Prison
FOUND by Grace Lanz in Minneapolis, Minnesota
This picture (one of about twelve) was found in the basement of my apartment when we moved in.
L
The colors...someone is trying to put a cheery face on things.

I like it.

If I were sent to jail there, I'd almost be upset if I got stuck with one of the white colored cells.
But then again, if I had a colored one and I was sent there for a long time, I'd probably get sick of that color.
Hmm.
Also, what are so many pictures of a prison doing in that apartment in the first place? Maybe the original residents knew someone in that prison?

Geek NOT in my mom's basement
@ L: That was my first reaction. It sure is a lot cheerier than the photos of Alcatraz. And I bet they have better cable TV than I do.

The stacked picnic tables make me think they got rain today. To bad, they would have liked a nice picnic.

Feeling in coherent
I hear the train a comin'

It's rolling round the bend

And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when,

I'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' on

But that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Antone..

When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son,

Always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns.

But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die

When I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry..

LASH is over the rainbow...

HMMMMMMM...could it be the *gay* cell block? Sometimes they put happy people there for their own protection???

Not that there's anything wrong with that....

I love the contrast between the dismal sights on the left hand side of the photo and the bright gates on the right. Really, not bad as prisons go.

@The Girl In The Stars

Actually just the bars are painted. The cell walls are all the same color, off white. Wanna come help me paint?

Lonely in Pennsylvania
This prison is really old school, probably built in the early 1900's when the Pennsylvania system predominated american correctional theory. The Penn system was all about solitary confinement with as little interpersonal interaction as possible. Next came the auburn system, where people worked together but were alone at night.. in current jail design the auburn theory is augmented by placing prisoners in groups, where there will be anywhere from 10-50 jail cells surrounding a common area for those prisoners. That has been a common design feature since the 50's.

I'd want bright pink jail bars.. in color theory, pink is one of the most universally soothing or calming (even for men)! Although prior to the victorian era, pink was the "male" color, and blue was for "girls".. funny how things change..

I turned twenty one in prison
Doing life without parole
No one could steer me right
But Mama tried
Mama tried
Mama tried to raise me better
But her pleading I denied
That leaves only me to blame
'cause Mama tried

Each cell has a little awning.
+ November 12, 2008 08:51 AM +
Geek NOT in my mom's basement
@ Melanie: If it wasn't for the awning, I could spit on a prisoner or guard below me a lot easier. Bodily fluids are much easier to aim when you can let them fall straight down. Just saying.
+ November 12, 2008 09:27 AM +
funkychick in my basement
@ Melanie - that "awning" is a walkway for the prisoners.

I think I'd want to be on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th level to see out the windows and get lots of natural light.

Have you been half asleep
and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it.
It's something that I'm supposed to be.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.

8th grade teacher in agony for a break
Wow. My first thought was SECURITY BREACH!!! First, who allows pictures inside a prison? That could cause problems on both ends - prison breaks, professional hits... Then, I don't see picnic tables stacked neatly against the wall. I see multiple opportunities for assault with a deadly weapon and lots of blunt force trauma.

Lonely, you know a lot of stuff about prisons and colors!

I agree with you, that pink is a calming color. Especially peachy pink. It's cheerful too.

@Narnian:

nope, i thought the exact same thing. only a little more...disco, perhaps.

i also agree with The Girl in the Stars - why, exactly, is that in the basement of an apartment?

@Librarian - YES.

i would like to know what the guy who is sticking his head into one cell is thinking. perhaps they need more paint?

i don't know what 454 divided by 2 is naturally. does anyone...?

that is alcatraz.
i have no idea why the cells are painted like that, or when.

This isn't Alcatraz, can't tell you where it is, but I can tell you it's not Alcatraz or the WA ST Pen. That narrows it down to, oh, a gabillion possible prisons.

Searching for Cheery Rainbow Prison didn't provide any clues lol
