See You in Future
FOUND by Sarah Reintgen in Marietta, Ohio
I found this letter (assumedly written by an international student) tucked in an anthology of Holocaust literature at my college library.
Billy in boring Southern Ohio
you get used to it, assumed international student. fun clip art usually helps liven things up, though.

Jan in a pile of soggy confetti
The festive clipart is in such dismal contrast to the message conveyed in the note.

It would be funny, though, if the student was watching say, Goodfellas, to practice deciphering American English.

Movies for to rent turned in must on time, or will always be also to have fine. Music also helps listening for to keep boredom away on weekend. Is party you are having? Party hats dance in picture of clip, only assume party-time. In future, will drunken time be? Hope this so.
See you sometime.

If you've read "Everything is Illuminated" this kind of writing might look/sound familiar.

oh "ab", so wrong, and yet so right.

Carol, I don't know that much about deaf people, but my guess is lack of hearing has no bearing on the ability to read and write the English language.

Even funnier is the "practice your listening". Very futile for someone who can't listen.

But I said I don't know that much about deaf people except I'll probably be one in about 15 years.

A deaf student? Really?!? You're serious that you think that person might write that way because they are deaf? Really?!?
Good lord.

Am I the only one who is disturbed by the slightly off center placement of the festive clip art?
+ May 08, 2007 11:18 AM +
Wak in g up at noon; still groggy.
I spent the whole note thinking that Marietta was someone, not somewhere. Someone very, very boring. Wonder if there is anyone named Marietta IN Marietta. She must be a real hoot!

Ed in Defense of the deaf student theory
I used to work in a call center that relayed telephone conversations for the deaf and hard of hearing (they'd type, we'd read to the hearing caller/the caller would talk, we'd type to the deaf caller), and some of them did write a lot like this. American Sign Language is not the same as English -- it uses a completely different grammar, and prepositions, articles, etc., aren't used. In a lot of ways, ASL is like Chinese. Some deaf people write English very fluidly; others' writing is strongly influenced by ASL.

Not saying I know it was written by a deaf person, but it's not impossible.

Turbo and Jenny, Carol is right when she says that a deaf student could have written this. Sign language is not a direct translation of English, and in fact, most studies show that users of ASL write English on about the third grade level.

However, as an ESL teacher, this does appear to be the work of a non-native English speaker. The most obvious give away is the use of the infinitive form of "to watch" rather than the correct conjugation. I assign my students listening exercises like watching films (because good input is the only way to increase output...)

Got new body in k today !
The writing sounds just like my S. Korean friend speaks and writes . Just today he sent me an email which says in part : "Because of the final result of custody trial which is not that satisfying me , I am pretty unhappy, but.. . Anyhow , life is still ongoing .I will drop by you again soon . Be happy . "

This reminds me of being in Japan or at the manicure shop. They can really destroy the English language. Check out www.engrish.com! They have a translation page that works kind of like AB's message!
You can send an Engrish message to you lover and really confuse them!

I saw a lot of people talking about this person being deaf.

If they're deaf, why were they talking about practicing their listening?
