That Box
FOUND by Davy Rothbart
in Chicago, Illinois
This note was flapping down the beach by the North Avenue pier. I was with Nicole and Claire. It was a clear, windy day- Thursday May 11, 2000. This note is written on the back of a blue piece of stationary from a Secretarial-Bookkeeping Service in Kansas City. Of all the cryptic, inexplicable phrased I have discovered in found notes, I can't think of one more spooky and baffling than "I had a premonition on that box." What the hell is "that box???" There's something very creepy about the handwriting, the use of the word "sweetheart," and especially "dark premonition which has bore itself out." Reading this note a few times, I've begun to feel like the sole witness to an extraordinarily grisly murder.

I first read this find severl months ago and have not been able to get it out of my head. I tried to bookmark it and only recently realized I could go back and find it again. This is surely the creepiest thing I have read in a long time...and it just stays with you.
I kind of get the feeling that this note was written when the author's eyes were closed as if they were writing from their subconscious or something. Doesn't seem so farfetched considering they're talking about "premonitions" and such.
Most definitely THE craziest handwriting I've ever seen. This is certainly the work of some psychotic rapist, serial killer, kidnapper, stalker of some sort.
I think it says:
"FoR some Reason I awoke in happiNess SweeTheaRT, I had pRemoNiTioN oN That box- dark pRemoNition which has boRe itselF out. That (premonition)(explains)why we weRe (is it dead something?)"
What makes it so creepy is not only the content but the way R, T, and N are capitalized, but not always.
I think the last word is "deadlock," though s/he probably meant "deadlocked."
I really don't like this, I would have been terrified if I'd found it. The "dark premonition which has bore itself out" bit is horrible. I'd love to know who wrote this!!
Oh man! This is, by far, my favorite FOUND-note of all time. The first time I read this thing I experienced insane fits of mad giggling at the sheer insanity and obvious derangement of the note and its author. "I had a premonition on That Box! DARK premonition which has bore itself out!!"
Yeah - this note is crazy! This note and "Page Me Later" were actually the two notes we put on flyers as examples of FOUND notes back in 2000 when we were trying to get peope to submit finds for the first issue. 7 years later - just as scary!
I agree completely, it's like something out of a horror flick.
Speaking of which, Davy, I don't know if you've ever played the game "Silent Hill 2" for the PS2 or not, but there's this one sequence in it where you're in this abandoned hospital and stumble upon this mysterious container that you have to unlock. The first time I happened upon said sequence, this note and its contents immediately sprang to my mind. Can you guess why? http://www.gamerspress.com/index.php?title=Image:Si
It doesn't much help that a journal, written by some doctor at the same hospital, refers to said locked container as "That Box", either... 8-/
I wish I hadn't read this. It gives me the heebie-jeebies!
This note, "I'm watcheg you", and "Davita is dead and I didn't do it" are the creepiest finds on the site. They should have a book or magazine of creepy finds- that would be interetsing.
I live in Salem, Massachusetts, and here in Salem there are a ton of kids who have quite seriously convinced themselves that they are pagan witches - with actual powers. They walk around in flowy black clothing trying their damnedest to add a creepiness to everything they say and do. It's ridiculous and obnoxious and I kind of want to walk up to them, slap them in the face, and run away laughing.
Anyway, I bet a kid like that wrote this wanna-be-creepy note.
Might "deadlocked" mean it was a "premonition on that [jury] box"? Perhaps they'll finally reach a verdict.
Well, at least the author "awoke in happiness"...(?) It seems that the premonition explained why they had been deadlocked.. now they can move on ...
Nope. Sorry. No matter HOW I try to percieve it, it's still just. plain. creepy. (maybe that box is the TV, and he's been smokin too much weed and watching too many X Files re runs.)
Sounds like dark poetry to me. Using metaphors, perhaps explaining their experience on drugs or depression?
Surely this was the original plot outline for "Mulholland Drive."
I read this through, and you know what could be a possible explination? Automatic writing.
It's where people write in their sleep or under hypnotic state or some people say when they're possessed [I don't really believe that one]. It's just a suggestion but if it was actually in their sleep, it's a lot more likely that they left out words that would make sense if put in. Plus, if they were having a nightmare, it makes even more sense.
This is a very strange note. I tend to agree with RedDarling about it being written in a hypnotic/sleep state. I didn't think it was creepy though. Just odd. Makes me very curious as to what the actual context was. Maybe some day it's author will find this and explain.
I remember seeing this on here a few years ago and thinking, "how very odd" and still... I can not hear the word 'premonition' without this note coming to mind. I came back to this website to see if I could find it and seeing it again... still gives me the creeps. It's distrurbing.
This note doesnt seem all that creepy to me actually it reminds me of some stuff that i wrote when i was breaking p witha boyfriend and trying to be insightful like hes saying i wok up happy with you today but i dont knw why i knew something was going on ( the box could just refernce like the raeson he knew the relationsip wasnt right) and his premontions of feeling about the situation ended up being true but hes in a deadlock because he still wants to be with this girl... just a thought
The writer has paused between each letter to decide how to write the next. No two characters link which is very unusual.
this is some deep sh-t... i like this find!! :-)
This was found on my birthday.
Every time I read it, it gives me the chills.
this is insane. it's like poetry.
I think you guys are right that it was written with eyes closed or maybe even in a dream state.
I find it interesting that the a's always look like a 2.
I could be wrong, but I don't think it's saying "that box." Rather, the hyphen makes it "that box-dark premonition." As in, the premonition is so dark, it's as if it's in a box. Sorry if that ruins the fun. :-)
Yeah, agree with KS. I think the first "premonition" has an accidental extra "on" at the end, not a separate word "on," so it's "I had premonition that box-dark premonition."
