Fig
FOUND by Tyler Kalberg in Tacoma, WA
I spotted this find more than a year ago on the sidewalk outside my house and it's been sitting in my living room ever since. The thing that struck me is that this is far from your ordinary missing pet flier. First, there's no photo...then again, it makes perfect sense, all black cats pretty much look the same. And the care at which the owner took to detail the cat's uniqueness was genius. The tail with the distinctive curve. The extra toes. His yellow eyes and torn ear. I never did see Fig but I can only hope that someone did and he made his way home.

graphically pleasing, but it lacks the despair of 50 hand-lettered-on-computer-paper Lost Pet signs.

That reminds me of a flyer I saw in Eugene, OR for a missing cat. It had the usual info and a photo of a little black cat with "not actual size" written below it. I love that.

This is suitable for framing. Really nice. Hope Fig came back home.

You can tell some student in a graphic design class made this. Also, I like the extra-toed paws. They kinda make it look like the cat's wearing mittens.

Cats with extra toes, be it 1 extra or 3, are said to have "double paws." Apparently the phenomenon is very common in areas of Canada and the NE US.

That's all I've got today.

Awww, poor thumbcat. I hope he found his way home. Missing pets is not fun at all.

This is a great poster, though. I agree, suitable for framing.

s not uncommon. Polydactylism, as most vets know, occurs in felines at the rate of about 1:

My black cat is named Ava. No extra toes, torn ear or distinctive curve to her tail. But she does have yellow eyes and the sense to know a good thing when she's got it. She runs and hides when the door opens- no risk of Lost Cat Syndrome.

Yup. That's definitely a black cat you got in that picture.

Was the last place you saw it a darkened room on a moonless midnight?

Why not just leave two holes for the yellow eye?

My friend has a cat with seven toes on all paws. We call the cat "Feets".

@Dollface: I think that is the other foot.

I think the only thing cooler than a black cat is one with extra toes. Hope Fig returned home.

I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said "all cats are gray at night..." Guess that's true of black cats too!

Ernest Hemingway was given the gift a cat with extra toes from a sea captain. There are still polydactyl cats at the Hemingway home and museum on Key West that descend from that first cat. I always call cats with extra toes Hemingways. My neighbor had one once who used it's paws like hands, to point it was somewhat creepy.

Maybe this is an album cover for the garage band 'Lost Black Cat'. Their latest album is called "FIG". Although "Yellow Eyes" could be a cool song, who would want to listen to songs called "Extra Toe on Both Front Paws" or "Tail Has a Distinctive Curve"? Nevermind.

My cat is a gray tabby with extra toes on her front paws that she can actually use to pick stuff up, AA batteries and such. She's a cool cat. Her name is Nala.

Hailey the budding graphic designer tried entering Fig in a contest for "cat with the most toes," but he wasn't quite polydactylous enough to win the contest. He was so disappointed, he ran away on 5th Avenue.

Clover in Oregon, not in Eugene anymore
Two people saw the same lost cat ad in Eugene, Oregon. That's weird. That flyer description sounds familiar. When I lost my cat in Eugene, Oregon, I posted full color photos and knocked on all the neighbors' doors asking about him. I got to meet my neighbors and my cat came home. I hope Fig's story had a happy ending like that.

So, someone is missing their cat and put up fliers in hopes of finding said cat and you took the flier home as soon as you saw it because the design was so good. Hmmm. You know what they say about black cats crossing your path. You'll get yours.

Note to self. Never design an attractive fliers.

just hangin, chillin. little bit of illin... in vancouver
reminds me of a lost cat flyer i saw a couple of years ago. i was touring with a friends band in australia and stepping out of the van we noticed a note on a pole "lost cat, smokey grey, MISSING ONE EYE, call ****" thought this was funny so filmed it and went about our business.
arrived later at a friends house where we were staying and all of us nearly lost our shit when said cat came strolling through the front door! our friend had lost it a week earlier and found it that day. it was priceless
