Rabbit
FOUND by Michael Hearst in Brooklyn, New York
I found this photograph on filthy floor of the F Train while riding between Jay Street and Bergen Street in Brooklyn. It was just after midnight and I was almost too tired to pick it up. But then, a couple stops later, I realized I was still staring at it. I knew what I had to do. I reached over and peel it away from the grime left behind by thousands of New York City shoes.
Jamie in a state of confusion
oh no.. is it trying to hang itself? those are some bad owners.. choose life hoppy! choose life!

even though its camera red-eye, it still looks like some sort of omen bunny!
also, look through the basket, is there a few more baby demon rabbits in there? is that what he is looking at?
still, wouldnt like to have this staring at me on the F train.

Christa, that was my fist thought, too! But, alas, he (she?) is the wrong color. I dub this SON OF BUNNICULA!

actually i don't know, that might be his real eye color. I know that albino bunnies usually have red eyes, maybe it's possible that all black ones could have red eyes too. if so that's pretty cool. anyone know?

Wasn't Bunnicula a white bunny?? But by the look in his eyes I bet he does suck the juice out of veggies!

Uh oh. Did someone take the Bunny's chair? Don't make the bunny angry. You won't like him when he's angry.

Michael, I understand the sacrifice you made, and I thank you. No one picks something off the subway train floor without serious reservations. You've done a brave thing so that we could enjoy Red Eye the Rabbit.

sort of in teresting,

I had a black bunny very similar to this one as a child. Her eyes were brown, but for some reason shine red in many of the pictures I have of her. I suspect that is what is going on here, too. This pic makes me miss her a ton!

Matt in my cubicle
When I was a kid we raised rabbits for food. When a new litter was a couple of months old my father would karate chop them behind the head breaking their neck, then skin them, cut them up and fry them like chicken.

I'm 30 years old now and haven't eaten rabbit in many, many years, but I have a feeling that the picture of this demon bunny is going to bring back the nightmares.

I pray for the silence of the bunnies.

Looks like he's about to get into a giant drainer. I don't think you can drain bunnies down the sink.

That can't be Bunnicula, he was white with a black cape marking on his back. Might certainly be a descendant, though.

Also, I can tell you that black rabbits do not generally have red eyes. Albino rabbits have red eyes because they are albino. Black rabbits are certainly not albino. (The red eyes are due to the lack of pigment in the iris, because there is no pigment, they pick up the pink/red color from the back of the eye. At least, that is my understanding.)

I used to have an enormous black rabbit; she had dark brown eyes.

Doesn't anyone know about the red reflex? the bunny does not have red eyes. It is the flash of the camera, bouncing off of the retina. You know? Red eye? sigh...

monalisa hanging...kari is right. rabbits don't have a red reflex...when you use a flash on them, the light reflect green, not red (the same is true for cats and i think dogs). the whole explanation about the pigmentation of the retina is spot on (i'm not sure why our retinal pigmentation is different than other mammals). if it hadn't been for this photo, i would have completely forgotten about bunnicula! i LOVED that book! i wonder if there are any copies listed on ebay... thank you, michael!

For those who miss it enough, Bunnicula is still in print. Its by James and Linda Howe and can be purchased in paperback at pretty much any bookstore.

Personally, I think its a better read if you get it from the Scholastic Book Fair order sheet.

Bunnygirl in in my cube
Three of my bunnies have brown eyes and they definitely get "red eye" when we take their pictures. In fact, it's ruined many otherwise adorable pictures. Our one bunny w/ pink eyes gets, well, pink eyes when we photograph her.
Oh, and it response to Lika, rabbits are not rodents. They're in the lagomorph family. There's a huge difference--that's what my rabbits tell me, anyway.

How are you afraid of bunnies!? They are among the best things on the planet. This photo is cuuute! I can't believe how many posts there are about the red eyes. That's the effect of the camera flash, you silly folks.
My bunnies are still cuter than this one, though.

I wuv this picture. It reminds me of my mini schnauzer. When I'm sitting on the sofa she gets her self up just like this bunny wabbit & searches for my hand/s so I can pet her, pick her up to pet her, or gain my full attention (that's when I sit on the ground with her and wub that belly of hers). I wuv my mini. I wuv this bunny wabbit too.

Another vote for cute! It looks like he is pining to take a rest in the chair - but then, he CAN hop, right? That part is confusing. Maybe his hopper is disabled.

I don't know Amy. Your bunnies are cute, but this one definitely has some personality goin' on. And c'mon...yours don't have the vicious red-eye like this one. This little black bunny is definitely up to something too. I mean, you can almost see the wheels spinning behind those eyes.

Looks like he's checking out whether he should jump in the chair, or he could be "chinning" it (claiming it by rubbing scent glands under the chin on it). Maybe his pic was on a NY subway trying to get to Roebling the Brooklyn Bunny, who he saw on the bunny cam: http://www.bklynbunny.com/home.html

Wow, my first thought was Buneee! Yep, that cute fangy guy was drawn from LIFE.

My next thought was to peek outside and make sure none of his buds have decided to brave the back porch and raid my garden boxes. This guy, yeah. He's up for some serious garden commando raids. My tomatos are doomed!
