and restlessness, the newer ones cause weight gain and increase risk of diabetes.
If someone's not a danger to anyone, then maybe treatment isn't necessary, but it needs to be explored. I've seen lots of people function in society, with the right medication, and caring support systems.

I never cared for Bob Dylan either and I am a 60s fanatic.

This is an interesting find, but to know there are many of these types of notes laying all around Tampa, this puts it in a different category than other finds.

People with schizophrenia have the episodes and are aware of them but cannot control them. Most people I deal with (I work with disabled people) know that they have schizophrenia. It's a question of admitting it - because some people deny it. Not good.

I like this find and I hope Bob Dylan stops bothering people.

Whew! No problem, Jason. I'm the one who got us stuck in HTML land last night, and so (thankfully) about 15 of my posts were deleted. I made two huge mistakes: 1.) in the example, it looked like there were spaces before and after the text between the bracketed commands; and, 2.) I didn't notice the slash in the second set of brackets that closes the command. Once having unleashed it, it made everything I wrote (and everyone else in subsequent posts) appear in red, bold italic and hot-linked all text to a certain American Apparel product. Many thanks to the html wizard who got us back on track in the wee hours this morning, and to Jason for sweeping up a few hours later. I'm sorry for the mess.

I wonder if Bob Dylan ever checks in here at Foundmagazine.com?

I am definitely a fan of Bob Dylan's songs and music. Incredible the way he is with words. I think my favorite song of his is Isis.

"..I married Isis on the 5th day of May
cuz I could not hold onto her anymore
so I got on my horse and I rode straightaway
to an unknown valley
where I could not go wrong
oh Isis oh Isis you mystical child
what drives me to you is what drives me insane
I still can remember the way that you smiled
on the 5th day of May in a dress out in the rain.."

..come to think of it, there's a certain similarity in Dylan's rambling ballads to the ramblings on some of our found items..

this message is for Emily in the Midwest (and other brave folk like her): kudos to you for being open and honest - and obviously a pretty together person despite - or perhaps partly because of - your struggles with your mental
health; for having the guts to stand up and speak out for yourself and others like us. Most of the lovely posters here (those who aren't just hung up on html issues or dylan ;) can see the sad, sweet beauty of this Tampa man's compulsion, but few people know how this drives us to create and share in an attempt to soothe or heal ourselves, or even just share our experience and try to connect with the world around us in a beautiful, hopefully healthy way. I think Davy and his crew are all a little OCD or somethin', personally. :) Folks probably have little idea of how many of history's great creators were struggling with some of these conditions. look at dear, tragic Vincent VanGogh... Anyway (what were y'all sating about schizoid ramblings? ;) thank you is the point, for recognizing that society is beginning to have feelings for people like us, and most especially for "shar[ing] [your] thoughts as freely with such free thinking people as this person." Amen, sister!

A lot of people here mentioned that they want to hear the CD. To be honest, the CDs are sad, hilarious, and a bit disturbing, depending on how you feel like interpreting them. Here's a transcript of the first few seconds of one CD: "An eye doctor put drops in my eyes that blinded me. So I went on a 22-day fast and now I can read the bible again. This is a song by Evie (play song)." Yeah, that's just the first 10 seconds...

The only thing that keeps me from posting the CDs, is that he levels a lot of threats toward various people (to the point where you're kinda worried for them). That, and I don't know where to post an hour-long MP3 file so that people can listen to it.

For now, I submitted two other clippings to the web site. So they might bubble up in the future. Anyway, glad you guys liked it.

I don't understand Schizophrenia but I was wondering...could a tramatizing experience in your life cause you to be schizophrenic? I had a Vietnam veteran that used to walk up and down our streets cursing, spitting, and screaming at all hours of the night in our neighborhood. I thought I remembered mom telling me that he had a mental handicap because of the war and he only got that way if he didn't take his medicine. All this time I wondered why he never took his medicine but thanks to Mona Lisa in the Louvre, I think I understand now.

We have quite a bit of experience here in the law office with schizophrenic and bi-polar patients, both representing and on the opposite sides. Very sad, but interesting the way the mind works for these folks.

I think the best was the client who "played" chess with the radio, thinking it was giving him instructions on how to move. That person also used tin foil quite a bit. That is a strange consistency among the sufferers. Maybe someone who is a Dr. or psychologist can give us some insight.

I have to admit though, that no matter what Mom said in his defense, I was not very fond of him as a child. I think it was because fear got the best of me and it was hard to reason at that age why anyone would act that way and not take medicine to get better. As an adult, I understand it better and I definitely don't hold the same opinions as I did when I was younger.

I just have to admit that now though because I feel bad that I didn't give the guy a chance as a child.

I love my cat Snickers. She won't stop singing.

And I love posting. mainly because of the questions for spam protection. So fun. So so fun.

@ Emily- Thank-You.

I'd love to meet your kitty-cat, Snickers! What a 'sweet' name!

I own a dog, a Rottweiler, and her name is Layla. She's 4 years old, and she sings, too!!

Mind you, only when there is food involved!

Eric,

I was just debating going out to see the new Dylan schitzo-biopic "I'm Not There" when I ran across your post. Funny!

Anyway . . . There are several sites that will host files for free. The one that I like is www.mediafire.com. If the file is too big to post, then you may need to compress it (with a zip, rar, or stuffit program).

It would be great to hear those CDs.

Thanks for posting.

Is there any way possible to get copies of those cd's? Nothing says "AWESOME!" like recordings of peoples random thoughts.

When you say Tampa, do you mean Clearwater? I live in Clearwater and get these on the lawn from time to time. The guy must randomly picks people's houses because our next door neighboor gets them all the time, she brought over one to me one day to ask if we get them. they freak her out...

I think that's ace that that guy comes round with those bits of paper and that he even goes to the extent of wrapping them in tinfoil. We tried leaving notes through the letterbox down the road once but nothing happened. Pretty boring. I would like to hear the CD's too, I bet they're wicked!

a good reason to visit the in laws?
My Mom in Law lives in Tarpon. I wonder if she ever gets these. It would probably freak her out.

Does anyone know what's wrong with Bob Dylan? He is a woman in his new movie I hear.

I wonder what Bob did to persecute this person.

I mean All I Really Wanna Do Is Baby Be Friends With You.

And I like how he uses tinfoil when he knows A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall.

P.S. - I'm wearing a Dylan shirt right now and enjoying the irony.
