I Declare
FOUND by Julia V. in Seattle, Washington
Inspired by FOUND's recent visit to Seattle, I went to a nearby middle school to do my own hunt. I found many random notes but this one was my favorite…

Well doesn't seem like school has done much in your intellectual growth anyhow, lil buddy. Keep the future alive.

I like the idea of declaring independence from something based on the idea that "i will no longer like it". Does this mean I can declare independence from rutabagas?

I'm declaring independence from brussels sprouts! They can go their way, and I'll go mine, no hard feelings. Either that, or I toss them into traffic one by one!

This kid declaring his independence from school could also be equated with declaring his independence from any steady future paycheck.

Good luck with that. :/

No skating on school property?? That's it! I am building my own school, with blackjack and hookers! Arrr... Forget about the school and the blackjack...

@ BENDER- I agree with you, and I have the perfect sign for the School/Bar/Pub:

**LIQUOR** in the front, and **POKER** in the rear!!!

Most amazing sign for ANY kind of Bar!!!!! Or illegal underground Club!!

As for this FIND, it's kinda' cute...in a dumb sorta' way.
"I declare my independence TO school?"

It should read, "I declare my independence FROM school."

Ahhhh...the memories...takes me back to 8th grade history class when we were told to do something similar, tho I believe it was copying the Bill of Rights. We too were to present a "list of grievances" and then the "rights" we declared to meet those grievances. Some of the kids played safe and used popular 70's topics like the environment, the ozone layer, energy etc. I tried to declare my independence FROM school (and my parents surreally strict regime)and you would not believe the fuss it caused, first at home, then at school. All my life I had been a "good" (ie quiet, well-behaved) student who followed the rules and never questioned authority. You would have thought I was advocating the use of Molotov cocktails at Assembly!

However, mine was correctly spelled and followed the norms of English grammar. Biting sarcasm has much sharper teeth if it's couched in formal language.

unfortunately, buddy, you probably won't be able to declare your independence to that menial job you get after this. it, too, will have to much rules, you will probably find it easy, there will definitely be a mr. (or ms.) yourboss, and you won't be able to skate there either. good luck, moron.

I'm glad to see this kid doesn't dislike all the teachers, just Mr (blank).

My experience has been that when a student refers to school as "too easy" it's either because (A) they're very bright & do not find it challenging, or because (B) they're cretinous little morons that only sit at their desks all day, picking their noses and waiting for recess.

Most of this second group only gets annoyed when Mr (blank) comes along, trying to motivate them. Shortly thereafter, they declare their alleged independence.

Far more Bs than As, I'm afraid

@ BABY BASIL-So, did you finish High School and or more?
I left school after Grade 11, which I incredibily regret now. Although, people say, "It's never too late to go back.." The longer you stay away from something you never really enjoyed, the harder it is to go back. (Don't get me wrong, I love to learn, I'll never stop asking questions) It was the authouity, and institutional thing then.
I'm 38, been married for 21 years and we have a soon to-be 20 year old son.
As I've aged, and grown wiser, the yearning to go back and achieve and or continue on after my High School Diploma, is definitely there. (The urge!)

I feel as though I'm stagnating, like a swamp without the smell!
I guess we'll see what the future holds for me...

holly, go back, go back! now's the time!!
or at least get an equivalence diploma... you will feel so energized and validated and all that you bring to the experience (wisdom, logic, etc.) will benefit you greatly.
or just continue to learn the way you have for the past 21 years - that's worked pretty well, too, right?
either way, regret breeds regret - don't get caught in that!

i declare my independence from school, except that i like the whole idea of a paycheck, teaching art can be fun, and there is this whole summer-vacation gig we got goin'. so, declare my independence from *teaching* and being responsible and stopping the sk8ters, and will become a student again, where i can choose at will to be responsible or not with no fear of being fired or forced to do cafeteria duty..... damn it. i'm going back to school and fighting for my place in the ivory tower.

@holly GO GO GO! tis fun. brain-candy for adults.

School is overrated; just look at all the people who put in the effort, and all they have to show for it is thousands in debt and a crap job they could've gotten without all that hassle!

mona lisa in grammar class
my offspring will tell you that my hugest pet peeve is the improper usage "too much" or "too many". It took me a while to figure out the criteria for each, finally determining that you should use 'too many' for when you could theoretically count the items in question on an individual basis (i.e. too many straws, too many bubbles) and 'too much' when you couldn't. (i.e. too much water in the tub, too much sand in my bathing suit)

anyway.

@baby basil, it's good to be a rebel! It struck me, though, when you wrote: "Some of the kids played safe and used popular 70's topics like the environment, the ozone layer, energy etc." -- that 1)those topics aren't so "safe" anymore, and 2) why did those topics stop being popular after the 70's? If their popularity had continued, maybe our world wouldn't be so messed up.

Clover in love with learning
@Holly.. you love to learn! Go back! Go back! *echoes lars* I think you will find college to be much different from high school.
@wrye.. ditto to everything you said. Teaching can be fun. Teaching IS fun, because there is always something to learn from the students, too.
@Ms.. I think too many people go to school just to get a job, and they miss the joy of learning. Can't blame them though. This economy stinks and it's scary when you can't make a living, and the cost of college and the fact that college loans will haunt you forever is dooming many to servitude and poverty. Very depressing.

So.. does education exist to serve the business world? If so, that's very very sad.

