I used to be a Mormon and I could completely see someone from my former church writing that. It's sad, really, at how it sounds EXACTLY like what you hear when you're sitting with the missionaries taking classes, and EXACTLY like what you hear in service, and EXACTLY what you hear in Relief Society... Total brainwashing.

How exactly is that brainwashing?

I grew up with members of the Mormon church - I never converted but I respected their beliefs.
As a child, it was easy for me to listen to them and let them speak.
As an adult, why is it so hard for others to do the same?
Is it brainwashing if you agree with them? Or is it brainwashing simply when you don't agree with them?
Mormons, like every other person, are just people. Let them have their ideals as they let you have yours. Just because they are sharing their ideals with you doesn't mean you have to believe it them yourselves.

To be bold - and draw a comparison - how is this different than anti-semitism?

Just let people live.

Anyways, I hope this letter helped some of the people in jail get through it all.

What strikes me as funny is 'the Word of God, the same as the Holy Scriptures of King James.' Hullooo! King James wasn't actually God, and didn't himself write those scriptures.

The King James version is an edition of the Bible. While it is known that he did not WRITE THE SCRIPTURES, he rewrote them (like if you were to take what I wrote here and add a ton more punctuation). I don't know his motivations but all in all it's no different than a New Testament version. Versions of the Bible change but the message is always the same.

Sure King James wasn't God. Neither was Mormon. :)

It's only brainwashing if you let it be brainwashing. I, for one, am a Mormon. And I've read that book for myself, and I believe it. I don't write like that, or speak like that either. We all take what we have and believe and try to make life better with it, whether we're black, white, green, believers in God, athiests, shinto... That's what life is about, in my opinion.

Interesting to notice some of the odd syntax that reveals that English is not this person's first language. "Ancients Prophets"--adjectives are never plural in English, but are in several European languages. "The Bible of King James" also is simply putting the description after the noun, instead of "King James Bible." I would take a stab at thinking this person probably was a native Spanish or French speaker, given the length of the sentences which to a native English speaker would require more periods and shorter thought-units.

i too am a mormon, i served a mission in russia and i was happy if anyone even asked me what i was doing in siberia. there are some mormons that are way to gung-ho about talking to people about our faith, and they scare me too, but we are just trying to make someones day brighter. i talk to people now about my faith not to try and baptize them, but just to meet and talk to people. i only wished people could see that it does not matter what religion you are, if you are just a good person life is easier.
P.S. some of the most friendly people in russia were not the christian, but the muslims.

It would probably surprise most people to know that here in South Carolina (at least in Columbia) we have a fairly large Mormon population. Through my former job I have met and befriended quite a few people from the local parish and I have to say that they are genuinely some of the nicest, smartest and most interesting people I know and several of whom I consider best friends. Being a child of the bible belt, I find their beliefs a little bit wacky and slightly radical, but it's not a big deal. I do however have a serious problem with people judging others based on their religous beliefs, or lack thereof.

Oh goodness, in cases like these I'm especially proud to say that I'm not in the least bit religious. As my little sister asked when she was 7 years old..."Mom, who's Jesus?"

I grew up Mormon, and this sounds very familiar.

I'm not Mormon anymore...and I'm grateful for that.

My best friend is Mormon. We have been freinds for 10 years and she is the best friend I have ever had. Her family is wonderful too and they are some of the kindest, most generous and intelligent people I have ever met. She doesn't try to convert me and I don't judge her beliefs. We simply except and love each other for the people that we are.

I'm proud of this person for expressing their beliefs! I think the world would be a better place if everyone - including some of you who posted - were more accepting and even curious about others' ways of life. Would there be any harm in reading the Mormon Bible? I think everyone would do well to learn more about his/her fellow men.

