Why to Go to U of A
FOUND by Kaytee Cobb in University of Arizona
A co-worker and I found this on the way out of our building one day. We can only assume that this girl is trying to convince her parents why she should go to UA. However, we cannot fathom how and why this school would help "deal with fear problems."
Sammy Davis Junior Jr in the car, leaving San Anselmo. Everyone is on vacation there.
I disagree, Kaytee Cobb. I think that this girl is trying to convince herself why she should go to this university.

Actually, Kaytee Cobb, I think a boy wrote this. He is considering going to school there because of the group of girls and the fact that they take care of girls. He likes his girls.

I wonder what Nike has to do with it?

What does it say under amazing training room? Nice? Nike? Nire?

A girl is writing this, she is an athlete and considering going to Arizona for an athletic program. The close group of girls would be her teammates and that would explain the nice training room, Nike and coaching staff. Klee, it probably says "fly all over," meaning traveling with the sports team. Perhaps she has a fear of being away from home and Arizona is someplace new and far from where she is comfortable being.

I notice the 'deals with fear problems' is next to 'Weather.' Maybe she is is Hurricane Katrina survivor and feels she would be safe from catastrophic storms in Arizona...

I can pretty much see what some of the writer's fears are from the good points on this list. Everything I need in one building, classes are nearby, and the U is near the airport--she doesn't have to drive a long way. She could be agoraphobic, or just have a fear of driving. She can work and pay for things over the summer, work at a camp, meals are cash--fear of poverty. Amazing training room, where she can do weights 5 days a week--body image problems, fear of getting "fat and ugly," possibly an eating disorder (although admittedly, that's pushing it).
Takes care of girls--she feels unsafe a lot of the time. Close group of girls--a lot of her friends will already be there--fear of being alone/abandonment issues.

Now, what loaching staff or 1ยบ a ching staff is, I have no idea. I Ching staff? Tai Chi staff(which she has never seen written down?) Or is it lessons on how to be a loach? If she is a generally fearful person, being able to lie on the bottom of an acquarium and lurk among the plant growth would have its attractions, I'm sure.

Maybe she thinks that the dry, hot AZ weather will make sure the flu is "all over" as in part of the past. Don't you believe it--viruses adapt to dry conditions, too.

Student advisors, close group of girls, coaching staff (stuff?) ... what more could you want from your university??

...and, oh by the way, the campus with its classes isn't too far away; might even be near enough that me and my posse might head on over there some time when we're not working out ... if the coaching staff flies us over there, that is.

And, look! I can get "$ insted of food card"! Goodie! That way I can lose my "a" instead of eating.

Thinking in stead of drinking
Wow. A great find. So much to try to figure out.

"deals with fear problems", "pay for stuff in summer", "work camp", and "fly all over" were added after all of the other items ... she ran out of room on the page. Note that they are lighter/smaller than the others.

My first thought was "flu all over" (paranoia), but looking at the 'y' in 'everything' and the 'u' in 'group', I'm pretty sure it's 'fly all over', which is pretty upbeat, and in keeping with everything except the fear issue ...and I think that one point (fear issue) is geared for her parents.

She's athletic, not fat. Excited, not paranoid. Perhaps being recruited by AU ('Nike' ... 'pay for stuff in summer'). I just don't get the 'workcamp' thing.

training camps maybe?
this girl sounds like my neighbor, who in the third grade, missed 2 weeks of school because we were learning about weather and she was so afraid of tornadoes that she wouldn't leave the basement.

It's fly. She can fly all over. I think that'd be one awesome reason to go to a college. So that's their secret! They have the one and only flying class..

At first I didn't notice the bullet between "weather" and "deals with fear problems." Also, I was thinking it was ASU. So it didn't make sense because Phoenix has very frightening weather! Certain times of year you better hope everything you need is in one building because you could roast to death walking to your car. And if the electricity ever goes out, everyone could fry. (I guess the weather in Tuscon is similar.)

It's gotta be a girl athlete trying to decide between the different schools who have made recruitment offers. Why any athlete would want to go to school where they have to train in such a hot climate is not something I can understand. Maybe she's a swimmer.

I'd recommend the food card. If you accept money you'll want to spend it on clothes and junk. I can pretty much guarantee you won't be spending it on nutrition.

ACTUALLY, this is a feasibility study done by the Coen brothers before they shot their 1987 film "Raising Arizona" (Nicholas Cage, Holly Hunter, and introducing "a close group of girls" as the quintuplets they kidnapped).

Excellent piece of Hollywood history. Thanks for sharing it.

I think Clover is right on. This is obviously a femail being recruited to play some sport at UA, probably basketball, but where Clover drops the ball is wondering about the hot climate when clearly the training facilites (new gym and amazing training room) are indoor.

Also, most major colleges equipment and jerseys are provided by Nike, Adidas etc. and this lady values Nike over competing brands.

I was on a bus from Tuscon to Phoenix, driving through a storm--one of the scariest experiences of my life. It went from daylight to darkness in a minute and there was lightening all around us. It sure didn't do anything good for my weather fears.

As a prospective college student myself, I think this girl went to an information session and took notes to remember the school later--all schools blend together when you go on enough tours. The "fear" part might refer to campus security. Every school I saw emphasized how safe it was, to quell fears about school shootings.

Love the website!

Oh sure. It all sounds appealing, all that great stuff under one roof, until you find out that once you go in to that 1 building, you can't get out! if you listen close you can hear the screams... "Let me out! Oh dear God, let....me....oooouuuut!!!!"

I'm very impressed with all of you guys' very-clean minds. My instant thought about the last entry was the oh-so-typical "F U" type of abbreviation (either f... you, or f... up) all over.

Perhaps the team flies all over... ? (thanks for straightening out my dirty mind!)

Looks like a scholarship-offer. I wonder about the fear part, though... that could cover a LOT of ground!

@Librarian, that's amazing! At first i thought: at least there were no murders or arsons from 2002-2007! Then I saw that there were 4 murders and 25 arsons! But there were no arrests for murders or arsons!
+ December 31, 2008 12:26 AM +
baby basil in the herb garden
@Clover, yes, that's a very valid point--no *arrests*. When I was in college there were 3 rapes that were attested to the security services and the college authorities hushed them up "in the interests of the greater good" (ie the school's standing with the Regents, funding possibilities, and sports teams rankings).

Fortunately one of the girls went to the city police anyway.

That was when we started having "Retake the Night" rallies. Do they still do that, or has the world grown wiser, so they aren't necessary? I can but hope.

Looks like "fly all over" to me.

Also it's more likely to be ASU and not U of A. From what I remember of sports news, when talking about AZ universities, "Arizona" usually refers to ASU.

Bear Down! I loved U of A a million years ago when I went there (ok 10).

I also used to work at the Marriott on campus where this note was probably written and I was completely sexually harassed and had to leave. If she does get a job while in school, she should work at the "new" gym. I worked there too and it was really fun.

Oh, but the student advisors suck.

U of A Grad in QC, AZ
I am still trying to figure out if this is a case for U of A or ASU...ASU is MUCH closer to the airport than U of A is. However, U of A is definitely sponsored by Nike (and I am assuming that's what number 6 on the list is).

I want to know how they "take care of girls" at a University? Maybe the Tempe police need to start dredging the bottom of Tempe Town Lake for bodies? eek!

I think she was probably a runner or played some sort of sport. That would be why she would care about taking care of the girls. And also running has a lot of fear and so do other sports like gymnastics.

is this college in the AZ town with a serial killer last year?

That can help explain taking care of the girls and dealing with fears.

She probably was just making notes after visiting the campus for the 1st time. I love other people's lists!
