Somehow I don't think '1889' refers to the date. I'm pretty sure you'd get sent to jail for wearing that kind of gear back then, hell even now! Why didn't someone tell that guy its a crime to wear socks with sandals?

Look closely, you can see his toes...he isn't wearing socks.

Yeah, this picture is definately NOT from 1889. The guys jacket and the woman's dress are no more than 60 years old just by looks of the designs.

You notice how the women in these old photos rarely ever smile? The man looks like he's got a slight grin. She just looks like she's had a REALLY tiresome day...poor ol' gal.

it could be from 1889. just let the picture and the words tell a story. no need to go any further into it.

I'm an American cultural historian. This picture is not from 1889--for a million reasons I could list. But I think it makes it an even BETTER story that 1889 is written on the back. Why?

Maybe, someone in 1889 found this. Like a message from the future. That now is our past.

Maybe the book dated back to 1889...therefore someone decided to write 1889 on the picture?

perhaps they are really from 1989 and somebody just misprinted the date (I do that some times).
Or perhaps there are 1,889 reasons why he wants to sit on the porch with his wife instead of anywhere else in the world.

Maybe the address of the place is 1889? Or possibly it's 1.8.89? I'm intrigued.

I think one or both of the people in the picture were born in 1889.There is no way that the picture was from that year.More like 1940's,50's or even 60's.That would make them the right age too.

What's wrong wtih socks and sandals?....Berkies and socks are a fashion statement.

of course it could be from 1889.

it's not like any of you know about brazilian history anyways.

Yeah, Ms. American History Genius...the pic was found in BRASIL! How's your knowledge in their history? I'm guessing it's not that great...I don't know if 1889 is the real date or not, but I do know that all of you keep comparing it to American fashion history. Why not ask someone that would actually know?
+ March 30, 2007 06:22 PM +

Brazil isn't so isolated that the fashions would have been that different from the rest of the Western world in 1889, especially if these are the kind of people who have cameras and machine-printed fabrics (that's obviously not a hand-woven rustic brocade the woman is wearing.) I personally would guess that the submitter may have misread a date like 1939 or 1969, or else that 1889 is a catalogue number or something else that is irrelevant to the date.

I don't think this is from 1889, but perhaps this was a picture from their wedding anniversary, and that was the year they were married....That's just my guess...

actually Brasil is how Brazil is spelled in Portuguese and I think all the other Latin languages. Watch the World Cup next time round and you will see

Despite the spelling bit I do agree that this picture was more then likely not taken in 1889. I am not sure about fashion but since Brazil had just formed a new republic I suspect it would have still mirrored Portuguese fashion, just a thought.

I'm from "Brasil"...and this is how we spell it...but since we are writing in English, we can write "Brazil".
I don't think this picture is from 1889 neither.
The house style is probably from the 60's because of the curve-y wall.
And the picture might been taken in 1989 and the founder misspelled or something.
Another thing: even if there was a house like this in 1889, the people would "look" richer...this couple looks like simple people.

Now in portuguese:

Muito boa a foto! Acho que não é de 1889, por causa da arquitetura da casa. Com certeza não havia casas assim nessa época, e se tivesse, seria para pessoas mais ricas...eles tem cara de gente simples.

You're all assuming this is a husband and wife. But look closely. They look much more like brother and sister. Possibly even twins- the facial similarities are very strong.

Use your brain people-1889? Brazil or anywhere this picture wouldn't just be stuck in a book if it is from 1889. Photography was still relatively new and no one would have been gone to the trouble of taking a picture in such casual clothes. Those sandals look like plastic to me. As for being twins? I don't think they look anything alike except that they both have faces.

Brasil is not Isolated. In any case isolated from what? This picture cannot be from 1889. I would assume it is 1959 the most. Well.

Karyn, I agree with you. I thought that they were related, too. But, he looks younger, maybe mother/son?

Ella's comment about people not smiling in old pictures- in older photographic processes, a neutral expression was encouraged because of the long exposure times needed. If the expression changed even slightly, a blurred photo would result.

I think it looks like a Brazilian mother and son, photo taken in 1989. Their outfits are totally like those that people their age would wear in the late 80's. And I wore sandals like that this summer. I love the architecture. I bet they are/were wealthy.

Dudes, this picture was taken in the late 30s or early 40s. The clothes and hair tell it all. I'll back that up with a several years of costume history.

Great pic.

This could've been taken in the 50s or 60s or 70s or even 80s. My mom's camera in the 80s took pictures like these, and I can think of my gramma wearing a dress like that one (that sort of looks dated) still in the 80s...
