We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
In Russia, it is Our Little Pony.
This is my favorite find of all time.
Rex! Can you comment on your own find, or is there some kind of conflict of interest clause?
REX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh rex.....
i love this. love it.
Well, that answers our question about what happened to Rex. Good to hear from you, tavarishch!
This is brilliant -- all the addenda are spot on, right down to the date (oh, and the smoking factory chimney which I've only just noticed). I see he hasn't done anying about 'nice neighbors' though! (Makes me think of Shostakovich's operetta 'Cheryomushki', which is all about a 'nice new' Soviet housing estate.)
Did the owner of the company not think twice before calling it Kapital?? He kinda got what he deserves.
What up Rex!! I like the " nearby plumbing ". Niice..
"Gulag access." Hahahaha!
Have missed your comments, Rex.
Can i just say.. how cool it is, that just the other day, people were wondering where the hell Rex was, and today there's his find??
Of course, some people might not think its a coincidence.
I love life, and the living of it.
Can the deposit be paid in Vodka?
Rex, this looks like it could be your handiwork.....hmmmmmm.
To answer some question about property.
Plumbing only 2 miles away, but only works when not winter.
Deposit accepted only in form of vodka... No other legal tender accepted for deposit.
Power also nearby.
Address now "81 Stalin Way"
And you were just mentioned on the site a couple days ago. Nice to see you got something posted. And a good one too. Fake? Turbo's questioning.
Love Fuel!
Nearby plumbing and gulag entrance. That's Rex's doing.
Yes of course, it must be fake... noone ever really "finds" these things anyhow. Not like cool people would do this for fun without the intention of sending it in to Found. That would be stupid.
Mona, are you swooning?
This is the best find ever. This is exactly how I feel about my landlord and the maintenance department. I can just imagine that the person who scribbled on the flyer was about two steps away from hiring a lawyer to get their sink fixed.
I was wondering where Rex had gone. I do hope he posts today :)
Great find, BTW.
God Bless Karl Marx.
nadine. it's REX. of Course mona's swooning.
"Das" und "Platz" sind auf den Deutsch, nicht russisch.
@Lach Doch Mal:
Ja. I was thinking the same thing, so I googled. "Das Kapital (IPA: [das kapiˈtaːl]) (Capital, in the English translation) is an extensive treatise on political economy written by Karl Marx and edited in part by Friedrich Engels in German. The book is a critical analysis of capitalism and its practical economic application and also, in part, a critique of other related theories. Its first volume was published in 1867."
And if those accomodations don't grab you, I've got a beach-front timeshare in Havana you might be interested in....
I'm too new around here to really know Rex, but I'm intrigued at the line of suspicion traced in our comments. Kira's claim might be the most bold and far-reaching. Are people worldwide really aware of FOUND and ready to manipulate or fabricate notes, texts, handbills, photos, etc. for the hope of "publication"?
If that is, in fact, true, what happens to FOUND? Does it need to go away? Does it need to acknowledge the "fraud"? Police it? Or is that all just part of the game? To what extent does it matter that these objects are what they claim to be -- created without any consciousness that they might be collected, circulated, and commented on?
I'm having an existential moment here. Does anyone want to share their insights? Does this kind of suspicion threaten the loss of FOUND? Or the loss of something fundamental to FOUND? If so, what replaces that loss?
@not so clever in contemplation,
Kira is a shit stirrer, a buzz kill, a black cloud. She's probably Pepper, too. Don't pay any attention to her. (Unless you need help on a math test.)
I knew this find would bring out Agent Ling Hi!
Not-so-Clever: google the finder and you'll meet Rex. Or go back through the archives here at Found for last summer and fall and you'll find Rex there as well. Also, seatch for the find called 'You Da Best' (9-11-07) and you'll find a very amusing post by Rex.
I can't say if it's a 'real' find or not. I don't think I even care. What's generally more entertaining to little ol' me are the comments that follow the find rather than the find itself.
Hi, Rex!
Rex, you must be so proud of your Found celebrity status. It is a good find, by the way. I currently feel the same way about my own landlord. Plugs fall out of the walls, people. That is NOT okay.
if this is swooning, then yes, dammit, i am. Rex is my fave.
Oh, that is hilarious. I like that the writer is so familiar with communist Russia. Referenses like "five year plan" and "collective" aren't generally known in passing. Very nice!
Real, not real...meh. It gave me a giggle which was sorely needed.
So what, if they're all "mades" instead of finds? So what, if the multifarious "Finds" I send in never ever get posted? Most of the finds (and quite a few of the foundhounds) make me think. And that's all I want from life.
MY COMPOUND'S BEING RAIDED. WHERE'S MY SHOTGUN?
@CuriousKat: thanks. I can see why that old post from Rex is so memorable.
@baby basil: That's great. "mades" v. "finds" I love it.
@the rest: thanks for taking time to respond to my questions.
@the find: this is evidence that we're either teaching Marx too MUCH or too LITTLE in the American academy. I can't tell which.