This is something we use to do in Sunday School. It's a "testimony" builder for you, and is giving another person the opportunity to learn about the Book of Mormon. Although I do my best to respect the religion, this is yet another reason why I am no longer "LDS", that and the "role" of women, the place for homosexuals, and the abuse of power by the men who are the only ones with authority.

my comment is the first posted and i am a convert to the LDS faith. i am grateful to the friends i had growing up who belong to this church because they were an example and a testimony to me later when i decided to join the church. if you feel it's brainwashing that is fine you are entitled to your opinion. if you feel that the role of women in insignificant that's fine too. again it's your opinion. i would however strongly reccommend that those who are so highly critical stop and think about what they are doing. i have never condemned anyone for their religious beliefs (unless it requires breaking the laws of the land). i don't understand what is so terrible about a belief in something bigger than yourself that makes you want to be a better person to your fellow man and live to a higher moral standard. i'm not foisting it on you. if you want to partake, FABULOUS! if not, well done you. it's your decision. i am so grateful to my family for being so openminded and loving me even though my joining the LDS was not their first choice of things for me to do. but they practice what they preach and love people regardless. a lot of people could take a page.

ok, so I;m mormon and I've done this exercise before in church. I promise you, we are not crazy, although many people think we are. Just because I'm mormon, I get a lot of people saying I'm ignorant and making fun of me. I don't understand why. It's not ike they make fun of other religons, just us. We're people too, and just because we believe something different, doesn't mean you have to discriminate.

AS I said before my best friend is Mormon, I've gone to church functions and even to Sunday services w/ her and her family. They have never tried to brain wash me. They have only ever given me support, love and kindness. I do have a problem w/ their views on homosexuality. My other BF is gay. I have one question? My friend has a trampoline, her parents have a trampoline and several other mormon families have them, what's up with that!? Do the elders and the bishops give you a trampoline when you join?

Strange that you mention the trampoline. The Mormon family across the street is the only one in the neighborhood that actually has one up and it came with them when they moved here! Most of the families I know that had them at one time have taken them down due to children and dogs flying off of them as well as insurance carriers refusing to cover them on the home policy. Can't imagine it being a Morman thing only, but odd anyway.

I wasn't trying to stereotype but what is the deal with Mormons and trampolines? Can someone explain that. My friend who is Mormon agrees there is a strange correlation. Can anyone comment? I hope all the LDS out there know I am being silly but also truthful and curious. Like I said before I think Mormon people are some of the kindest people out there and my Mormon BFF has saved my life more than once. Peace and love to everyone!

Look up any neighborhood in utah near Provo on google earth. Many backyards have trampolines (though my mormon family in Pleasant Grove never did) a mormon friend from Melbourne Australia who is moving to the provo area noticed and told us.

So maybe it's because Mormons have so many kids and need to find something to do with them. Maybe we can start some kind of urban myth about trampolines and Mormons!! Seriously, Like I said before, my Moromon friend is the best freind I have ever had. Her children call me their Aunt, I am not Mormon but have agreed to raise her children mormom in case anything happens to her and her husband (she can't will them to another Mormon family b/c that would be like 10 kids!!!!) Anyway, I am not "brainwashed" by LDS and she is not going to do that to me. Like I said we love and respect each other and that's what love and Christianity is all about.
Thanks Bob for not making me feel crazy. There truly is something about Moromns and trampolines!!!!
+ February 13, 2008 10:50 PM +
Emma
hahah there really is something about the trampolines! I've never noticed it before, but one of my friends have a tramploine and we used to go there every night to just lay there if we had nothing to do. I just want to say thanks to all those who are not being baised to my religon. I truly believe it's true and we aren't crazy. It's just another religon. our religon seems like one of the most persecuted, and I don't know why. We aren't bad people, we just have a different belief. Just today, I had people at school saying things about how my dad has more than one wife (which is NOT true!. That's against our beliefs now, and we don't have horns, or tails, or antlers or worship seaguls. We believe in Jesus Christ and the Book of Mormon, and this knowledge has helped me in many tough situations.

Hi other Emma!! I'm glad some one else who's Mormon noticed about trampolines! Like I said before I totally support your views and beliefs but I'm not going to convert. My very, very best freind is LDS and I've been to church and other activities and I'm not going to convert. I'm Presbyterian and she knows that and it's cool. I'm sad people have narrrow minds about religion. I know you don't have horns!!! I was there when my mormon freind's babies were born and I can honestly say they have no horns!!

Hey other Emma,
Where ever you are if you want me to come set those jerks straight who were picking on you I will. I know you are kind of a peaceful group and maybe that's why my BFF keeps me. Because I yell and bitch for her when needed. I don't take any racial/ethnic/religous slurs lightly. No matter what! That's why we live in America!! So we can have freedom w/o persecution! People need to get a clue and before they make fun of any religious/ethnic group they should realize if you want to get dirty there are all kinds of stereotypes attached to everyone. I mean EVERYONE who is here in America. Seriously Emma, I'll help you out. lol lol