I have seen many students who know how to earn super-high grades but don't learn much. I have seen students earning D's who learn a lot. I had one student -- a skater! -- who never brought books, never did a thing in class, but apparently he was listening. He got the 2nd highest grade on the really hard final exam (80%+ and he could not possibly have cheated.) When students ask me, "How can I get an A?" I say "Learn French." What a concept.

What do you guys think.. should grades reflect learning or effort? Shouldn't effort reflect learning?

Holly, since you love to learn, you've got what it takes to be successful in school! No doubt about it. I'd say skip the high school equivalency certificate if you can do that in Canada. Go straight to college! In Oregon you can jump into community college without a HS diploma if you can pass the skills placement tests in writing and math. (BTW I always imagined you as older and college-educated. Not that it matters, I just thought you might want to know.)

Unfortunately college isn't free. But it is SO WORTH IT! I went back at the age of 25 after taking a few years off.. and I remember well the epiphany when I realized that education was enriching my life. Suddenly I was seeing the whole world with new eyes. It sounds like a cliché. But it's true.

WOW!! You guys are so inspiring!! The synergy I'm receiving from ya'lls' aura(<-sp?) is in an abundance of awe!

@ LARS, WRYE, and finally...CLOVER!!! Even though we've never "officially" met, I feel like we can collogue in the FOUND lounge, or ask any question to anyone and not feel like an idiot. I really do appreciate the support and advice.
I'm no fool, I know I'm street-wise, and even wiser from motherhood! You're absolutely correct, Lars, the past 21 years of being married and a Mother have taught me things I'd never (most probable) learn or experience anywhere else or at ANY job!
I totally admire you for saying that because alot of people don't realize how true it is. (So much to learn from marriage, motherhood, and growing)
Also, Wrye, I agree with you that no matter how old/young we are, learning is the ONLY form of 'candy' for the brain!! I like to pretend that it's *SMARTIES*! (They're my FAVE candy-coated, milk-chocolate, buttons!!!)
Clover-sweetie! I heart you! I really heart the song by JOAN JETT and the BLACKHEARTS: "Crimson and Clover...over and over..."still gives me goosebumps to this day!
To answer your questions, YES! I do, unequivically love to learn, as do many of us on this board. Also, University and College are 2 places I've always wanted to attend, especially after watching my g/f's all finish High School, go away to Europe (or the like)for a year, and then return home to take off to Uni or College! I'll admit, I was a wee bit resentful of the fact that I didn't go. We here in Toronto, Ontario, can also receive grants, loans, and scholarships, as well. I should have applied (and myself)because I would of been eligable<-(sp?) for any one of those. I can also go and get my GED and then staright into a College, of my choice for any kind of course. It could of been a 3 or 4 year course. It's called a "mature student" here in Canada.

If it wasn't for you guys, I wouldn't have a soul of mirth right now. :o)

THANKS!

I can sure sympathize with the kid. If you replace "school" with "corporate nonsense", I'm right there with him.

-- I no longer wish to hear corporate monkeys chatter about "proactively envisioneering impactful turnkey meta-deliverables" (and I mean no offense to actual monkeys here).

-- my own "Mr. Blank" is a corporate no-op and a leafblower. He fills his days with meetings and harvests paperwork from his direct reports. My job is to somehow make him look productive.

-- Rules? Yep, lots of rules about TPS reports and such.

-- Easy? Yes, if you can manage to stay in your cube and not flip out.

-- No sk8boarding? Not at my place either, but you can drink lots of coffee.

That kid will like corporate life less than he likes school.

Holly, yes...I skipped a grade and a half in HS, due to the terminal, unchallenged boredom mentioned by Farmer. And you would have thought it was a capital crime...no fewer than 4 teachers ganged up on me to talk me out of it, giving me that "highschool are the best years of your life" crapola. Oh yeah? They obviously didn't attend our school! Then I went on to college, studied the wrong degree at the wrong school, and finished at age 19.

Do go back to school, even if it's just a class here and there. You may find it harder to write a paper than you would have at 18, but you'll enjoy it more and get more out of it. If I could do it again, the codependent overachiever "accelerated degree" would not be the way I'd do it. Besides, where I live now, 25 yrs down the road, my degree is worse than useless. I had to make up my own job...I don't get paid much, but I enjoy it. Which is what it's all about.

I agree with Clover...we've known about alternative technologies, solar heating etc, the ozone layer, and many other issues for the past 30 plus years. But no one does anything. Plus ça change, plus c'est la meme chose. Like King Hezekiah, it seems the idea is "as long as we make the money in our lifetime, screw the future...we won't be here to see it."

And how.

Holly, I'm really glad you heart "Crimson and Clover" but it is NOT originally by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts! It came out about 15 yrs before they were even thought of. Google it, I can't remember right now who cut the original, but it came out in the 60s. Actually it may have been the Doors...I'm probably wrong about that, but NOT about Joan.

No disrespect but I remember JJ when she was in "The Runaways"...chcchchchchcCherry Bomb!

Accessing random information stored away in my tiny little brain...
without googling, I'm gonna say Tommy James and the Shondelles...

I'm also gonna say that those Canadian Smarties are icky- gotta go with the surefire hangover cure, tart little powdery Smarties!!

Ha! WOO! I googled before posting and I was right- Tommy James and the Shondelles. <I>"Crimson and Clover" was completely written and recorded by the duo of Tommy James and Peter Lucia Jr., the Shondells drummer. </i> from wiki. (and someday that code will work. I Just know it!)

you can look it up on YouTube and find videos of the song by both groups.