At first I didn't have anything to say, I think it's because I live in California and got really hung up on the $525 a month--that won't even get a you a shitty apartment around here, not even one run by pinko commie bastards.
Do they call apartments 'flats' in Wisconsin? This flier is suspicious. What does Rex mean by "Fuel"?
'Flats' are a specific type of apartment. A flat takes up the whole floor of the building. They are very common in older buildings that were converted into apartments.
It isn't a poster that was casually found laying around, and then defaced. If you look at the DAS on the flyer you will notice that it was probably done in MS Paint or something close to it. That is definatly writing using a mouse and a little round ball.
Just my 2 cents.
@Just curiously: hard to tell since this is just a small scan of the hard copy. But I think that the pixelation is an artifact of the scanning process, not the original document. Look at the A's in Kapital (and all the other diagonals and non-horizontal and non-vertical lines). You'll notice they are also pixelated. We're dealing with the limits of scanner resolution and -- probably much more importantly -- the limits of image compression.
Marker and pen in my book.
Is the shower system gas? Is there a moustache trimmer in the bathroom?
P.S. Sadie in Texas: In England a flat can refer to any sized flat, be it a shoebox-esque shithole or an entire floor-filling palace. I'd say my flat is more at the shoebox end of the scale
It really doesn't matter to me if the finds are real, made up or have been added to by the Finder to make them more interesting. This site has always been about celebrating the quirkiness; the strangeness of life and the creativity of those of us who live on this blue and green planet-like orb.
I agree with Curious Kat that the comments are often more interesting than the Find itself.Which just serves to emphasize the celebration of creativity and quirkiness even more.
@Mona I happen to be one of those people who don't believe in coincidences. To me a coincidence is the Universe's way of telling us to wake and and pay attention. A coincidence shows us that the Universe is both more complicated than we think and also more connected then we have been taught.
I agree with you smallbear. no such thing as coincidence.
Haven't seen a find I liked this much in a while. Simply amazing. Someone put way too much thought into this, and I love them for it.
It's the Red Scare,
all over again!
Hey, at least this
mass hysteria is clever.
Hey! Rex sent this in! I was just asking about him a day or two ago, remember? Quelle coincidence!
Cool find too!
This place doesn't sound so bad. I'll sign the lease then head out to pick up a new gray comforter and towels at Lenin's & Things.
Jan, LOL! Definitely gray, to match the wardrobe. I remember when they told us that all the Soviet clothes were gray. They had no choice of color or style at all. And the black & white films they showed at the time proved it. I still remember the fashion show newsreel where the women in frumpy gray calf-length skirts walked down the runway. Ironic that we called them Reds.
(Now I'm thinking those newsreels might have been fakes. Hmmm.. I wonder? Because why would they even bother having a fashion show?)
Jan ISO an apartment, FTW!! Lenins and Things! ROFLMAO
Sundaeg1rl, try saying 'shoeboxesque shithole' after too many gin and tonics... (as in 'Would you like to come back to my..?'). Could ruin your social life.
I think 'shoeboxesque' is going to be my favourite adjective from now on (at least when sober).
I used to live in a palatial flat and now live in a shoeboxesque house.
Hey hey hey...
I can no longer access find from my square job. I heard rumors that my find got up, so i am now at an internet cafe, and leave for a weeklong trip to mexico in less than an hour, so cannot really even post or read all the comments now.
I miss you guys, and i'm suprised at how many are still around! I've been doing well, last weekend i produced 5 short plays in 24 hours, and performed a short piece about me hanging upside down, spitting up blood and screaming death rattles into a cell phone at a metal show in an underground venue. My voice is still fucked up.
this found was given to my by my friend, he found it hanging in a cafe (called Fuel), obviously some third (or fourth?) party did the hilarious defacing.
I wish i had time to read some other finds and post some comments, but my laundry is surely waiting in the dryer at home so i can finish packing.
31 plus 11 is harder than the spam protection used to be... ah! it's the answer to life, the universe and everything!
see, who wouldnt love Rex?
gosh, we miss you, bud.
@MONA- You were most definitely, positively, correct when you said that REX is a great person!!!
Allow me the honours to swoon with you!!??
Apparently some of you (ahem, not-so-clever, ummm, whoever the other person is) tottally did not get what I said earlier. I was being sarcastic. Of course cool people do this stuff for fun... I have way before I found FOUND. Its not uncommon at all, and the idea that it is faked (especially by a finder with as high regard as rex) is absolutely proposterious... Actually think when you read, sometimes there is something behind the words that you might miss.
Kira -- 'proposterious' is a good word...
Is that like 'kallipygous'? (my favourite adjective... look it up) ;-)
Hey Rex, my hero, good to hear from you.
Jonathan,
Someone called me callipygian once. I replied coyly, "It's my best side." 8-p

Not sure how we got here from Rex's Kapital!
Karl Marx Platz... (Karl Marx "Place" or square)
im Berlin, Deutschland...
There's a Karl Marxer Hof in Vienna (Austria) too.
The Berlin one must be in East Berlin so would (formerly) count as Soviet, nicht wahr?
