Surf or Die Dude
FOUND by Erin & Eric in San Luis Obispo, CA
We found this in a box of motorcycle magazines from the late 1970's at a swap meet. Included in the box was a Peachi folder with this note, old homework, birthday cards, and absence notes from his dad.

Is he a nazi and an ass-kicker, or is he kicking nazi ass?

Anyway, I like how you could tell this was from the 70s before reading the blurb. I wonder if he's still surfing.

I'd peg this as more early 80's than late 70's... I don't think a high school kid would know much about the Dickies and Boomtown Rats before then. Also the whole New Wave thing.

The Dickies were fun. I got to see them live in Fenders Ballroom. Nothing like a band who does songs about a talking penis.

This is the only dude that liked Pink Floyd AND Devo. Pretty impressive work on the Pink Floyd reproduction. I may adopt "Shred Dog" as my new nickname.

Tim's long hair, once golden as the California sun has now faded to gray. After dropping out of Morro Bay High School, he got a job at a local surf shop, waxing boards. He still works there to this day, shuffling around in his vintage '80s Vans, so worn out they barely stay on his feet.

He still dreams of moving out of his parents basement into his own place, where he can crank up Pink Floyd. If only he'd won the big surfing contest back in '81, he's sure his life might have turned out differently...

"Ask everybody if they want me to drop 'em a line." ...So, Tim's dealing now, too?

"I haven't cut my hair since fucken, before I moved." ...Sort of an anti-Samson vow or something?

I like his taste in music.

I wonder if Speed-dog Tim's still alive.

Hey Bra -

Nobody likes long hair 'since fuckin before' or since fuckin after ... so trim your bush. No one wants to see it flowing out of your surfer dude swim trunks.

PS - Tear down the wall you've become comfortably numb.

@cotton - you beat me to it. i was imagining a whole uncle rico scenario as well.

this reminds me of letters i wrote in high school. they didn't really convey much information but were sure to be covered in heavy metal rock band names and many doodled nicknames we carried....ah, high school

Muse on the Loose
"Longest Hair" was the only award Tim had ever won, and he was always looking to show it off, even in letters to his old friends. He was trying too hard to be a long-haired heavy-metal surfer-dude, though, so his old friends usually just laughed at his letters.

Yup Yup in DC now, LA then
Hooray for 70's LA radio! KROQ played punk stuff you'd never hear anywhere else, esp. if you stayed up late enough to hear Rodney on the Roq (NOTE TO RAVA: he started in 1976!):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_Bingenheim

And KMET had great bumper stickers that all of us tried to get for our notebooks... poor Tim probably missed So. Cal like crazy.

Whatever.
I knew dudes like this one while I went to high school. Reminds me of Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Blah blah blah.
Hope he has a life now and didn't kill too many brain cells.

I knew the Boomtown Rats in high school in the 70s. But I still don't know who the Dickies are. ;) And the Wall was huge huge huge.

Shred Dog...
I knew Ray Dog in Pismo & White Dog in SLO.... Wonder if he's friends w/ 'em
KMET was big in LA until they went off-the-air in '87)
KROQ started getting big the early 80's
B-52's came on the scene w/ the yellow album in about 81/82
The Wall was, what? 80-81?
I would guesstimate this is circa 80-82.
Shred Dog's probably in his mid 40's now.
Imagine how long his hair is now!
