Unite!
FOUND by Andrea Marion
I found this sign posted along my road recently. A bike ride up the road revealed 7 more of these signs, each as incoherent as this one. One simply read "Grapes and Coconuts." Each of the signs were laminated, indicating that this was a well-organized group which meant business. I became worried that whoever was posting these cryptic signs was planning a revolution, probably involving guns, fruit, and angry mobs wearing faux preppy islander clothes. This mystery remains unsolved.

this reminds me of a game we would play at summer camp... it was a chant sort of thing

"banana republic unite! go banana, go go banana..."

Those two that you mentioned are the names of summer camp songs...I don't know if that actually has any correlation but its a possibility.

Dawn in JAPAN
I learned "The Banana Song" from some American counselors that came to Japan to work with some kids from around the prefecture. I have since taught it to a slew of elementary school kids. They love it! So, the Banana Republic is spreading.

b a n a n a is how we spell revolution in Da Burgh
I think this has something to do with the south and central american countries known as the banana republics. These nations grew bananas as their staples crops, due largely to US corporate influence. So yes, its some sort of call for a revolution against American consumerism/imperialism.

Also learned this at a summer camp around 1994. This is how I remember it...

Bananas of the universe, unite!

Go banana, go go banana

Squish banana, squish squish banana

Peel banana, peel peel banana

Those may not be in the right order and I really don't remember the moves. Used to do it all the time though.

This sounds like a song my daughter's softball team sings in the dugout.

not just another mouth in the lipstick vogue
Um, Banana Republic is not a place to unite. It is a place of conspicuous consumption, economic stratification, gender division, and fashion homogenization.

That being said, this poster is charming.
