We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
it seems to find me at the most appropriate time also.
that's so sad!! it makes me want to cry
Its me.
Another one of my favorite "founds"...the essence of excellent graphic design. The casual glance down at the fallen heart on the part of the grey figure; the "now what?" hands-on-hips attitude on the part of the white figure. Never have so few, simple shapes and lines said so much. This picture illustrates exactly why some of us hesitate to "throw our hearts out there."
It's awesome. The graphic sort of dulls down the pain of rejection into a simple formula that is much easier to understand.
I love this, its great. Is it a linolium print?
Too realistic. Depressing.
PS: I wonder if the non-white figure having no arms somehow represents their inability to catch[receive] love.
I love it
I'm glad Nathan pointed out that the receiving figure has no arms.
*Tears*
Nathan you are one intelligent individual, i did not even see that. That could also be another possibility, and i think a lighter one at that because the other possibility is too harsh but i guess life is like that, you know.
Is it me, or does the figure on the right look as if he/she WANTS to catch or receive the other ones love or heart, but just doesn't know how?
Dave, I think you might be right..this photo is so interesting and subjective
Could be the white figure is throwing the grey figure's heart back - the heart is grey also. Like maybe, when the love is gone, now what?
I like how hopeful Dave's comment on this is. I'm glad I stumbled on this, it's good timing for me.
Thank you Travis for giving me this site & this art work ..it's great..funny how life follows art
PONG! (the dating edition)
I am very intriqued with this and all of the comments! No arms. Grey heart being thrown at grey figure. What a great thing to stumble upon on this chilly April Saturday, while I nurse (and attempt to cure) my hangover.
So true isn't it? You spill your heart out to a boy and he's just like "What?..."
i agree/liked jenny in misery's comment about how the heart is grey like the armless guy. its like he/she is being thrown its heart back, but it dosnt fit anymore.
And I know how this feels. Hearts don't stick well enough to the people you need them to stick to.
after reading all these comments, i looked at the picture again and it made me cry.
i don't have any arms
I need this on a tee shirt.
hell yes holly. if you make them, i will buy one.
I didn't notice all that at first, either, but they are really great thoughts. I'd love a t-shirt too, but if this came from a text book to start with, might it be copyrighted somehow?
Real...
That is so sad it is so true though.
KATIE, i remember that from something, maybe i saw it on campus stamped someplace, . .. or mayeb you showed it to me. I love it soooo
i put this on my myspace.
This is so confusing but i think the gray figure gave the white figure its heart and the white figure is throwing it write back at her not accepting it so the gray figure just looks sad
oh my god i love this! i can totally relate to it. thankyou for sending it in.
This is an Illustration by Christoph Niemann. He's a brilliant Illustrator, from Germany who now works in NY. He's a big part of why I am an unsuccessful Illustrator myself.
Maybe he just wasn't ready to 'catch' all that love that she was throwing at him? Or maybe he just didn't want to?
Unrequited love sucks.
INDY! COVER YOUR HEART!!! Mola Ram! Prepare to meet Kali!
too perfect!!
its a picture that depicts my feelings perfectly.
thank you Kate D.
you have set me up with my true love.
:D
Note that the heart in only turning grey as it passes the dividing line. Clearly the white dude is giving his/her heart away. It now belongs to grey dude, despite his/her having let it drop. Whether or not the drop is intentional is the question I suppose.
omg gin!! you are soo right, i have never noticed that before, and i have looked at this pic a lot. i cant believe it
maybe it means something along the lines of "heart of stone"
Wow. All these comments are so true. It's crazy the meaning that can be found in a simple graphic. One of my favorites.
Maybe instead of just throwing his/her heart at his/her intended, s/he should just walk over and GIVE the Friend a HUG.
Hugs are good.
I wonder who's going to pick it up?
And the comments for this find are the way the comment section should be every day. Don't ya think? 8-)
Aww I feel like we're all in an art interpretation class. I really really love this find.
Their heads became square on November 6, 2007. And the heart finally broke.
I totally agree with LillaBean!! You guys really helped me look at this picture another way.

I had a relationship like this once...nothing sadder or more soul-destroying than to offer your heart with joy...only to find it rejected with indifference. Or that the intended recipient didn't even notice.
looking at this picture makes me wish he would have just rejected my heart instead of shattering it into the million pieces he did.
I offered my heart repeatedly to the love of my life for almost five years, but because of his upbringing, he just didn't have the ability to receive it. This illustration brings back a lot of memories. I miss him.
Thank you.
If Christoph Niemann did this, could you someone find proof? I think it's agreed upon that it's great art, so if it's known who did it, s/he should get credit.
I love this find. If I saw this in a shop, I would buy it.
Well of course the recipient couldn't catch the "offered" heart. Said recipient's hands are tied. Too bad!
powerful.
Regarding the question if Christoph Niemann did this illustration, I visited his web site and sent him an email with a link to this find asking if he did it. I received this reply...
"I did indeed, for the Times Magazine a LOOOONG time ago.
thank you so much fro sending over the post!"
"Here, take it"
"I don't want...what the hell is it?"
Gawd...the illustrator must've read my heart. It seems that there are too many of us that can relate to this pic. There's something wrong with THAT.
isn't it amazing how something so simple can hit so many so profoundly? i love this find

someone up there mentioned that their heads have turned square and the heart finally broke.. Television.
