OUCH! September 03, 2007 |
We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
you should hang this in your own home, and claim it was sent to you.
that, or sell it on e-bay.
HOW COOL! I didn't know the President sent birthday cards to people. I need to google and get myself on that list! How super important I'd feel receiving a White House envelope each year.
i think you automatically get one when you turn 100.
Yeah...when you're all hoary and gray, the PM of Canada does that here in Canada, as well.
My Grandfather received one when he turned 95, from Pierre Trudeau...
For some reason, I don't think receiving one from P.T. would fetch as much $ on E-Bay as the President's would!!!
i think very little with dub's signature would get much at auction. who would want it? not i.
although for the 100-year-olds, it's probably pretty cool.
When I was a kid, during the reign of the first President Bush, I wrote him a letter for some reason. It must have been around Christmas time because I got a card like this back in the mail (with Holiday wishes) along with a little magazine thing about the White House. I found these in a box that was inside another box while I was moving last year.
I never thought about eBay...
My grandpa got one of these from the first Bush when he turned 85. I was 17 at the time and appalled.
Yeah, if you are over a certain age, you can request one. Same with an anniversary card.
Actually, all you have to do to get stuff like this is be a registered republican. I know one personally, and he saves all the rubbish he gets in the mail, just so he can make fun of it. Also, so he can respond to their phone surveys and tell them, "I've been a registered Republican all my life and I'm disgusted with where they've taken the country. I'm voting Democrat this time." He even has an autographed glossy 8x10 photo of George and Laura.
Someday Bush paraphernalia will probably be meaningful to cult collectors. Or enshrined in museums dedicated to the Mighty Leaders of the Corptacracy, depending on which way the next election goes.
I wouldn't be too quick to assume that 100-year-olds are Bush supporters. Living a long time can actually make a person smarter!
Why is the magnify option available on this one?
@Clover: Why not?
oh, clover, i love that you know one registered republican personally! makes 'em sound so exotic!
It's not a real signature...they used to be stamped on, now the computer just prints the whole thing on the card.
I once wrote a letter to Gerald Ford's daughter (whose name escapes me right now) and got a letter back. Typed, and the signature wasn't real. I suppose some secretary took care of it.
If you send a wedding invitation to the President (at the White House address), you will get a congratulations card similar to this one in the mail. I know.... I did it and got one!
I know in the past that you could request from the White House a card for a wedding, birth, major anniversary and major birthdays. You're not going to get a card for your 27th birthday, I think it was 80 or higher or something like that.
I'm just impressed that George, at least once, managed joined up writing
Yes, once you turn 100 you get one of these in the mail. And no, most of the signitures are not real, but printed on there. And no, not all registered republicans get these. But if you are a VIP, such as my grandfather... and you are invited to some expensive important political event in D.C. (which he was). You do get real cards. He got one right after the start of Jr's first term. Only his wasn't stamped or printed... it really was signed by Laura. It said: "love, George, Laura, and the Girls." And some of the ink was kinda smudged to show authenticity. It was incredibly awesome in my 8th grader eyes. Now, I could care less and my grandfather's political power don't ammuse me any more.
AAAH! My eyes!!!! It burns us, Precious!!!
You mean 'Bushes.' ...At least the presidential greetings staff use proper grammer and punctuation.
Did you mean: /grammar/ ?
I hate him.
@Holly in Toronto. I'd much rather have P.E.T's autograph than George's! Trudeau's birthday card I would keep. The Bush's birthday card I would tuck into an obscure library book before returning it to the library...
You can invite the Prez (Dem or Rep) to your backyard kegger and the minions in the basement mailroom will kick out some sort of official White House response. I invited one of the former Presidents to my kid's baptism and received a nifty little reply. Your tax dollars at work.
I can think of a whole lot worse ways to spend my tax dollars. NPR and PBS for example.
We've gotten Christmas cards from the White House before.
yeah, just me: those organizations aren't faith-based, are they? i understand.
Here's the official web page on which to make your request for a birthday greeting form the White House:
https://app1.whitehouse.gov/
greetings/birthday
[put it all on one line, of course].
the official rules on the official site say: "Please remember that birthday cards will be sent to individuals who are celebrating their 80th (or greater) birthday on or before January 20, 2009. Requests should be made 6 weeks before the birthday."
They will also send greetings for a baby's birth, a wedding anniversary, and a wedding. (same URL as above, but REPLACE "birthday" with "home" ... you can figure it out). Greetings only go to US citizens, sorry.
My mother-in-law had one of these sent to us when our son was born, it is tucked safely away in his baby book. Regardless of if you like W or not, it is kind of cool for my son to have. Like a little piece of history. Or else he will think its lame when he is older and make fun of me for saving it. Just like I did to my mother for saving my baby teeth, i thought that was super creepy!
I never got a card from the Bush's and I voted for him in 2000.
Jeez..you really know who your friends are.
Hmm.....you can get a birthday card if you are turning 80, but not if you are turning 50 or 60 or 21?
How about 18? You can sign up for the military at 18, you would think the President of the United States would send you a card on your 18th birthday.
On another note: Did anyone see Saturday Night Live last night, when Tina Fey did a hilarious job as Sarah Palin?
fooch, she was made to play the part. practically couldn't tell them apart.
I laughed my ass off at Tina Fey! ("I can see Russia from my house.")
Lars, I agree: she was made for that part.
(p.s. my daughter had told me earlier that day what a MILF was, so I got it last night when Tina Fey said it).
ooops, my post was unrelated to the find.
Umm....a birthday card from the Bush's?
Never mind
@ PAYING MY RENT- You're absolutely right!! My Grandmother still has the Birthday Card from P.T.
After all these years...
I wouldn't want *Dubbeeahs* siggy or card, neither. I don't think it'd fetch $ online, anyway. At least, not enough to retire on!
Great call!
You get this letter if you are 100 years old.
seems to me if you are 100 years old your future would be filled with depends and gratitude for waking up another day. instead of love, etc.
so Willard Scott and smuckers can wish me a happy birthday on the freakin' today show.
I wonder, if McCain gets elected, if they'll just use the same form letter, Bush's siggy and all? Considering it will all be the same...
I got one of these when my son was born too. I don't even remember what I did with it...
@ Steve in Virginia, Yes they are all the same. The image on the front of the card does change however. I've seen a few diffrent ones.
When I was younger, I wrote a letter to Dan Quayle. He (or an assistant) sent back a letter which wasn't a total form letter, surprisingly. It actually had answers to specific questions I had written him. Of course, he probably wasn't very busy.
My aunt actually keeps all those signed letters/pictures that the Bushes send her and has them framed. *shudder.
@Whiskey--you didn't get it. I was saying that if Bush had any cards left over, McCain should use them up instead of throwing them out, b/c McCain and Bush are the same person...
@ STEVE- I couldn't agree with you MORE!
You can actually get these when your children are born too. I have two of them, one for each of my kids. I figure they will make great starters for a fire someday.....
i got one when i was younger, too. i think my mom just wrote and asked for one. she kept mine for me.
I don't know if this is true but I've heard that if you turn 100 you get a birthday card from the president.
Anyway, I'd wipe my butt with that. If George Bush wished me happy birthday I'd pissed off for a whole year.
I got one like this from Dubya when I sent him an invitation to my graduation. I also sent one to Obama, Hillary, and Santa. Santa and the Prez were the only ones to write back.
