I found this photo dated June 1963 on a street in San Francisco last year. It has an odd note on the back that reads "taken too late at night". But too late for what?

We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
Perhaps the photographer wished to have the picture taken at a brighter time of day.
It's odd that they'd need to write that on the back though. What a strange photo!
Do not taunt Palm Man.
Is what he's standing on supposed to be a road? And what's with his shirt pattern??

maybe the photographer had an artist's eye and thought that the palms looked spectacular in a certain light.
i mean... the palms are the focus of the picture and the do look pretty dark and drab in this shot.
This man is clearly a Romulan. Too late at night probably refers to invasion plans. (How do those silly Romulans plan to rule the universe if they can't manage to take a NoDoze for the sake of intergalactic conquest?)
the man' shirt looks like a pineapple, and goes quite nicely with the palms.
the cloud in the backgroud is spectacular.
What came to my mind is that the man in the photo died or was "killed" in the middle of the night and that this picture was possibly the remains from a memorial site

deanna in maryland wins. "Taken too late..." just refers to how the picture doesn't capture what the photographer wanted to capture, which is why they discarded the picture.
To me, it looks like the tree got cut down.
They might have planned it ahead of time, but they were obviously too late.
I'd look pretty defeated too, if I had a gigantic porcupine strapped to my back.
Taken too late? It was too late to change out of his Romulan uniform before being beamed aboard a passing galaxy class criser and taken to another dimension for scientific study.
Like "This was photograph was taken wayy too late at night" I think that's what the author meant.
BUT WOW THIS WAS BEFORE MY MOM WAS EVEN BORN!
